A case of a gastric small cell carcinoma discovered incidentally by screening ultrasonography is presented. Ultrasonography demonstrated a subcardial metastatic lymph node and multiple hepatic metastatic lesions. Upper GI series and gastroendoscopy revealed a large ulcerated tumor in the cardia of the stomach, and a Borrmann type II tumor, 4 x 2.5 cm, was found in the resected stomach. We describe the radiological findings of the upper GI series, ultrasonography, CT, and gastroendoscopy, and review the literature.

Twenty-five patients with focal splenic disease were analyzed retrospectively to determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) in the detection and analysis of focal splenic lesions. Sonographic and hysteroscopic findings have been evaluated on the basis of specimens obtained from either endometrial biopsy, hysterectomy or operative hysteroscopy. A case of bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys with multiple anomalies is reported. Prenatal ultrasonography showed oligohydramnios, atrial septal defect, bilateral multicystic kidneys, omphalocele, and bowel dilatation. A male baby died of respiratory insufficiency immediately after premature delivery. Autopsy showed multiple anomalies of face, fingers, lung, heart, bowels, and genitourinary tract. Seven more cases with urinary tract anomalies prenatally detected by ultrasonography are also reported. Ultrasonography is useful to diagnose anomalies of fetus.

OBJECTIVE: Anatomic variations have curicial importance during neck surgery. We present a fenestrated internal jugular vein variation and the accessory nerve passing through it. Also, we discuss preoperative diagnosis of this variation using ultrasonography.
METHOD: The possible recognition of this variation by ultrasonography is introduced.
RESULTS: The accessory nerve in an internal jugular vein fenestration can be seen using ultrasonography.
CONCLUSION: Preoperative identification of this rare variation may secure surgeon from potential complications.

Broad ligament pregnancy is a rare event and diagnosis is often late in our setting. Two multiparous women in early thirties presented for routine antenatal care. Routine ultrasonography revealed midtrimester abdominal pregnancies. Broad ligament pregnancy was diagnosed in both cases at laparotomy and both had excision of pregnancy and salpingo-ophorectomy with satisfactory recovery. Ultrasonography is a useful tool in the early diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy in our environment. Routine ultrasonography in pregnancy is advocated in our setting.

We investigated the utility of ultrasonography for assessing facial lipoatrophy changes in HIV-infected adults receiving antiretroviral therapy who participated in a 48-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of rosiglitazone. Ultrasound was performed at weeks 0, 24 and 48 to determine the subcutaneous fat thickness over the malar bone. Changes in facial fat assessed by ultrasonography did not correlate significantly with more established objective measures of lipoatrophy severity. The measurement of malar fat using ultrasonography is not recommended.

The effect of ultrasonographic screening and treatment with a Pavlik harness on the incidence of developmental dislocation of the hip has been studied retrospectively. Observations were made at three different consecutive periods; in the first, clinical screening was carried out, in the second, ultrasonography was added for children up to 3 months of age, and in the third ultrasonography was used within the first few days of birth. A significantly decreased dislocation rate was demonstrated in each group, suggesting that early ultrasonography was of value in the early detection of dislocation.
