X-Ray Diffraction of Collagen-Structured Water Molecules for Cancer Detection.

Structural biomarkers determined by X-ray scattering of the tissues can complement conventional histopathology and facilitate a fast triage procedure of cancer biopsy samples. It has been shown previously that lipid reflexes can distinguish cancerous from benign samples, except for fibroadenomas. In the present study, we demonstrate that fibroadenoma samples can be recognized using X-ray scattering of collagen. Moreover, we show that modifications in collagen structure are manifested in the water reflexes. Examination of diffraction patterns from water using two-dimensional Fourier transformat…

Neural control of the lower airways: Role in cough and airway inflammatory disease.

Airway function is under constant neurophysiological control, in order to maximize airflow and gas exchange and to protect the airways from aspiration, damage, and infection. There are multiple sensory nerve subtypes, whose disparate functions provide a wide array of sensory information into the CNS. Activation of these subtypes triggers specific reflexes, including cough and alterations in autonomic efferent control of airway smooth muscle, secretory cells, and vasculature. Importantly, every aspect of these reflex arcs can be impacted and altered by local inflammation caused by chronic lung …

Botulinum toxin therapy: distant effects on neuromuscular transmission and autonomic nervous system.

To evaluate distant effects of botulinum toxin, single fibre electromyography on the extensor digitorum communis muscle and six tests of cardiovascular reflexes were performed in five patients injected with BoTox (Oculinum(R) 20-130 units) for craniocervical dystonia and hemifacial spasm. Patients underwent two sessions of treatment and the second time the dosage was doubled. Botulinum toxin injection induced an increase of mean jitter value above normal limits in all cases. An increase of fibre density was recorded six weeks after the treatment. Cardiovascular reflexes showed mild abnormaliti…

Neurophysiological abnormalities in genuine female stress urinary incontinence.

Perineal sensory and motor function was investigated in 28 women with genuine stress incontinence of urine and compared with a matched control group. Electrosensitivity of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris and of the urethral mucosa was significantly diminished in these patients (eight measurements 'insensitive'). Three different reflex latency measurements (dorsal nerve to external anal sphincter, dorsal nerve to urethral sphincter, urethral mucosa to external anal sphincter) were prolonged in incontinence (14 absent reflexes). Mean motor unit potential duration of the external anal sphincter …

[Vertigo, dizziness and falls in the elderly].

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to find cause of dizziness, vertigo and falls in old age and to propose treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted from October 2003 to March 2004 with 100 patients over the age of 75 years: 72 women and 28 men. They complained of unsteadiness, vertigo, or falls. RESULTS: In this group of patients, 68% were found to have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, 9% neurologic problems, 5% Meniere disease, 4% vestibular areflexia, 8% a rare cause such as a psychiatric or vascular disorder, and no cause was found in 6%. The diagnosis of Benig…

Vestibulo-ocular arreflexia in families with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (Machado-Joseph disease).

OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of vestibulo-ocular arreflexia in patients with Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), which can easily be diagnosed at the bedside. METHODS: Seven patients with MJD from five unrelated families and 11 patients with sporadic or hereditary cerebellar ataxia other than MJD underwent a detailed neuro-otological and oculomotor examination. Six MJD and five non-MJD patients also underwent electro-oculographic recordings and caloric tests. RESULTS: Gaze evoked nystagmus, smooth pursuit, and saccade abnormalities were found in both MJD and non-MJD patients. However, in al…

[Immunoadsorption therapy for Fisher's syndrome: analysis of the recovery process of external ophthalmoplegia and the removal ability of anti-GQ1b antibodies].

The beneficial effect of plasma exchange, plasmapheresis or immunoadsorption therapy on Fisher's syndrome, suggested previously, has not bee … ; ranging from 0 to 30 for external ophthalmoplegia, from 0 to 10 for ataxia, and from 0 to 16 for areflexia. Tryptophan- or phenylalanine-linked polyvinyl alcohol gel column (TR-350, PH-350) was used as an adsorbent. In a patient who had IgG anti-GQ1b antibody and another patient who had both IgG and IgM anti-GQ1b antibodies, we compared the effectivene …

Voluntary stimulus-sensitive jerks and jumps mimicking myoclonus or pathological startle syndromes.

Five patients who presented with stimulus-induced jerking as part of an apparent myoclonic or pathological startle syndrome are reported. Neurophysiological observations in these patients suggested the jerks were voluntary in origin. These included (a) variable latencies to the onset of stimulus induced jerks, (b) latencies were greater than that seen in reflex myoclonus of cortical or brainstem origin, and were (c) longer than the fastest voluntary reaction times of normal subjects, (d) variable patterns of muscle recruitment within each jerk and, (e) significant habituation with repeated sti…

Neonatal hyperekplexia: a case report.

We report the case of a baby with transient generalized stiffness noticeable from the first days of life, hyperreflexia, massive jerks in response to sudden tactile and acoustic stimuli, and long-lasting myoclonic jerks closely resembling epileptic seizures. The father and paternal grandfather both had hyperekplexia. At age 3 years, the child had normal psychomotor development and persistent abnormal startle response to unexpected sounds or touch.

Relationship between various clinical signs in lesions of the descending motor system (a statistical study).

Classical upper motor neuron disease findings weakness, hypertonus, hyperreflexia, clonus and decreased skill), in patients with lesions of the descending motor system as manifested by extensor plantar responses, were statistically analyzed to determine if there was a relationship between them. In the upper extremity a highly significant relationship existed between weakness and decreased skill (p<0.005). In the lower extremity a highly significant relationship was noted between hyperreflexia and clonus (p<0.005) and a significant relationship existed between weakness and hypertonus (0.025>p>0…
