We present a case of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) induced by MRSA after sinus surgery. The patient was a 64-year-old woman who had undergone sinus surgery because of chronic sinusitis. Nine days after the surgery, she began to have sore throat, fever, and diffuse erythroderma followed by severe hypotension and renal dysfunction. Culture of sputum, nasal discharge and stool showed MRSA. Blood culture was negative. She was treated with intravenous fluids, catecholamines and antibiotics (vancomycin and fosfomycin). Continuous hemodiafiltration was started because of oliguria. Her condition improved

We report a case of successful mitral valve replacement performed on the patient who is an infective endocarditis due to MRSA. She was 27-year-old female and treated by antibiotics medication because of remittent fever two years ago. On August 1995, cerebral infarction occurred and she was pointed out endocarditis. After high fever continued, blood cultures demonstrated MRSA. Furthermore, echocardiography showed vegetation on posterior mitral valve leaflet and moderate mitral regurgitation so, mitral valve replacement with a S.J.M. 25 mm performed to control MRSA sepsis condition. During opera

Antibiograms are statistics on bacterial spectrum and resistance rates. It is of importance to regularly monitor the trends in antimicrobial resistance within the institution through the periodic cumulative resistance to provide the effective empiric antibiotic selection, enhanced infection control interventions, and containment strategies. Antimicrobial stewardship interventions improve quality and quantity of prescribing antimicrobial in ICUs without compromising any patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to develop a local unit-specific antibiogram for the Intensive Care Units based on

Recent research has shown that antibiotic-resistant microorganisms are becoming more prevalent in intensive care units (ICUs) at an exponential rate. Patients in the ICU can get infected by pathogens due to invasive operation procedures and critical health conditions. This study primarily emphasized tracheal samples from ICU patients due to their reliance on ventilators, increasing their susceptibility to Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP). Moreover, the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens makes treatment strategies more challenging for these patients. In this study, we tested 200 t

Staphylococcus aureus, a versatile human pathogen, significantly impacts global health causing a broad spectrum of medical conditions that range from minor skin infections to life-threatening diseases. The clinical importance of S. aureus is underscored by its resistance to multiple antibiotics and formation of biofilms, providing protection against antimicrobials and immune responses. To date, the identification of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) S. aureus strains, such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA), requires time-consuming and expensive

Antibiotic resistance is a global threat driven primarily by antibiotic use. We evaluated the effects of antibiotic exposures on the gut microbiomes and resistomes of children at high risk of colonization by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. We performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing of 691 serially collected fecal samples from 80 children (<18 years) undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation. We evaluated the effects of aerobic (cefepime, vancomycin, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, macrolides, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) and anaerobic (piperacillin-tazobactam, carbapenems, metroni

The rampant increase in antibiotic resistance has created a global barrier to the treatment of multidrug-resistant infections. Biogenic synthesis of nanomaterials is a novel approach to producing nanostructures with biological resources. Algae are known to be clean, nontoxic, cost-beneficial, and environmentally acceptable. Chlorella vulgaris is a popular microalga for its broad applications in food, supplements, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In this study, we used Chlorella vulgaris biomass lyophilized powder as our green resource for the biosynthesis ZnONPs. Chlorella vulgaris culture was

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance is critical in informing strategies for infection control in slowing the spread of resistant organisms and for antimicrobial stewardship in the care of patients. However, significant challenges exist in timely and comprehensive AMR surveillance.
METHODS: Using BioFire Pneumonia and Blood Culture 2 Panels data from BioFire Syndromic Trends (Trend), a cloud-based population surveillance network, we described the detection rate of AMR among a US cohort. Data were included from 2019 to 2021 for Gram-positive and -negative organisms and their

Antibiotics are widely used to prevent and treat diseases and promote animal growth in the livestock industry, and therefore antibiotic residues can end up in biogas digestate from processes treating animal manure (AM) and food waste (FW). These digestates represent a potential source of spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) when used as fertilisers. This study evaluated AMR risks associated with biogas digestates from two processes, using AM and FW as substrate, by isolation and identification of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and testing their susceptibility to different antibiotics.

Digestate produced by agricultural biogas plants (BGPs) may contain pathogenic bacteria. Among them, Clostridium perfringens deserves particular attention due to its ability to grow under anaerobic conditions and persist in amended soil. The aim of this study was to examine the potential pathogenicity and the antimicrobial resistance of C. perfringens in manure and digestate collected from three agricultural biogas plants (BGPs). A total of 157 isolates (92 from manure, 65 from digestate) were screened for genes encoding seven toxins (cpa, cpb, etx, iapcpe, netB, and cpb2). The 138 cpa positiv

Staphylococcus aureus is a major foodborne pathogen and commensal of the skin and mucous membranes of animals and humans. Its virulence relies on the production of a variety of toxins resistant to denaturing conditions. Increasing reports of S. aureus food poisoning and contamination of foods of animal origin elsewhere necessitates the investigation of these foods in Cameroon, to implement safety measures. This cross-sectional study evaluated S. aureus contamination in milk and beef in the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon, where cow milk is usually not pasteurized before consumption

BACKGROUND: Intercellular adhesion and biofilm production by Staphylococcus aureus makes these bacteria resistant to antimicrobial therapy. Here, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains were characterized and the prevalence of genes encoding adhesion factors and biofilm formation was determined.
RESULTS: All 248 MRSA isolates identified by cefoxitin disc diffusion were positive for the mecA gene. SCCmec-IV was the most frequently detected genotype (92.7%) and SCCmec-IVa was also very prevalent (84.3%). The quantitative microtiter plate assay showed that all the isolates wer

OBJECTIVES: Enterococcus pRE25 is a conjugative and mobilising multiresistance plasmid from Enterococcus faecalis RE25. pRE25-like enterococcal plasmid pWZ909 mediates the delivery of vancomycin resistance to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus via a Tn1546-like transposon. However, whether pRE25-like elements contribute to multidrug resistance in Staphylococcus spp. has not yet been investigated. Here we describe the first detection of multiresistance pRE25-like elements in the chromosomal DNA of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MDRSP).
METHODS: A total of 46 MDRS…

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolone restriction has been proposed as a control measure for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) outbreaks associated with fluoroquinolone-resistant ribotype 027 strains. However, relatively few reports of fluoroquinolone restriction interventions have evaluated the impact on C. difficile strain types and fluoroquinolone resistance.
METHODS: In a hospital and affiliated long-term care facility (LTCF), antimicrobial stewardship and environmental cleaning interventions were implemented between 2009 and 2018, and C. difficile isolates during this period (~20 per year)

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are an economic burden, and infection control (IC) measures are cost- and labour-intensive. A two-tier IC management strategy was developed, including active screening, in order to achieve effective use of limited resources. Briefly, high-risk patients were differentiated from other patients, distinguished according to type of MDRO, and IC measures were implemented accordingly.
AIM: To evaluate costs and benefits of this IC management strategy.
METHODS: The study period comprised 2.5 years. All high-risk patients underwent microbiological scr

Acquired antibiotic resistances have been reported in lactobacilli of various animal and food sources, but there are no data from wild boar. The objective was a preliminary examination of the antibiotic resistance prevalence of intrinsically vancomycin-resistant lactobacilli isolated from wild boar intestines and analysis of the genetic determinants implicated. Out of three wild boars, 121 lactobacilli were recovered and grouped according to their whole cell protein patterns. Initial phenotypic screening revealed that all were susceptible to erythromycin (2 μg/ml), but 30 were resistant to tet
