We studied the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in dairy calves as part of a routine health check protocol. In addition, data regarding antimicrobial use (AMU), farm hygiene, and farm management were collected in order to identify possible risks for ESBL occurrence. Ten farms participated in the study with a median of 781 milking cows (319-1701). All calves investigated were younger than two weeks with an average age of 6.8 (±3.9) days. The farms were visited and samples were collected twice at an interval of 7-11 months. Faecal samples diluted

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteraemia is a frequent condition, with high mortality rates. There is a growing interest in identifying new therapeutic regimens able to reduce therapeutic failure and mortality observed with the standard of care of beta-lactam monotherapy. In vitro and small-scale studies have found synergy between cloxacillin and fosfomycin against S. aureus. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that cloxacillin plus fosfomycin achieves higher treatment success than cloxacillin alone in patients with MSSA bacteraemia.
METHODS: We will perfor

Acinetobacter species lead to nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients hospitalized in intensive care units or services. Acinetobacter baumannii is a bacterium that is difficult to treat because it is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics and can develop resistance afterwards. This situation limits the use of existing antibiotics and directs the clinician to new agents, different treatment options and the use of various antibiotic combinations. The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivities of doripenem (DOR), tigecycline (TGC), minocycline (MIN), amikacin (AK) and a

Serious urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adults--defined as acute complicated UTIs or pyelonephritis requiring initial intravenous antimicrobials and/or hospitalisation and nosocomial infections--cause significant morbidity and economic burden. In the US, UTIs are responsible for nearly 7 million outpatient physician office visits, 1 million emergency room visits and over 100 000 hospital admissions annually. Complicated UTIs often affect patients with underlying functional, metabolic or anatomical defects of the urinary tract, whereas most nosocomial UTIs (~80%) are related to short- or lon

Cefetamet pivoxil is an orally absorbed prodrug ester of the microbiologically active cephalosporin, cefetamet. The prodrug ester is completely hydrolysed to the active compound cefetamet on its first pass through the gut wall, the liver or both. Cefetamet is classified as a third generation cephalosporin with excellent activity against streptococci, Enterobacteriaceae, Neisseria and Haemophilus species. It has enhanced stability against beta-lactamases compared with penicillins and first and second generation cephalosporins. The antibacterial spectrum is comparable with that of cefotaxime exc

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common cause of hospital-associated pneumonia, bloodstream infection, urinary tract infection, and drainage- or device-related infection. In clinical practice, its significance depends on resistance profile, lineage background, virulence-associated genes, specimen source, and ward context. Local data are useful because national epidemiology may not reflect the isolates recovered through routine work in a single hospital.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 70 non-duplicate clinical K. pneumoniae isolates collected at a tertiary hospital from April to Se

Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with deficiencies in DNA mismatch repair have been studied in the context of chronic infection, where elevated mutational rates ("hypermutation") may facilitate the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance. Whether P. aeruginosa hypermutation can also play an adaptive role in the more dynamic context of acute infection remains unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that evolved mismatch repair deficiencies may be exploited by P. aeruginosa to facilitate rapid acquisition of antimicrobial resistance in acute infection, and we directly document rapid clonal succes

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) have emerged as a major threat worldwide with limited treatment options. The genotypes of ESBL producing strains largely remain unknown in India; hence the present study was aimed to determine the occurrence of ESBLs in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, their molecular types and associated risk factors in a tertiary care hospital.
METHODS: Total 200 consecutive clinical isolates of E. coli (n=143) and K. pneumoniae (n=57) collected between February and July 2006 at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Scien

Ceftriaxone was introduced into clinical practice in the USA in 1985 and was the first extended-spectrum (third-generation) cephalosporin approved for once-daily treatment of patients with Gram-positive or Gram-negative infections. Review of ceftriaxone activity is important given its continued use since the mid-1980s and reports of emerging resistance among all antimicrobial agent classes. We reviewed the activity of ceftriaxone and relevant comparative agents against five Gram-positive and 11 Gram-negative species for a 5-year period, 1996-2000, using data from The Surveillance Network (TSN)

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of thymol in controlling environmental contamination in food processing facilities. The effect of thymol was tested as an agent to prevent planktonic and bacterial biofilm growth of twenty-five Listeria monocytogenes isolates from a variety of foods and five Escherichia coli isolates from a farm. The E. coli isolates were positive for extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes. All isolates and reference strains were susceptible to thymol at Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 250 to 800 μg/mL. An interesting

Analyte isobaric interferences can limit the development of a comprehensive analytical method for the quantitative liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry profiling of an important cohort of veterinary drugs. In this work, a selective chromatographic separation was developed for the analysis of 32 β-lactam antibiotic residues (12 penicillins, 14 cephalosporins, five carbapenems and faropenem) in milk samples. A range of analytical columns with different stationary phases and mobile phases were evaluated for retention and separation of the β-lactam compounds. Results showed that, among t

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have been introduced in the infant immunisation programmes in many countries to reduce the rate of fatal pneumococcal infections. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) a 13-valent vaccine (PCV13) was introduced in 2013. Data on the burden of circulating pneumococci among children after this introduction are lacking. In this study, we aimed to determine the risk factors related to pneumococcal carriage in healthy Congolese children after the vaccine introduction and to assess the antibiotic resistance rates and serotype distribution among

β-lactam antibiotics inhibit bacterial cell wall assembly and, under classical microbiological culture conditions that are generally hypotonic, induce explosive cell death. Here, we show that under more physiological, osmoprotective conditions, for various Gram-positive bacteria, lysis is delayed or abolished, apparently because inhibition of class A penicillin-binding protein leads to a block in autolytic activity. Although these cells still then die by other mechanisms, exogenous lytic enzymes, such as lysozyme, can rescue viability by enabling the escape of cell wall-deficient "L-form" bact

AIMS: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infection has been rapidly emerging as a life-threatening nosocomial disease in many countries. However, studies on the corresponding risk factors of CRKP infection showed inconsistent results. To resolve these inconsistencies, we conducted a meta-analysis of previous studies on the potential risk factors of CRKP infection. The results of this study could be used to develop CRKP infection prevention strategies.
METHODS: Relevant works were systematically searched from five electronic databases up to September 2016. Z-test was used to det

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli is an emerging problem. Compared with urban infants, rural infants may encounter different distributions of community-acquired resistant strains and various barriers to efficient management.
METHODS: A retrospective survey and comparison was conducted for infants with UTI caused by ESBL-producing E. coli admitted to an urban hospital (n = 111) and a rural hospital (n = 48) in southern Taiwan from 2009 to 2012.
RESULTS: Compared with 2009 and 2010, the tota

Treatment of orthopedic infections usually requires prolonged antimicrobial therapy, ranging from 14 days up to 6 months. Nowadays, rising levels of antimicrobial resistance demands parenteral therapy for many patients. Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is a modality that allows treatment out of hospital in these situations. In Brazil, where a public universal healthcare system allows full coverage for all citizens, implantation and dissemination of OPAT programs would be beneficial for patients and for the system, because it would allow a better allocation of health resources

BACKGROUND: Chronic adenoid infection by β-lactam-resistant Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and biofilm formation contribute to adenoid hyperplasia. Middle ear disease consequently remains a critical issue in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of Hib biofilm formation with middle ear effusion with adenoid hyperplasia (MEE-AH) and with pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
METHODS: A total of 384 patients with adenoidectomy from January 2008 to December 2012 were recruited in this investigation. Thirty-two patients (14 female and 18 male;
