Key barriers and enablers associated with uptake and continuation of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in the public sector in Zimbabwe: Qualitative perspectives of general population clients at high risk for HIV.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the perspectives and preferences of clients eligible for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is essential to designing programs that meet clients' needs. To date, most PrEP programs in limited-resource settings have been implemented by partner organizations for specific target populations, but the government of Zimbabwe aims to make PrEP available to the broader population at substantial risk in public sector clinics. However, there is limited information on general population perspectives about PrEP in Zimbabwe. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted to explore clie

Role of Technology in Promoting Heart Healthy Behavior Change to Increase Equity in Optimal Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Populations most affected by cardiovascular health disparities, including underrepresented populations with lower socioeconomic status, people with disabilities, and those living in underserved rural communities, are disproportionately exposed to adverse social determinants of health. Specifically, economic instability and suboptimal living conditions within the neighborhood and built environment directly determine access to resources and opportunities for healthful behaviors. In this scientific statement, we examined the technology-enabled interventions that address cardiovascular health beha

A Community-Based Usability Study of an AI-Enabled Oral Cancer Screening App Operated by Village Health Volunteers: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer is a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries, where access to specialist care and early detection remains limited. Mobile health technologies supported by artificial intelligence (AI) offer a scalable approach to extend screening services into underserved communities. In Thailand, village health volunteers (VHVs) are key frontline workers who provide preventive services and bridge gaps between rural populations and specialist care. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the technical development of RiskOCA (Risk Assessment for Oral Cancer using

A scoping review of children's and adolescents' active travel in China.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Active travel (AT) is a frequent and feasible source of daily physical activity for school-aged youth; however, no comprehensive synthesis has mapped the evidence for China. This scoping review aimed to characterize the current research landscape on AT among children and adolescents in China and identify gaps to guide future research and policy. METHODS: This study searched five databases (Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE, and ERIC) from inception to 1 December 2025. Quantitative studies in English that examined AT among Chinese children and adolescents were

The Effect of Mobile Health Intervention on Prelacteal Feeding Among Mothers in the First Month After Birth in South Ethiopia: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Prelacteal feeding, the practice of giving newborns substances other than breast milk within the first few days of life, remains a common yet harmful practice in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. No evidence in Ethiopia indicates that mHealth can help improve prelacteal feeding. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mobile health (mHealth) intervention on reducing prelacteal feeding practices and improving antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) utilization among mothers in South Ethiopia. Methods: A cluster-randomized controlled trial (CRT) wa

Where do delays occur? A systematic review of the barriers to early breast cancer diagnosis across South Africa's health system.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among South African women, yet the country has the lowest 5-year survival rate among the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), at just 40%. Earlier diagnosis contributes to survival rates exceeding 90% in many high-income countries. We synthesised the evidence to identify barriers to early breast cancer diagnosis in South Africa and inform policy interventions. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. DATA SOU

The Connection Between Socioeconomic Factors and Dietary Habits of Children with Down Syndrome in Croatia.

Children with Down syndrome often face significant feeding difficulties and health comorbidities that may contribute to undernutrition or obesity. This study assessed dietary habits and nutritional status among 104 children with Down syndrome in Croatia, representing 11.5% of this population. Results showed that over 30% of children aged 1 to 15 were overweight. Over 60% never consumed whole grain bread, while more than 50% avoided fish, nuts, or seeds. Despite rural families more frequently producing their own food (meat p = 0.009; fruits/vegetables p = 0.035), no significant improvement was

Prescribed medications for patients with amphetamine-type stimulant use disorder seen in rural-serving Pacific Northwest primary care clinics.

BACKGROUND: Amphetamine-type stimulant use and overdoses have increased sharply across the US in recent years, largely driven by methamphetamine. Increased access to treatments for amphetamine-type stimulant use disorder (AT-StUD), including in primary care settings, is needed to mitigate these problems, yet effective behavioral treatments are often inaccessible and there are no FDA-approved medications for AT-StUD. In the current study, we characterize how often patients with clinically documented AT-StUD in predominantly rural-serving Pacific Northwest primary care clinics received medicatio

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and immunization status among registered sex workers: A pilot study in lower Bavaria, Germany.

BACKGROUND: Sex workers are often considered at elevated risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This pilot study describes the socio‑epidemiological characteristics of registered sex workers in a rural German setting, estimates the prevalence of four STIs (HIV, hepatitis B [HBV], hepatitis C [HCV], and syphilis [lues]), compares these with the local population, and assesses HBV immunization coverage. METHODS: Under §10 of the Prostitute Protection Act (ProstSchG), annual health consultations are mandatory; voluntary serologic testing is permitted under §19 of the Infection Protectio
