PURPOSE: Although posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) using stand-alone cages was a popular arthrodesis method, the effectiveness of using such cages has been questioned. We assessed retrospectively the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of PLIF surgery using stand-alone cages for the treatment of degenerative lumbar spine disease, the incidences of pseudoarthrosis, and its risk factors.

Medical devices implanted in subcutaneous tissue elicit wound-healing events that encapsulate the device. To investigate the foreign-body response to devices of clinically relevant size, we studied the relationship between capsule thickness, vascular density, and blood flow within the capsule. In nine canines, we implanted 40 subcutaneous devices (polysulfone n=14, titanium n=17, silicone-coated n=9). Devices and surrounding tissue structures were harvested at 208 ± 142 (mean ± standard deviation) days after implantation. Tissues were processed for histological analysis with light microscopy.

PURPOSE: To report a case of pigmented deposits on a type I Boston keratoprosthesis (KPro) associated with the use of topical ibopamine as a treatment for hypotony.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: The dopamine-like agent ibopamine caused black deposits on the bandage lens and on the front plate of the Boston KPro that resulted in reduced visual acuity. Change to a daily disposable contact lens and regular cleaning of the KPro front plate with diluted baby shampoo eliminated this problem.

The scientific literature has demonstrated the use of the buccal fat pad (BFP) flap to cover bone grafts in the correction of maxillary osseous defects and in the closure of oroantral communications. The use of the pedicled BFP flap to provide an immediate blood supply to a recipient site is recommended to provide closure of oroantral communications. The author presents a case report of zygomatic implant surgery in which the BFP flap technique was used in the closure of an oroantral communication caused by maxillofacial surgery.
