Advances in understanding the role and mechanism of the cGAS-STING signaling pathway in ocular diseases.

The cGAS-STING signaling pathway plays a critical role in the immune defense against DNA viruses and in autoimmunity, coordinating a cascade of events that enhance cytokine production, particularly type I interferons. This review summarizes recent advancements in understanding the pathway's impact on various ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis. Activation of this pathway by cytoplasmic DNA from either damaged retinal cells or external pathogens induces inflammatory responses that may accelerate disease progression. Moreover, the …

Extraintestinal Manifestations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: From Pathophysiology to Treatment.

The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are systemic conditions that affect not only the gastrointestinal tract but also other parts of the body. The presence of extraintestinal manifestations can significantly impact the quality of life in IBD patients. Peripheral arthritis, episcleritis, and erythema nodosum are frequently associated with active intestinal inflammation and often improve with standard treatment targeting intestinal inflammation. In contrast, anterior uveitis, ankylosing spondylitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis typically occur independently of disease flares. The inciden…

Case Report on the Effect of AlpaWash® on the Healing of a Post-surgical Wound in a Female Canine Initially Diagnosed with Pyometra.

Pyometra is a common disease in intact female canines characterized by an infection of the uterus. If it is not treated immediately, it could result in various complications such as fistulous tract development, sepsis, hemorrhage, uveitis, conjunctivitis, pyelonephritis, urinary tract infection, and myocarditis. In this case report, we highlight the benefits of the application of a topical ointment on wound healing after ovariohysterectomy in canine Pyometra. Following surgical intervention, the dog developed necrosis in her nipples and lost a portion of her mammary tissues. A large cyst forme…

Neuro-Behcet's syndrome: Case report and literature review.

Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem, autoimmune vasculitis disorder affecting small, medium, and large blood vessels, with poorly understood pathogenesis. It commonly presents with recurrent aphthous ulcers, genital ulcers, skin lesions, and bilateral uveitis. Neurological symptoms are present in less than 10% of cases and develop, on average, 5-6 years after the first non-neurological symptoms. This presentation, known as Neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD), is associated with a worse prognosis of BD. Treatment for NBD is dependent on the severity of symptoms and the presence of other systemic ma…

Targeting Microglia to Treat Degenerative Eye Diseases.

Microglia have been implicated in many degenerative eye disorders, including retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, and retinal detachment. While the exact roles of microglia in these conditions are still being discovered, evidence from animal models suggests that they can modulate the course of disease. In this review, we highlight current strategies to target microglia in the eye and their potential as treatments for both rare and common ocular disorders. These approaches include depleting microglia with chemicals or radiation, reprog…

Systemic Sarcoidosis with Psoriasiform Plaques and Patchy Nonscarring Alopecia.

Cutaneous sarcoidosis occurs in about one-quarter of patients with systemic disease and presents with either specific or nonspecific signs. Psoriasiform sarcoidosis is an uncommon presentation. Herein, study authors report a rare case of systemic sarcoidosis that presented with psoriasiform plaques and patchy alopecia. The main patient complaint was disfigurement from skin lesions over different areas of his body, followed by scalp alopecia and uveitis. These lesions were well-defined plaques, some oozing and others scaly. Dermoscopic examination revealed yellow-orange globular structure. A bi…

[The research progress of cytomegalovirus corneal endotheliitis].

Cytomegalovirus(CMV) corneal endotheliitis is an inflammatory disease of corneal endothelium caused by CMV infection. It mainly occurs in middle-aged and elderly immunocompetent people and has a relatively high incidence in Asia. It is characterized by localized corneal edema, coin-shaped or linear keratic precipitates and mild anterior chamber reaction, possibly with raised intraocular pressure or a history of recurrent anterior uveitis. The pathogenesis of this disease is not yet clear. Previous studies suggested it was related to viral infection and immune response; Therefore, the current t…

The Functional Roles of IL-33/ST2 Axis in Ocular Diseases.

Interleukin-33 (IL-33), an important member of the IL-1 family, plays a pivotal role in regulating immune responses via combining with its receptor suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2). We have already known IL-33/ST2 axis participates in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including liver diseases, renal diseases, and neurological diseases. Recently, emerging studies are indicating that IL-33/ST2 is also involved in a wide range of ocular diseases, such as allergic eye disease, keratitis and corneal regeneration, dry eye disease, uveitis, vitreoretinal diseases, and neuromyelitis optica sp…
