Psychological and Psychiatric Aspects of Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors.

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are mainly diagnosed by physical symptoms such as paralysis, visual field defect, seizure, and loss of consciousness. The psychological and psychiatric background of CNS tumors, whether in preoperative or postoperative period, has long been a neglected topic; however, lately, many authors and researchers have paid more attention to these manifestations. Neurocognition is a subset of parameters, including attention, memory, mood, emotions, language production, personality, executive function, problem-solving, calculation, and spatial cognition, making up the

Factors contributing to clinician training and development in the clinical area of laryngectomy and tracheoesophageal voice.

BACKGROUND: It has long been recognized that tracheoesophageal speech (TES) rehabilitation after laryngectomy is a specialized area of practice for speech and language therapist (SLTs) due to the complex nature of patient presentation and the invasive components of the SLT's role in this area. Therefore, postgraduate experience and training is required to work competently and safely in this clinical area. However, it is generally acknowledged that the steps and processes followed by individual clinicians to achieve this training and clinical skill development are inconsistent and vary widely a

The theory of planned behavior partly explains why adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain consider using medical cannabis for pain management.

Chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain has multiple causes and a high prevalence. Frequently, pharmacological options do not provide optimal pain relief, and treatment with opioids may lead to serious adverse effects. Although pharmacological effects of cannabis in pain management have been recognized, knowledge about a person’s motivations regarding this therapeutic strategy is limited. Such knowledge is important, given possible serious adverse effects of cannabis, and an increasing trend for self-medication. Our study aimed at exploring, understanding and quantifying pain patients’ motivations,

A proposed EGFR inhibitor dermatologic adverse event-specific grading scale from the MASCC skin toxicity study group.

BACKGROUND: Accurate grading of dermatologic adverse events (AE) due to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors (EGFRIs) is necessary for drug toxicity determinations, interagent comparisons, and supportive care trials. The most widely used severity grading scale, the National Cancer Institute's Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0 (NCI-CTCAE v4.0), was not designed specifically for this class of agents and may result in underreporting and poor grading of distinctive adverse events. We believe a class-specific grading scale is needed to help standardize assessm

A qualitative study on people with opioid use disorders' perspectives on smoking and smoking cessation interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking-related diseases are major contributors to disability and shorter life expectancy among opioid-dependent patients. Smoking prevalence is considerably higher for opioid-dependent persons than among the general population, and only a minority quit smoking in treatment settings. Studies show that pharmacological smoking cessation interventions have modest success rates. This study aimed to investigate patients' receiving opioid agonist therapy perspectives on factors affecting behavior and decisions related to smoking cessation, and their experiences with smoking cessation.

Behavioral health as a palliative care priority in long-term services and supports: A cross-sectional study of staff.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral health needs are highly prevalent among individuals receiving long-term services and supports (LTSS), yet palliative care (PC) models in these settings often underemphasize psychiatric symptom management. This study explores interdisciplinary staff perspectives on behavioral health as a core domain of PC across nursing home and Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) sites. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a multi-site survey assessing PC needs across 13 LTSS sites within a large health system in New York State. We examined 5 survey items relat

Three-Month Outcomes of Traumatic Brain Injury in the General Population: A Sunnybrook Traumatic Brain Injury Cohort Study.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common, disabling, and a growing public health concern. There are limited large-scale studies providing insight into factors associated with recovery in the general TBI population. Our aim was to identify factors associated with concussion/TBI symptom severity and return-to-work. We performed a prospective cohort study of concussion/TBI (predominantly mild to moderate) patients with data collected over a 20-year period (1998-2018). This is the first study presenting data from the Sunnybrook TBI (SUNTBI) cohort. Primary outcome at approximately 3-month postinjury

Systemic treatment of immune checkpoint inhibitor-induced psoriasis: Inference-based guidance.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly used to treat various cancers. Their use may result in immune-related adverse events, including psoriasis. When managing psoriasis, induced or exacerbated by an ICI, there are concerns regarding immunosuppression from systemic agents for the treatment of psoriasis (saPs) and the potential impact on ICI efficacy. No direct, high-level evidence exists to address these concerns. OBJECTIVE: To address clinically relevant questions regarding the management of ICI-mediated psoriasis (ICI-Ps) with saPs. METHODS: We convened a multidis

The implementation and side effect management of immune checkpoint inhibitors in gynecologic oncology: a JAGO/NOGGO survey.

BACKGROUND: The integration of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) into routine gynecologic cancer treatment requires a thorough understanding of how to manage immune-related adverse events (irAEs) to ensure patient safety. However, reports on real-world clinical experience in the management of ICIs in gynecologic oncology are very limited. The aim of this survey was to provide a real-world overview of the experiences and the current state of irAE management of ICIs in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. METHODS: We designed a questionnaire consisting of 34 items focused on physicans' clinical

Using Social Media as a Source of Real-World Data for Pharmaceutical Drug Development and Regulatory Decision Making.

INTRODUCTION: While pharmaceutical companies aim to leverage real-world data (RWD) to bridge the gap between clinical drug development and real-world patient outcomes, extant research has mainly focused on the use of social media in a post-approval safety-surveillance setting. Recent regulatory and technological developments indicate that social media may serve as a rich source to expand the evidence base to pre-approval and drug development activities. However, use cases related to drug development have been largely omitted, thereby missing some of the benefits of RWD. In addition, an applied

Family participation to enhance care and tackle health worker shortages in resource-limited hospitals: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A growing global shortage of health workers is limiting access to health care, especially in resource-limited countries. Family participation in hospital care could enhance care while tackling health worker shortages. With the same resources, it might deliver additional and more personalised care. This review assessed the effect and safety of family participation interventions in the care of hospitalised adults in resource-limited settings and, ultimately, if it is a viable strategy to tackle health worker shortages. METHODS: For this systematic review, Medline, Embase, CINAHL and

Medication holidays in osteoporosis: evidence-based recommendations from the Italian guidelines on 'Diagnosis, risk stratification, and continuity of care of fragility fractures' based on a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable, chronic diseases need pharmacological interventions for long periods or even throughout life. The temporary or permanent cessation of medication for a specific period, known as a 'medication holiday,' should be planned by healthcare professionals. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the association between continuity (adherence or persistence) of treatment and several outcomes in patients with fragility fractures in the context of the development of the Italian Guidelines. DESIGN: Systematic review. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and t
