Estimating the prevalence of illicit opioid use in New York City using multiple data sources.

BACKGROUND: Despite concerns about its health and social consequences, little is known about the prevalence of illicit opioid use in New York City. Individuals who misuse heroin and prescription opioids are known to bear a disproportionate burden of morbidity and mortality. Service providers and public health authorities are challenged to provide appropriate interventions in the absence of basic knowledge about the size and characteristics of this population. While illicit drug users are underrepresented in population-based surveys, they may be identified in multiple administrative data source

The underlying interactome of childhood obesity: the potential role of sleep.

Fine-tuning and integration between social rhythms and biological rhythms should be a priority for all, especially for children. As such, the opportunity to sleep should fit the evolving needs for sleep in a child. Unfortunately, children today are highly unlikely to obtain sufficient sleep or live under stable and regular schedules. Poor or dysregulated sleep affects the regulation of homeostatic and hormonal systems underlying somatic and intellectual growth, maturation, and bioenergetics. Therefore, in the prevention and management of childhood obesity, assessments of the “obesogenic” lifes

The effects of local medicinal knowledge and hygiene on helminth infections in an Amazonian society.

Social science has long recognized the importance of understanding how interactions between culture and behavior shape disease patterns, especially in resource-poor areas where individuals draw on multiple medical treatments to maintain health. While global health programs aimed at controlling high infection rates of soil-transmitted helminthes among indigenous groups often acknowledge the value of local culture, little research has been able to examine this value. This study investigates the association between parental ethnomedical knowledge, parental biomedical knowledge, and household sani

Mast cells in melanocytic skin lesions. An immunohistochemical and quantitative study.

A large body of research establishes the efficacy of musical intervention in many aspects of physical, cognitive, communication, social, and emotional rehabilitation. However, the underlying neural mechanisms for musical therapy remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the potential neural correlates of musical therapy, focusing on the changes in the topology of emotion brain network. To this end, a Bayesian statistical approach and a cross-over experimental design were employed together with two resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) as controls. MEG recordings of 30 healthy subjec

Is parental coping associated with quality of life in juvenile idiopathic arthritis?

Parents of children with a chronic condition such as juvenile arthritis must cope with greater demands than those living with a healthy child. They must adopt different behaviours in order to lessen the impact on the family structure. Parental coping refers to the parent's specific cognitive and behavioural efforts to reduce or manage a demand on the family system. The aims of this study were: to describe coping in a cohort of parents of children with JIA; to determine whether quality of life is associated with parental coping; to explore whether socio-demographic factors such as child's age,

'Old' and 'new' institutions for persons with mental illness: treatment, punishment or preventive confinement?

Despite countless promises for a better life by national commissions, governments and the international community, there has evolved a vicious cycle of neglect, abandonment, indignity, cruel and inhuman treatment, and punishment of persons with mental illness. This shameful history of benign, and sometimes malignant, neglect of persons with mental illness is well understood, with the deep stigma and unredressed discrimination, the deplorable living conditions, and the physical and social barriers preventing their integration and full participation in society. The maltreatment of this vulnerabl

Brewing controversies: Darwinian perspective on the adaptive and maladaptive effects of caffeine and ethanol as dietary autonomic modulators.

Ethanol and caffeine are two of the oldest human drugs. Their pervasive integration into the modern human diet may reflect behavioral attempts to correct maladaptations induced by evolutionary displacement of the autonomic system. The dietary adoption of caffeine may parallel the emergence of cognition as an independent basis of competition. Enhancement of the cognitive ability to gather and process information likely evolved as a valuable adjunct to physical behavior in prehistoric fight-or-flight encounters. Caffeine effectively exploits this pre-existing association between adrenergic activ

Can we alter the natural history of Crohn disease in children?

The natural history of Crohn disease is characterized by recurrent bouts of active disease, the consequences of which can severely impair sufferers' physical and social functioning. Not only does the illness cause day-to-day morbidity for children but the consequence of the chronic inflammatory process also commonly results in the need for major intestinal surgery. The present challenge facing physicians treating children with Crohn disease is to alleviate symptoms and prolong periods of remission via the use of specifically targeted therapies while minimizing toxicity and promoting normal gro

Survival-weighted health profile for long-term survivors of acute myelogenous leukemia.

The objective of this study was to use survival-weighted psychometric scores (SWPS) to construct a 'health profile' for long-term survivors of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). The study cohort included all patients who had been diagnosed and treated in our institution from 1985 to 1999 and achieved complete remission after standard chemotherapy (n = 259). One hundred and four patients were interviewed by the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC)-QLQ-C30 questionnaire and the brief form of World Health Organization quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) to

Association and mediating pathways between intergenerational educational mobility and depressive symptoms: findings from high- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Education is an important determinant of health throughout the life course. However, less is understood about whether and how intergenerational educational mobility-comparing an individual's own and their parents' education-is associated with depressive symptoms among aging populations across diverse settings. This study examines this association and its mediating pathways. METHODS: Using data from six harmonized longitudinal aging studies: the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and its partner studies in England, European countries, South Korea, Mexico, and China, we conducted

Quality, Reliability, and Content Characteristics of Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook: A Mixed-Methods Cross-Platform Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Social media platforms have become major sources of health information, including content related to metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). While these platforms offer wide accessibility and high user engagement, concerns remain regarding the quality, reliability, and completeness of the information presented. Comparative evaluations across platforms integrating both quantitative quality assessment and qualitative insights are limited. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods content analysis was conducted on 45 publicly available videos (15 per platform) from TikTok, YouTube, and F

Adolescents' perceptions of tobacco and electronic cigarette prevention: Six school-based cohorts (2010/11-2023/24).

BACKGROUND: Adolescent tobacco use remains a major public health concern (World Health Organization, 2024). In recent years, electronic cigarettes have become a frequent pathway to nicotine initiation, posing new challenges for traditional school-based tobacco prevention strategies. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 5,658 students aged 11 to 18 years from secondary schools in Burgos (Spain), corresponding to six academic cohorts between 2010 and 2023. The study was carried out within the framework of a universal school-based prevention program targetin

Fire, temperature control, and silcrete heat treatment at Diepkloof and Mertenhof Rock Shelters, West Coast, South Africa.

Transformative technologies that alter raw material properties, rather than just raw material shape and size, are key proxies for the evolution of human cognition and social learning. Silcrete heat treatment in the southern African Middle Stone Age (MSA) is one such proxy. Yet debate now centers not on whether heat treatment occurred in the African MSA but on how it was organized across settings-from controlled insulated setups to embedded hearth-side practices-and how factors such as raw material properties and fire management conditioned those choices. In this study, we argue that archaeolog
