Sibutramine hydrochloride (SH) is a banned weight-loss drug, but its illegal addition to health products is still rampant. This suggests a very urgent need for a fast and precise detection method for SH. Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a promising candidate for this purpose, but the weak affinity between SH and bare metal limits its direct SERS detection. We have developed a Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticle (NP)/iridium(III) complex-based sensing platform for the sensitive luminescence "turn-on" sensing of cyanide ions, an acutely toxic pollutant. The assay is based on the quenching effect of Ag@Au NPs on the emission of complex 1, but luminescence is restored after the addition of cyanide anions due to their ability to dissolve the Au shell. This study presents the first data on trace element and organic pollutant concentrations in the Critically Endangered Balearic shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus collected in 2010 and 2011 in Portugal. A new fluorescent sensor 1, based on the naphthalimide chromophore and thioether-rich crown receptor, exhibited dual signaling behaviors for Hg(2+) and Ag(+) in aqueous solution. Upon addition of Hg(2+), the fluorescence intensity enhanced in a linear fashion with a quantum yield increase of about 5-fold. Moreover, with the 1-Hg(2+) complex, Ag(+) was easily recognized by a marked fluorescence quenching. The living cells image experiments demonstrate the value of sensor 1 in fluorescent visualization of Hg(2+) ions in biological systems.

Somatostatin-14-like and Somatostatin-28-like peptides have been localized by a light microscopic immunohistochemical method. In this chapter, we review the experience gained in the burn unit treatment of two of the severe exfoliating disorders, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). Septic mortality was higher if high doses of corticosteroids were given versus the current protocol, which avoids these drugs. Current controversies include the role of topical therapy, leukopenia, and invasive catheters in septic complications as well as nutritional requirements. Concomitant viral infection and the macrophage may each play a role in the etiology of TEN and SJS.

Adult rats of Wistar and Sprague Dawley strains were exposed to a 21-day period of hypoxia (10% O2). At the end of this period, the hypoxic animals and paired controls were anaesthetised, dissected and tissues were taken for light microscopy.
