Paradoxical abdominal wall movement in bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis.

A 56-year-old man gave a 6-month history of progressive dyspnoea and orthopnoea. During breathing, his abdominal muscles showed paradoxical movement and he rapidly and reproducibly developed difficulty breathing when lying supine. The most likely explanation was severe weakness or paralysis of both hemidiaphragms. This was confirmed with electrophysiology and ultrasonography. Extensive investigation identified no underlying cause, suggesting this is a case of bilateral isolated phrenic neuropathy. We present a video showing how easily bilateral diaphragmatic palsy can be detected clinically th…

Prune-belly syndrome: case series and review of the literature regarding early prenatal diagnosis, epidemiology, genetic factors, treatment, and prognosis.

Prune-belly syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital syndrome characterized by deficient abdominal muscles, urinary tract malformation, and in males, cryptorchidism and has an estimated incidence of 1 in 35,000 to 1 in 50,000 live births. The syndrome might be due to severe bladder outlet obstruction or to abdominal muscle deficiency secondary to a migrational defect of the lateral mesoblast between weeks 6 and 7 of pregnancy. The current review of the medical record reports a special focus on epidemiology, genetic factors, early prenatal diagnosis clusters, treatment, and prognosis of PBS.

[Involvement of the first 2 lumbar roots and paralysis of the abdominal-genital nerves. Clinical and electrical data].

We report two observations of ilio-hypogastric and ilio-inguinal palsy. In both cases, an inguino-scrotal pain occurs just after low back effort. Clinically, we observed an infero-lateral 'pseudo-eventration' and trochantero-inguino-scrotal hypoesthesia in the first patient and an inguino-scrotal hypoesthesia in the second. The EMG recording shows an isolated, severe or total peripheric denervation of the inferior part of lateral abdominal muscles, associated in one case with a partial denervation of the upper lumbar paravertebral muscles. Scan shows L2 radicular asymmetry in the first patient…

Trunk endurance differences between female adolescents with and without idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: This study compared trunk muscle endurance between female adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and non-AIS groups. METHODS: … 001). DISCUSSION: Females with AIS exhibit significantly reduced endurance in both paraspinal and abdominal muscles compared to healthy controls, despite maintaining a similar abdominal-to-paraspinal endurance ratio. The findings suggest the need for trunk muscle endurance evaluation and training in rehabilitation programs for individuals with AIS.

Talk to Patients About: Polio.

Polio once terrified Americans. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the virus crippled around 35,000 Americans a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because polio often attacked abdominal muscles used to breathe, many died or permanently needed a respirator called an iron lung.

Investigation of Trunk and Pelvis Muscle Activity during Sprinting using T2-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

There are few studies that clarify the level of muscle activity in the trunk and pelvis muscles during sprinting. This study aimed to investigate muscle activity in the trunk and pelvis muscles during sprinting using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The pre- and post-test designs were employed by measuring trunk and pelvis muscle activity using T2-weighted MRI before and after 60-m round-trip sprints. Ten male sprinters (N = 10, age, 23.3 ± 6.7 years; body height, 175.1 ± 3.6 cm; body mass, 66.8 ± 4.3 kg; 100-m personal record, 11.18 ± 0.48 s, means ± standard deviations [SDs]) pe

Axial myoclonus mediated by the propriospinal tract: a case report.

We describe a patient with axial myoclonus. Myoclonus first occurred in the upper abdominal muscle and spread up to the neck muscle and down to the lower abdominal muscle. Physiological studies of the jerks revealed that the myoclonus arose in the thoracic spinal cord and spread slowly up and down the spinal cord at about 3 m/s. We conclude that the myoclonus is mediated by the propriospinal tract.

Abdominal Pseudohernia Caused by Zoster Sine Herpete.

Abdominal pseudohernia is a rare clinical condition characterized by an abnormal bulging of the abdominal wall. We present a 56-year-old male patient diagnosed with abdominal pseudohernia caused by zoster sine herpete (ZSH). The patient initially presented with a right abdominal wall bulging at the Th10 dermatome area. The patient did not experience any pain or rash at the site, and the ultrasonography (US) did not reveal any tumor or hernia. Computed tomography (CT) was taken in another hospital, but it failed to provide a diagnosis. During the second visit, we performed standing ultrasonogra

An unusual abdominal wall mass in a child.

Abdominal tumors are one of the most common types of pediatric cancer. Therefore, they should always be included in the differential diagnosis of abdominal masses. Here, we present the case of a child whose initial hypothesis of diagnosis contemplated this possibility. Later, it was demonstrated that the abdominal mass found was secondary to a common parasitosis. A 2-year old, moderately malnourished and pale white boy was referred with a history of a rapidly growing, well-limited, middle abdominal mass. The mass was 10 by 3 cm, hard and poorly movable, apparently involving both abdominal rect

Gut-Brain Hydraulics: Brain motion and CSF circulation is driven by mechanical coupling with the abdomen.

The brain moves within the skull, but the drivers and function of this motion are not understood. We visualized brain motion relative to the skull in awake head-fixed mice using high-speed, multi-plane two-photon microscopy. Brain motion was primarily rostrally and laterally directed, and was tightly correlated with locomotion, but not with respiration or the cardiac cycle. Electromyography recordings in abdominal muscles and microCT reconstructions of the trunk and spinal vasculature showed that brain motion was driven by abdominal muscle contractions that activate a hydraulic-like vascular c…

Current Uses of Ultrasound Imaging in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation.

The term Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) refers to the use of ultrasound imaging by physiothera-pists. Ultrasound is used by physiotherapists to evaluate the morphology of muscles and other associated soft tissues not only at rest but also for a dynamic assessment of those structures during physical activities and tasks. RUSI is most commonly utilized as part of a biofeedback mechanism, which shows good efficacy in lower back pain treatment. Several possibilities have been also described for clinically adapting this method in the rehabilitation of the shoulder and knee and postoperati

Lower abdominal wall reconstruction using the anterior thigh fasciocutaneous flap.

Full thickness defects of the lower abdominal wall are uncommon. They can occur in congenital abdominal wall defects, acute trauma and following resection of soft tissue tumours. In reconstruction of defects not amenable to primary closure, three problems need to be addressed: (i) the fascial layer needs to be reconstructed; (ii) stable and sensate skin coverage is needed as the lower abdominal waistline area is subject to pressure; (iii) it is desirable to restore the contour of the abdominal wall. We present a case with a large area of radiation dermatitis and recurrence of a malignant ovari

[Anatomical study of the ramification and intramuscular distribution of the intercostal nerves in man].

Minute dissection was performed on the ventral primary rami of the thoracic and the first lumbar nerves in the left half of an adult male cadaver in order to obtain more detailed data of the nerve supply to the muscles of the thorax and abdomen. The ribs, costal cartilages, sternum and vertebral column were removed to facilitate dissection. The origin, course and intramuscular distribution of the muscular branches of each nerve were examined in precise detail. The main findings are as follows: 1. The intercostal nerves The collateral branches were found in approximately 1/3 of the segments exa

Electrical Stimulation of Back Muscles Does Not Prime the Corticospinal Pathway.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether peripheral electrical stimulation (PES) of back extensor muscles changes excitability of the corticospinal pathway of the stimulated muscle and synergist trunk muscles. METHODS: In 12 volunteers with no history of low back pain (LBP), intramuscular fine-wire electrodes recorded electromyography (EMG) from the deep multifidus (DM) and longissimus muscles. Surface electrodes recorded general EMG from the erector spinae and abdominal muscles. Single- and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigms tested corticospinal excitability, short-inte…

Unilateral anomalous lateral branch of the abdominal aorta piercing the left renal vein - A case report.

A sound knowledge of variations in the branching pattern of the abdominal aorta is crucial for operative, diagnostic, and endovascular procedures. We report a unilateral anomalous lateral branch of the abdominal aorta observed during dissection classes. This anomalous branch took origin from the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta behind the left renal vein and pierced the left renal vein. After piercing the left renal vein, it traced a tortuous course through the peri-renal fat pad in front of the lower part of the left kidney. The artery then ran downward and laterally, pierced the anteri

Cold abscess of the anterior abdominal wall: an unusual primary presentation.

Tuberculosis is considered as ubiquitous disease as it involves any organ, but primary involvement of abdominal muscles is very rare. In most cases, the muscle involvement is secondary and is caused by either hematogenous route or direct inoculation from a tuberculous abdominal lymph node or extension from underlying tubercular synovitis and osteomyelitis. Autopsy studies have shown abdominal wall involvement in less than 1% of patients who died of tuberculosis. Antitubercular therapy is main form of management. Surgical intervention is always secondary in the form of either sonography or comp…
