Confocal fundus imaging with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope in eyes with cataract.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: The study aimed to determine the influence of increased intraocular light scatter on the contrast in scanning laser ophthal … at laser wavelengths of 633 and 780 nm. Visibility of the fundus was determined by measurements of retinal contrast. SLO images were compared with standard fundus photographs. RESULTS: SLO images obtained before surgery revealed details of the retina that were unresolvable in the fundus photographs because of light scattering. By using one of the three …

Hypothesis: the possible role of magnesium and copper deficiency in retinopathy of prematurity.

This hypothesis states that magnesium and copper (Cu) deficiency as well as high arterial oxygen pressure may contribute to the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a major cause of blindness in very low birthweight preterm infants. Infants at highest risk have severe respiratory distress with hypoxia and require prolonged oxygen supplements. The retina is a multilayer sheet of neural tissue very rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), oxygen, and mitochondria, with the highest oxygen consumption of all body tissues. Oxygen free radicals which are generated during metabolism …

[Activity of tissue and plasma kallikrein and level of their precursors in eye tissue structures and media of healthy rabbits].

Activity of tissue and blood plasma kallikreins as well as total content of their inactive precursors were studied in rabbit eye structures and media: iris, ciliary body, cornea, vascular striatum, retina, aqueous humor, tear liquid, lacrimal gland by means of fluorimetric procedure using Z-Phe-Arg-MCA as a substrate. Dissimilar capacity of the trypsin soya bean inhibitor and of aprotinin (basic inhibitor of Kunitz type) to inhibit tissue and blood plasma kallikreins enabled to differentiate the enzymatic activity. Lacrimal gland contained the highest activity of tissue kallikrein which amount…

S-antigen: experimental autoimmune uveitis induced in guinea pigs with two synthetic peptides.

Experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) was observed in Hartley guinea pigs following immunization with two small synthetic peptides, peptide … orneal hyperemia. Histopathologically, a severe inflammatory response involving the uveal tract and retina was observed. In these eyes the photoreceptor cell layer of the retina was destroyed. A subretinal exudate containing mononuclear cells and polymorphonuclear leukocytes was also present. In addition, animals with EAU showed an associated pinealitis …

Amnestic potency of proline analogs correlates with anti-spreading depression potency.

L-Proline and some of its analogs have been shown to prevent spreading depression (SD) in the chick retina at relatively low concentrations and to impair memory processing without provoking toxic or electrophysiological disturbances. Both effects are hypothesized to be caused by inhibition of the effects of glutamate released into the extracellular space. L-Proline, its D-enantiomer, six proline analogs including two homologs (L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid and DL-pipecolic acid), and five other compounds were examined for their effects on spreading depression and their amnestic and electrophys…

The organization of tissues of the eye by different collagen types.

Bovine cornea, sclera, iris, ciliary body, choroid, zonular fibers, lens capsule, lens nucleus, vitreous body, and retina were investigated for collagen content and type. Cornea, sclera, iris, ciliary body, choroid, lens capsule, and vitreous body contain hydroxyproline, whereas in zonular fibers, lens nucleus, and retina no hydroxyproline was detectable. Preparative isolation of collagen was achieved by digestion of the different eye tissues with pepsin. The pepsin-solubilized collagen was separated by differential salt precipitation into different collagen types. The polyacrylamide gel elect…

Sensory evolution: A dazzling hack to cope with bright light in owls and whales.

When exposed to sudden changes in light intensity, rod-dominated retinas of animals with highly sensitive dim-vision risk critical damage. A new study finds that owls and deep-diving whales have evolved an identical photoprotection mechanism to delay toxic all-trans retinal release, a discovery with potential medical implications.

Transscleral ocular siderosis.

Intraocular migration of iron from iron foreign bodies in an extraocular or intrascleral location was studied in rabbits. Focal changes occurred in the choroid and retina beneath the foreign bodies. Significant amounts of iron diffused through the sclera into the globes. This iron was typically deposited in the epithelium of the ciliary processes and in the tissues at the choroid-scleral junction in the posterior pole.

[Retinal angiomatoses].

The three classical angiomatoses of the retina are described on the basis of the clinical picture. If early diagnosis is possible, the otherwise inevitable progression to exudative retinal detachment and secondary glaucoma may be avoided through extensive coagulation by laser, xenon or cryopexy. - The prognosis is best in Leber's retinitis; it in much poorer in cases of von Hippel-Lindau angiomatosis and primary Coats' disease.

Causes of refraction changes: a classification.

This classification of refraction changes suggests new and early approaches to the treatment of complications of myopia. By appreciating the ultrasonic work on accommodation by Coleman, The field is opened for a fresh study of such diseases as macular degeneration; diseases of the vitreous, even glaucoma; cataracts; and retinal detachments. Other diseases of the retina for which the causes are obscure may be viewed for possible help, if not a cure.

Ocular findings in the intravenous drug abuser.

Two patients with talc emboli of the retinal vasculature, both of them intravenous drug abusers, are described. One underwent a pars plana vitrectomy for removal of the vascularized vitreous mass that obscured the retina. The vitreous mass was presumably a result of retinal neovascularization secondary to the talc embolic. Other ocular findings that may be observed in the intravenous drug abuser are described.

Differences in the Effect of Dopamine on the Phototransduction Between Lampreys and Jawed Vertebrates.

Dopamine is one of the most important neurotransmitters for regulating retinal function and adjusting vision to the diurnal cycle. It exerts its regulatory effects, in part, through the cAMP pathway. Previous studies have demonstrated that dopamine affects phototransduction in amphibian rods, and that elevated intracellular levels of cAMP modulate the function of vertebrate rods and cones. Lamprey, the most primitive vertebrate, could be valuable for studying the evolution of dopamine regulatory loops in the retina. We examined whether the photoresponse properties of long (cone-like) and short…

UV-protective sunscreen compounds and their differential accumulation across ocular tissues in fish eyes from Baltic Sea.

Many fish species achieve ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection by accumulating mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) from their diet. High concentrations are often found in the eyes, but the localization of MAAs in specific fish eye tissues is unknown. In the present study we dissected the eyes of six fish species, and prepared cornea, lens, vitreous body and a mixed tissue sample consisting of retina, choroidea and sclera (RCS). Furthermore, to test if MAAs are transferred further up the food web, we investigated the occurrence of MAAs also in eyes of warm-blooded piscine predators. Most, but…

FGF2 Deficiency Modulates Early Microglial Responses Without Affecting Photoreceptor Survival in a Retinitis Pigmentosa Mouse Model.

Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is expressed in retinal Müller glia cells, and its expression increases in response to photoreceptor degeneration. To investigate the physiological relevance of FGF2, we analyzed retinal morphology and cellular responses in Fgf2-deficient (Fgf2-/-) mice. Loss of FGF2 did not affect photoreceptor survival, retinal vasculature, or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) integrity. To further understand its role in retinal degeneration, Fgf2-/- mice were crossed with Pde6bSTOP/STOP mice, a model of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We then analyzed outer nuclear layer thicknes…

Bi-allelic variants in FSD1L cause retinitis pigmentosa with or without neurological involvement.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited retinal disease (IRD) characterized usually by progressive photoreceptor degeneration, leading to night blindness, peripheral visual field loss, and can progress to central vision impairment in some individuals. Despite advances in genomic diagnostics, many individuals with RP remain without a molecular diagnosis. We identified bi-allelic ultra-rare variants in fibronectin type II and Spry domain-containing protein 1-like (FSD1L) in six individuals with RP with or without neurological features from four unrelated families. FSD1L encodes a cytoplasmic p…
