Impaired emotion recognition is associated with sleep-related hypoxic burden.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of emotion recognition performance from sleep metrics, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep architecture. METHODS: Adults from the Icelandic population completed the Penn Emotion Recognition Task, assessing facial expressions presented with different intensities. Subsequently, participants underwent three consecutive nights with self-applied polysomnography. Sleep parameters were averaged across nights. Regression analyses, adjusted for age, gender, and depressive symptoms were used to examine associations between sleep and emotion recogni

[Long-term results of surgical pharyngectomy (uvulo-palato-pharyngoplasty) versus office CO2 laser (L.A.U.P.) for the treatment of uncomplicated snoring].

Two treatments are habitually proposed for snoring without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: the surgical pharyngotomy, and the treatment by laser done in the office. Our study analyses retrospectively, by telephone questionnaire, a group of 168 snorers, without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, treated by pharyngotomy (n = 71) or CO2 laser (n = 97) between 1989 and 1993. Results after a mean follow-up of 5 years, with a minimal of 3 years, show for the two procedures the same efficacity, and an equivalent prevalence of side effects. The rate of satisfaction for the patient and her bed-partner

[X-Ray upper airway changes in individuals suffering from obstructive respiratory disorders during sleep].

Obstructive respiratory disorders during sleep present an important medical and social problem. Serious dysfunctions of cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine and other vital systems of the body reduce longevity and life quality. On the other hand, load nocturnal snore and abnormal diurnal sleepiness cause great damage to family life, reduce working capacity and induce accidents. X-ray visualization of the upper airways is essential in diagnosing obstructive upper airway states and selecting patients for surgical treatment. The paper presents the authors' own experience in using various X-ray diag

Clinical Application of Pediatric Sleep Endoscopy: An International Survey.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate through an international survey the actual clinical application of drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) in pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and to clarify the use, application, clinical indications, and protocol of pediatric DISE. METHODS: A specific survey about pediatric DISE was initially developed by five international otolaryngologists with expertise in pediatric sleep apnea and drug-induced sleep endoscopy and was later spread to experts in the field of sleep apnea, members of different OSA-related associations. RESULTS: A total of 101 par

A comparison of cardiovascular disease associations of time-domain oximetry parameters in sleep apnoea cases from the Sleep Heart Health Study.

Polysomnograms (PSGs) contain a wealth of physiological information that is routinely recorded but not utilised in sleep studies. Intermittent hypoxia arising from obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) events is an important risk in the later development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Analysis of oximetry patterns from PSG studies may enable early assessment of CVD risk. The aim of this study was to compare associations of different time-domain oximetry patterns with incident CVD in OSA patients. All participants with OSA and no pre-existing CVD at baseline or within the first two years of follow-u

Retinal abnormalities, although relatively common in sleep clinic patients referred for polysomnography, are largely unrelated to sleep-disordered breathing.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There has been long-standing interest in potential links between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and eye disease. This study used retinal photography to identify undiagnosed retinal abnormalities in a cohort of sleep clinic patients referred for polysomnography (PSG) and then determined associations with PSG-quantified sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) severity. METHODS: Retinal photographs (n = 396 patients) were taken of each eye prior to polysomnography and graded according to validated, standardized, grading scales. SDB was quantified via in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG;

Measurement of snoring and stertor using the Sonomat to assess effectiveness of upper airway surgery in children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The success of surgical treatment for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing is typically assessed using the mixed and obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (MOAHI). Although an important metric, previous work has shown that snoring and stertor are also associated with sleep disruption. Our aim was to assess the efficacy of surgery using the Sonomat (Sonomedical Pty Ltd), a noncontact sleep assessment system, that accurately records complete and partial upper airway obstruction. METHODS: Forty children (< 18 years) had a Sonomat study, in their own beds, before and after surgery. A

Tracheal sounds for the scoring of sleep respiratory events in children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Oronasal thermistor and nasal cannula are recommended for the scoring of respiratory events (RE) but these sensors are poorly tolerated in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate tracheal sounds (TS) and suprasternal pressure (SSP) for the scoring of RE during sleep in children. METHODS: We compared the detection and characterization of RE by AASM-recommended sensors ("AASM" scoring), with the detection and characterization of RE by the combination of TS and SSP with respiratory inductance plethysmography-sum (TS-RIP scoring), and TS and SSP only (TS scoring). [Sleep disturbances--aspects of obstructive and sleep-related breathing disorders].

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a wide spread affliction in industrialised countries. OSA has to be distinguished from simple snoring which is socially annoying but physically harmless, since it does not harm the physical health. Patients with OSA complain about disruptive snoring, daytime sleepiness, and loss of intellectual power. OSA is associated with increased mortality. It is possible to distinguish between complete respiratory pauses or apnoea and periods of too shallow breathing or hypopnoea. History taking, clinical examination, recording of daytime sleepiness, and cardio-respiratory

Sleep Apnea Detection Based on Thoracic and Abdominal Movement Signals of Wearable Piezo-Electric Bands.

Physiologically, the thoracic (THO) and abdominal (ABD) movement signals, captured using wearable piezo-electric bands, provide information about various types of apnea, including central sleep apnea (CSA) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the use of piezo-electric wearables in detecting sleep apnea events has been seldom explored in the literature. This study explored the possibility of identifying sleep apnea events, including OSA and CSA, by solely analyzing one or both the THO and ABD signals. An adaptive non-harmonic model was introduced to model the THO and ABD signals, which a

Effect of simulated obstructive hypopnea and apnea on thoracic aortic wall transmural pressures.

Preliminary evidence supports an association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and thoracic aortic dilatation, although potential causative mechanisms are incompletely understood; these may include an increase in aortic wall transmural pressures, induced by obstructive apneas and hypopneas. In patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, mean blood pressure (MBP) in the thoracic aorta and esophageal pressure was simultaneously recorded by an indwelling aortic pigtail catheter and a balloon-tipped esophageal catheter in randomized order during: normal breathing, simulated obstructive hypopn

Mobile Health for Central Sleep Apnea Screening Among Patients With Stable Heart Failure: Single-Cohort, Open, Prospective Trial.

BACKGROUND: Polysomnography is the gold standard for detection of central sleep apnea in patients with stable heart failure. However, this procedure is costly, time consuming, and a burden to the patient and therefore unsuitable as a screening method. An electronic health (eHealth) app to measure overnight oximetry may be an acceptable screening alternative, as it can be automatically analyzed and is less burdensome to patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether overnight pulse oximetry using a smartphone-compatible oximeter can be used to detect central sleep apnea in a populatio

Effects of Commonly Prescribed Medications on Sleep: A Review of the Literature.

This review synthesizes literature on how commonly prescribed medications-antihypertensives, statins, antidepressants, levothyroxine, proton pump inhibitors, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, and metformin-affect sleep. With many primary care patients reporting sleep issues and more than half of American adults using prescription medications, understanding these effects is essential. Methods included a comprehensive PubMed search of the past decade using relevant medication and sleep-related terms. A review of additional relevant references was also conducted. Our findings indicate that bet

Genetic and immunologic aspects of sleep and sleep disorders.

The study of genetics is providing new and exciting insights into the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Both normal sleep and several types of sleep disturbances have been found to have significant genetic influences, as have traits of normal sleep, such as those evident in EEG patterns and the circadian sleep-wake cycle. The circadian sleep-wake cycle is based on a complex feedback loop of genetic transcription over a 24-h cycle. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) have familial aggregation, and several genes have a strong association with

Work-related risk factors of sleep apnea: evidence from the Korean work, sleep, and health study.

OBJECTIVE: Occupational exposures are hypothesized to contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk, yet evidence from large, population-based studies remains scarce. This study aimed to investigate the association between a wide range of work-related factors and sleep apnea risk among Korean workers. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Korean Work, Sleep, and Health Study (KWSHS), a nationwide longitudinal panel survey conducted between 2022 and 2024. Work-related exposures included long working hours, shift work, occupational stress, emotional labor, physical or chemical hazards, and ergo

Maternal sleep disordered breathing and offspring growth outcome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sleep disordered breathing is extremely common in pregnancy and is a risk factor for maternal complications. Animal models demonstrate that intermittent hypoxia causes abnormal fetal growth. However, there are conflicting data on the association between maternal sleep disordered breathing and offspring growth in humans. We investigated this association by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. Sixty-three manuscripts, and total study population of 67, 671, 110 pregnant women were included. Thirty-one studies used subjective methods to define sleep disordered breathing, 24 applied ob

Sleep respiratory arrhythmias in control subjects, narcoleptics and non-cataplectic hypersomniacs.

Normal subjects may present central-type apneas or periodic respiration during sleep (stages I and II and paradoxical sleep). The importance of these respiratory disorders increases with age. Hypersomniac patients can manifest either similar or more significant sleep respiratory disorders than normal subjects. The presence of cataplexy or obesity does not permit the prediction of the existence of respiratory arrhythmias or of their type. Sleep respiratory arrhythmias of central type are not likely to cause hypersomnia; however, an aggravating role may be played by obstructive apneas.

Complete polysomnographic parameters in infants with severe laryngomalacia prior to and after supraglottoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngomalacia is the most common congenital laryngeal anomaly. Because of supraglottic prolapse, laryngomalacia may be associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep disturbances. The effects of OSA and sleep disorders in children include failure to thrive, cognitive and behavioral disturbances, cardiovascular compromise, and an association with sudden infant death syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of OSA and sleep disturbances in children with severe laryngomalacia through complete nocturnal polysomnography, as well as to establish the effects of supraglot

A randomized, double crossover study to investigate the influence of saline infusion on sleep apnea severity in men.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is commoner in patients with fluid-retaining states than in those without fluid retention, in men than in women, and worsens with aging. In men, OSA severity is related to the amount of fluid shifting out of the legs overnight, but a cause-effect relationship is not established. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that mimicking fluid overload during sleep would increase severity of OSA more in older (≥ 40 years) than in younger men (< 40 years). DESIGN: Randomized, single-blind, double crossover study. SETTING: Research sleep laboratory.
