Efficacy of a sun protection workbook for kidney transplant recipients: a randomized controlled trial of a culturally sensitive educational intervention.

A culturally sensitive educational intervention that encouraged sun protection behaviors among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) was developed and the short-term efficacy was evaluated. Non-Hispanic White, Hispanic/Latino and non-Hispanic Black patients, who received a transplant 2-24 months prior to the study, were randomized into two study groups: intervention versus standard of care. Electronic reminders tailored to the weather conditions were sent every 2 weeks by text message or email. Self-reported surveys and biologic measurements were obtained prior to the intervention and 6 weeks la

Supraestructure maxillectomy and orbital exenteration for treatment of basal cell carcinoma of inferior eyelid: case report and review.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent type of skin cancer in humans, with cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation as an important risk factor for development of illness such as severe solar burns during childhood or adolescence. BCC is mainly located on sun-exposed sites, head and neck being the areas of more incidences; although nose, eyelids and periorbitary tissue are unfavorable due to cosmetic results that BCC involves. Tumors can be classified as nodular, superficial, micronodular, morphea variety, infiltrating, pigmented, metatypic and fibroepithelioma of Pinkus. Several

Fisetin, a 3,7,3',4'-Tetrahydroxyflavone Inhibits the PI3K/Akt/mTOR and MAPK Pathways and Ameliorates Psoriasis Pathology in 2D and 3D Organotypic Human Inflammatory Skin Models.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease that involves the interaction of immune and skin cells, and is characterized by cytokine-driven epidermal hyperplasia, deviant differentiation, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Because the available treatments for psoriasis have significant limitations, dietary products are potential natural sources of therapeutic molecules, which can repair the molecular defects associated with psoriasis and could possibly be developed for its management. Fisetin (3,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxyflavone), a phytochemical naturally found in pigmented fruits and vegetabl

Immunohistochemical Expression of Chemokine Receptor CXCR3 and its Ligand CXCL 11 in Basal Cell Carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer worldwide. The pathogenesis of BCC involves interplay between various environmental and genetic factors. It is believed that chemokines play a significant role in the modulation of cancer growth by generating autocrine and paracrine signaling effects. The present study was conducted to elucidate the expression of chemokine, CXCL11, and its receptor CXCR3, and their interaction with tumor cells and peri-tumoral stroma in various subtypes of BCC. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohi

Conjunctival Melanoma: Current Management.

Conjunctival melanoma is a rare, potentially lethal cancer that mainly affects fair-skinned individuals. The tumor mostly arises from primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia. The presentation of conjunctival melanoma varies and should be clinically differentiated from an array of ocular surface pigmented and nonpigmented lesions. Mutations in the oncogenes BRAF (V600E) and NRAS, and the tumor suppressor gene NF1, are associated with worse survival. UV signature mutations are frequently observed in the bulbar conjunctival melanoma. The TNM staging classifies conjunctival melanoma according

Successful treatment of retinopathy of prematurity in oculocutaneous albinism with OCA2 variants: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of autosomal recessive hereditary disorders that affect melanin biosynthesis, resulting in abnormalities in hair, skin, and eyes. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a proliferative retinopathy mainly observed in premature infants with low birth weight and early gestational age, but it can also affect full-term infants or children with normal weight, particularly in developing countries. The coexistence of ROP and OCA is rare. There is limited documentation regarding treatment approaches, with few studies reporting positive outcomes with las

Successful Treatment of Pigmentary Disorders in Asians With a Novel 730-nm Picosecond Laser.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Until recently, quality-switched nanosecond lasers have been the workhorse lasers in treating pigmented lesions. However, the recently commercialized picosecond lasers have provided physicians with a novel method to manage pigmented lesions. Most recently, the first picosecond laser with a 730-nm wavelength was developed to specifically target melanin and melanocytes. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report on two Asian patients with freckles, lentigines, and melasma who were successfully treated with a novel 730-nm Ti:Sapphire picosecond laser (Picoway®; Syner

A Prospective Randomized Controlled Study of Oral Tranexamic Acid for the Prevention of Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation After Q-Switched 532-nm Nd:YAG Laser for Solar Lentigines.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Q-switched (QS) 532-nm Nd:YAG laser is one of the treatment options for solar lentigines (SLs). However, the high incidence of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is concerning, especially in dark-complexioned skin. Tranexamic acid (TA) can decrease melanogenesis and has been used to treat melasma. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral TA for PIH prevention and clearance in patients with SL treated with QS 532-nm Nd:YAG laser. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with SL treated with QS 532-nm Nd:YAG laser were enrol

Economic Costs Avoided by Diagnosing Melanoma Six Months Earlier Justify >100 Benign Biopsies.

New melanoma drugs bring enormous benefits but do so at significant costs. Because melanoma grows deeper and deadlier over time, deeper lesions are costlier due to increased sentinel lymph node biopsy, chemotherapy, and disease-associated income loss. Prior studies have justified pigmented lesion biopsies on a "value per life" basis; by contrast we sought to assess how many biopsies are justified per melanoma found on a purely economic basis. We modeled how melanomas in the United States would behave if diagnosis were delayed by 6 months, eg, not biopsied, only observed until the next surveill

Functional assessment of tyrosinase variants identified in individuals with albinism is essential for unequivocal determination of genotype-to-phenotype correlation.

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous albinism type 1 (OCA1), caused by pathogenic variations in the tyrosinase gene (TYR), is the most frequent and severe form of hypopigmentary disorder worldwide. While OCA1A manifests as a complete loss of melanin pigment, patients with OCA1B show residual pigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes. Limited experimental evidence suggests retention of TYR in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) causes OCA1 pathogenesis. However, a comprehensive functional analysis of TYR missense variations and correlation with genotype is lacking. OBJECTIVES: Functional characterization of no

In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy of extramammary Paget disease: diagnostic evaluation and surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a diagnostic challenge. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) has been reported to be useful for in vivo skin tumor evaluation. It may also assist in the surgical management of EMPD lesions. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe confocal features of EMPD and correlate them with histopathologic findings. The potential of RCM to map the lesions for subsequent surgical management was also investigated. METHODS: A total of 23 lesions from 14 recruited patients were evaluated by RCM and histopathologic examination. RCM was used to delineate preo
