Critical Care Nurses' Moral Resilience, Moral Injury, Institutional Betrayal, and Traumatic Stress After COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a very rare condition that is seen at a rate of one in about 6000-8000 births. AIM: To offer a general view on the coexistence of SIT and gastric cancer, accompanied by a literature review. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Within the scope of this study, the case of a patient with gastric adenocarcinoma and SIT has been presented. Previous research on gastric cancer cases with SIT was reviewed through a comprehensive search of the PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar databases. The keywords used to conduct this research were "situs inversus totalis and gastr

Is PTSD-Phenotype Associated with HPA-Axis Sensitivity?: The Endocannabinoid System in Modulating Stress Response in Rats.

Endocannabinoids play a role in adaptation to stress and regulate the release of glucocorticoids in stressed and unstressed conditions. We recently found that basal corticosterone pulsatility may significantly impact the vulnerability for developing post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD), suggesting that the endocannabinoid system may contribute to its development. To examine this, we exposed rats to predator scent stress (PSS). Behavioral reactions were recorded seven days post-PSS. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was collected from anesthetized rats shortly after PSS exposure to determine the level

Pain and Trauma: The Role of Criterion A Trauma and Stressful Life Events in the Pain and PTSD Relationship.

Chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur, and research suggests that these 2 conditions exacerbate one another producing greater impact on normal functioning in combination than separately. The influence of traumatic experiences on both pain and PTSD has been shown, but the nature of this interplay remains unclear. Although Criterion A trauma is required for the diagnosis of PTSD, whether the association between PTSD and chronic pain is dependent on Criterion A is underexplored. In this observational cohort study, we examined the association between pain and P

Dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonists attenuate PTSD-like symptoms in mice exposed to single prolonged stress.

Medications that enhance dopaminergic neurotransmission can be useful in the pharmacotherapy of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which manifests as fearful memory retrieval, anxiety and depression. We examined the effects of subchronic (15 days) treatment with select dopaminergic medications, including bromocriptine, modafinil, dihydrexidine, rotigotine and pramipexole, in a mouse model of PTSD induced by single prolonged stress (mSPS). The potential antidepressant-like and anxiolytic effects of the medications were measured by the forced swim test (FST) and the elevated plus maze (EPM) t

A blast from the past: Civilians immediate psychological reactions and associative memory of prior events following exploding bus in Israel.

This study examined the association between self-report associative memories of prior traumatic events and psychological distress up to 48h after a terror attack. To date, the number of studies that examined this association is very small and most were conducted weeks or even months post event. For this purpose, we examined the association between self-report associative memories of prior traumatic events beyond factors such as previous exposure to trauma, political shift and sense of safety. The results showed that self-report associative memories of prior traumatic events were significantly

Predictors of severe psychological distress trajectory after nuclear disaster: evidence from the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

OBJECTIVES: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, which occurred after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in March 2011, may have a considerable long-term impact on the lives of area residents. The aims of this study were to determine the trajectories of psychological distress using 3-year consecutive data, and to find predictive factors of severe distress that may also prove useful for public health intervention. METHODS: Data were obtained on 12 371 residents who were registered in the municipalities categorised as complete evacuation areas for 3 years after the disas

[Physical and psychological therapy of adolescents with deformities of spinal cord and other inborn anomalies].

A group of 103 adolescents who have been exposed to war trauma was examined by a specialist of physical medicine and rehabilitation and pedagogue-psychologist, in relation to deformities of spinal cord and other inborn anomalies. Repeated screening and retest on the level of stress and depression was done after two years. In the meantime, majority of adolescents was on physical and psychological treatment. It was established that 47 adolescents (45.6%) have simultaneously had flat back and flat feet, and that 12 of them (25.5%) from the same group had had 4 traumatic experiences. During the fi

Neural plasticity and emotional memory.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is the pathological replay of emotional memory formed in response to painful, life-threatening, or horrifying events. In contrast, depression is often precipitated by more social context-related stressors. New data suggest that different types of life experiences can differentially impact biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, and behavior at the level of changes in gene expression. Repeated separation of neonatal rat pups from their mother results in many long-lasting alterations in biology and behavior paralleling that in depression, including hypercortisolism. The

Understanding the Psychological Impact of Medical Care Experiences on Adults With Craniofacial Conditions: A Pilot Survey of Traumatic Stress Symptoms and Resilience.

Craniofacial conditions often require extensive medical care and surgeries throughout childhood and adolescence. However, there is limited research investigating the psychological effects of craniofacial care, including risks for medical traumatic stress. This cross-sectional study investigated the medical care experiences of adults with craniofacial conditions, including the frequency of potentially traumatic medical events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and resilience. Participants (N=34; mean age 35.2 ± 12.2 y; 71% female) were recruited at 3 US pediatric hospitals and cra

Stress-activated leukocyte 12/15-lipoxygenase metabolite enhances struggle behaviour and tocotrienols relieve stress-induced behaviour alteration.

Stress induces emotional arousal causing anxiety, irritability, exaggerated startle behaviour, and hypervigilance observed in patients with trauma and stress-related mental disorders, including acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Central norepinephrine release promotes stress-induced emotional arousal. However, the regulator of emotional arousal remains unknown. Here, we show that the arachidonate-derived metabolite produced by stress-activated leukocyte 12/15-lipoxygenase is remarkably elevated in the plasma and upregulates the central norepinephrine release, resulting i

Biological Correlates of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG): A Literature Review.

Since the beginning of medical science, much research have focused on the psychopathological effects of traumatic experiences. Despite in past centuries the scientific literature on mental health has been mainly focused on the harmful effects of traumatic occurrences, more recently the idea of "post-traumatic growth" emerged, on the basis of a growing interest in the characteristics of resilience and possible positive consequences of trauma. In this framework, increasing attention is now being paid to the psychological meaning of PTG, with a consistent number of psychopathological and epidemio

Metabolic and endocrine dysfunctions in traumatic brain injury: Implications for cognitive recovery and therapeutic strategies.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) triggers a chain reaction of intricate metabolic abnormalities, sometimes leading to ongoing cognitive deficits. These abnormalities comprise dysregulation in trace element homeostasis, disrupted neurotransmitter modulation, increased lipid peroxidation, compromised glucose metabolism, and organ-specific metabolic changes. Most recent studies suggest that metabolic abnormalities are the root cause of cognitive decline in post-traumatic stress disorder. Restoring metabolic balance through therapeutic modalities, such as antioxidant therapy to combat lipid peroxidati

The Impact of an Intensive Care Diary on the Psychological Well-Being of Patients and Their Family Members: Longitudinal Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Thanks to medical and technological advancements, an increasing number of individuals survive admission to intensive care units. However, survivors often experience negative outcomes, including physical impairments and alterations in mental health. Anxiety, depression, cognitive impairments, post-traumatic stress disorders, and functional disorders are known collectively as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). Among the key triggering factors of this syndrome, memory impairment appears to play a significant role. AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the impact of an intensive care di
