Drug-Coated Balloon Treatment of Very Late Stent Thrombosis Due to Complicated Neoatherosclerosis.

We describe the treatment of a patient presenting with very-late stent thrombosis with the use of a drug-coated balloon. In this patient, optical coherence tomography disclosed that ruptured and complicated neoatherosclerosis was the underlying substrate responsible for the episode of very-late stent thrombosis. The potential use of drug-coated balloons in this unique scenario is discussed.

Famous.

A 62-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis experienced painless loss of vision in both eyes after starting fingolimod. Fundus examination revealed bilateral macular edema confirmed by optical coherence tomography. Fingolimod was discontinued, and a topical nonsteroidal inflammatory drug and corticosteroid were initiated. Within 2 months, vision returned to baseline with complete resolution of the macular edema.

Light and metabolism: label-free optical imaging of metabolic activities in biological systems [Invited].

Metabolic imaging is critical for understanding cellular functions beyond morphology, offering significant insights into various biological processes and disease states. Label-free optical imaging techniques stand out by providing high-resolution, molecularly specific, and/or non-invasive assessments of metabolic activity without relying on exogenous contrast agents. This review discusses the key photon-tissue interactions-absorption, emission, and scattering-that underpin label-free optical imaging modalities for interrogating tissue's metabolic activities at various scales. Specifically, pho

Retinal arteriovenous malformation and cerebral cavernous malformation in a 6-year-old child.

Retinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital, nonhereditary vascular anomalies of the retina. We report the case of a 6-year-old child presenting with recurrent frontal headaches. Funduscopy examination revealed an AVM in the right eye, inferior to the optic nerve head. Optical coherence tomography and retinal imaging confirmed the presence of an AVM measuring 3 disk diameters. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head revealed a cavernous malformation in the right frontal subcortical region.

The Use of Computer Tomography in Ophthalmology.

Fifty-three orbital lesions of various types were studied by computer tomography to assess the capabilities and limitations of this technique. Although CT scanning in ophthalmology is in its infancy, results showed that it is useful in the investigation of a number of pathological conditions, including congenital anomalies, arteriovenous malformations, bone lesions, trauma, inflammation, granulomas, pseudotumors, epidermoid cysts, and tumors arising in or near the optic nerve, behind the optic bulb, or in the lacrimal region, as well as changes following eye surgery.

Traumatic optic neuropathy management: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic optic neuropathy is classically described in up to 8% of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), but subclinical or undiagnosed optic nerve damage is much more common. When more sensitive testing is performed, at least half of patients with moderate to severe TBI demonstrate visual field defects or optic atrophy on examination with optical coherence tomography. Acute optic nerve compression and ischaemia in orbital compartment syndrome require urgent surgical and medical intervention to lower the intraocular pressure and diminish the risk of permanent optic nerve dysf

Retinal hemorrhages as one of complications of optic disc drusen during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Drusen of the optic nerve head are relatively benign and asymptomatic. They represent retinal hyaline corpuscles resulting from impaired axoplasmic transport of the retinal ganglion cells of optic nerve in front of the lamina cribrosa. They are usually detected accidentally, during a routine ophthalmologic examination. Most patients with optic disc drusen are not aware of the deterioration of their eyesight because of the slow progression of visual field defects. Damage in visual acuity due to optic disc drusen is rare. CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female patient in the sixth mont

Membrane tissue on the optic disc may cause macular schisis associated with a glaucomatous optic disc without optic disc pits.

This article reports a case of possible involvement of membrane tissue on the optic disc with macular schisis formation associated with glaucomatous optic disc without optic disc pits. A 78-year-old man presented with loss of central visual acuity of the left eye. He had a medical history of primary open-angle glaucoma. Visual acuity was 0.6 in his left eye, and funduscopy revealed macular schisis and a glaucomatous optic disc without optic disc pits. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed membrane tissue on the optic disc and a tunnel-like hyporeflective lesion connecting the schisis cav

Diffusion tensor imaging of the optic nerve in multiple sclerosis: association with retinal damage and visual disability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a well-known relationship between MS and damage to the optic nerve, but advanced, quantitative MR imaging methods have not been applied to large cohorts. Our objective was to determine whether a short imaging protocol (< 10 minutes), implemented with standard hardware, could detect abnormal water diffusion in the optic nerves of patients with MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined water diffusion in human optic nerves via DTI in the largest MS cohort reported to date (104 individuals, including 38 optic nerves previously affected by optic neuritis). We also as

Diagnostic Accuracy of Imaging Devices in Glaucoma: An Updated Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Different devices have diverse accuracy in diagnosing glaucoma, and therefore choosing the best device is challenging. Thereby, this study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of imaging devices in glaucoma and explore the need for an updated meta-analysis on this issue. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published between January 2004 and 2022. Cross-sectional or diagnostic studies were selected, and sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and ne

Angioid streaks and optic disc drusen in a patient with congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia.

A man in his 60s with dry eye symptoms was noted to have angioid streaks under the peripapillary retina. Congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia was the major health issue throughout his life, requiring venesection for iron overload, but no transfusions for many years. Close inspection of the eyes with optical coherence tomography also detected small subclinical optic disc drusen, which have not been reported in association with congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia. Together, optic disc drusen and angioid streaks represent an ectopic calcification phenotype in the eye and can be seen in the more

Homonymous Hemiatrophy of Macular Ganglion Cell Layer as a Marker of Retrograde Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis-A Narrative Review.

Retrograde axonal neurodegeneration along the visual pathway-either direct or trans-synaptic-has already been demonstrated in multiple sclerosis (MS), as well as in compressive, vascular, or posttraumatic lesions of the visual pathway. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can noninvasively track macular and optic nerve changes occurring as a result of this phenomenon. Our paper aimed to review the existing literature regarding hemimacular atrophic changes in the ganglion cell layer identified using OCT examination in MS patients without prior history of optic neuritis. Homonymous hemimacular atr

Isolated traumatic optic nerve avulsion in a boy who suffered a horse kick.

We report a case with traumatic avulsion of optic nerve caused by a horse kick in a child that caused loss of vision. Optic nerve avulsion is a rare injury usually associated with maxillofacial structures. Our patient had no light perception in the left eye. The left pupil was dilated and unreactive to light. The left globe was intact. A non-contrast axial computed tomography scan of the orbit demonstrated a widened and altered nerve globe junction with periorbital soft tissue edema. At six month following the injury, subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit showed that the preseptal

Optic disc pit with sectorial retinitis pigmentosa.

Sectorial retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and optic disc pit (ODP) are rare clinical conditions. We present a 40-year-old woman with a history of mild night blindness and decreased vision in the right eye for about 5 years. Fundus examination revealed retinal pigmentary changes in the superior and inferotemporal sectors covering the macula and reduced arterial calibre and ODP at the temporal edge of the optic disc. In addition, fundus autofluorescence, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, and multifocal electroretinogram scans confirmed these clinical findings. Visu
