Physical examination, bone densitometry and x-ray are the mainstay in the evaluation of osteoporosis. A limited number of simple blood tests are sufficient to discriminate most secondary forms of osteoporosis and to exclude osteomalacia. Bone-specific biochemical markers play an increasing role in monitoring osteoporosis therapy. They may also play a role in treatment decision in the coming years. Bone biopsies are helpful if findings are unclear or inconsistent. The present review gives a summary of the opportunities and limitations of the above diagnostic procedures.

One hundred and thirteen knees with osteoarthritis (OA) were studied to assess the distribution of bone mineral density (BMD) in the proximal tibia and the potential relation between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis in evaluating hip BMD. All patients had severe knee pain and were diagnosed with Kellgren and Lawrence grade IV osteoarthritis. According to the magnitude of the axial deformity, four categories were created: varus>10 degrees ( 28.3%), varus 4-10 degrees (38.9%), aligned 180 +/- 3 degrees (13.3%), and valgus>4 degrees (19.5%). For each category, the medial and lateral proximal tibia

OBJECTIVES: Osteoporosis is a complication of coeliac disease. A gluten-free diet improves but does not normalize bone mineral density in adult patients. Only limited data are available regarding the influence of the disease and diet on bone mineralization in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radial bone mineral content and density in children and adolescents who are asymptomatic on a gluten-free diet.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) values of the non-dominant radius midshaft in 91 children (53 girls, 38 boys, mean age 11.7 years, mean

The evaluation of bone by ultrasound is a new, transportable and non-irradiating method. It measures attenuation of ultrasound (BUA), as well as velocity (SOS) of ultrasound in a given tissue. For the measurement of bone, the most frequently used bone is the calcaneus. We have used this technique (Achilles, Lunar) to evaluate the reproducibility of measurements in healthy volunteers and to determine the correlations between the results of ultrasound measurements and those of conventional densitometry (DXA) in a population of postmenopausal females who consulted for screening or diagnosis of os

The relationship between past fractures and current bone density (BMD) was analyzed in a population sample of 3222 women aged 48-58. BMD was determined with dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the spine and femoral neck. 702 women reported fractures. Wrist and ankle were the most common fracture sites. Fracture history increased the risk [OR (95% CI)] of low spinal BMD (of more than 1 SD below the study population mean) by 1.75 (1.41; 2.18). The sensitivity and specificity of fracture history to detect a low spinal BMD were 31 and 80%, respectively. One SD decreases of spinal and femoral BMD eq

We emphasize the opportunity of an in vivo bone mass measurement with an easy and accurate technique for orthopedic practice. At the present time, Dual Energy X Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is the most used technique, and is a safe and short examination. It can assess the quantity of mineral of any region of the body with a remarkable reproducibility (1 to 3 per cent). New machines are improved, and they permit many practical applications beyond the osteoporosis field. Thus, in orthopedics, we can distinguish several interesting topics. Peripheral risk of fracture can be evaluated because of good

Bone mineral content and soft tissue (lean and fat) mass in living female cynomolgus monkeys were successfully measured with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA; DPX-alpha, LUNARE, USA). Measurements were performed using a restraining bed made of forming polystyrol with 5cm thickness to support the animal in a supine position. Accuracy of measurements was checked by using a dummy consisted by various combinations of lean, lard and ribs. The results confirmed that this system is able to measure each constituent exactly. The percentage of fat in the soft tissue is seemed to be better index

Deficits in bone mineral have been widely reported in Turner syndrome. The bone mineral status of 19 adolescents with Turner syndrome (16 receiving GH therapy) was evaluated by dual photon absorptiometry of the lumbar spine and whole body and compared with a normal female control group (n = 45) with the same mean age (14.3 yr). The conventional measurements of bone mass, bone mineral content (BMC = g), and bone mineral density (BMD = g/cm2), as well as bone mineral apparent density (BMAD = g/cm3), an expression of bone mineral adjusted for bone volume, were determined for both sites. Although

The precise site of bone loss was evaluated in early postmenopausal women using high resolution computed tomographic (CT) images of forearm measurements. A procedure was devised to quantitate trabecular and subcortical bone density of the distal radius, cortical bone density of the diaphyseal radius, and cortical wall thickness at both measuring sites. Twenty women (mean age 52 years, time since menopause 1 to 4 years) were examined twice at one-year intervals to determine the yearly change of the above mentioned bone parameters. Trabecular bone and subcortical bone showed the same density red

Cross-sectional studies suggest that premature birth and low birth weight may both be associated with low peak bone mass. We followed bone traits in preterm individuals and controls for 27 years and examined the effects of birth weight relative to gestational age [stratified as small for gestational age (SGA) or appropriate for gestational (AGA)] on adult bone mineral density (BMD). We measured distal forearm BMC (g/cm) and BMD (g/cm(2)) with single-photon absorptiometry (SPA) in 46 preterm children (31 AGA and 15 SGA) at mean age 10.1 years (range 4-16) and in 84 healthy age-matched children.

A fracture in childhood is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD), but it is debated whether a fracture at growth also predicts low BMD in young adulthood. The purpose of this work was to gender-specifically evaluate whether children with a fracture are at increased risk of low BMD in young adulthood. Distal forearm BMD (g/cm2) was measured with single-photon absorptiometry (SPA) in 47 boys and 26 girls (mean age 10 years, range 3-16 years) with an index fracture and in 41 boys and 43 girls (mean age 10 years, range 4-16 years) with no fracture. BMD was re-measured mean 27 years later

BACKGROUND: Although the short-term benefits of mineral supplementation in preterm infants has been established, the long-term benefits are less clear. The purpose of the study was to evaluate effects of early-life mineral, vitamin D, and breast milk intake on bone mineral status in children 9 to 11 years of age who were born prematurely.
METHODS: Seventy preterm infants born 1985 through 1987 were randomized into four groups: to receive a vitamin D dose of 500 or 1000 IU/day and calcium- and phosphorus-supplemented or unsupplemented breast milk. At 3 months of age, radial bone mineral conten

The relationship between total body calcium (TBC) and local bone calcium mass (BCM) was studied in a group of osteoporotic patients (12 females and two males) with a wide range of body size. Two methods were used to estimate BCM: photon absorptiometry and radiographic morphometry. TBC was estimated by total-body neutron-activation analysis. Since 99 percent of TBC is located in the skeleton, it was assumed that TBC was essentially a measure of total skeletal (calcium) mass. TBC ranged from 482 to 1076 g. High correlations with r values from 0.84 to 0.94, p less than 0.001, were found between T

Multidirectional sports such as handball may provide beneficial mechanical stimuli, but longitudinal evidence in male children remains limited. This study examined one-year differences in bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone area (BA) between male children engaged in regular handball practice and age-matched controls. This non-randomized longitudinal study included 72 healthy male children aged 10-12 years: handball group (HG, n = 36) and control group (CG, n = 36). Whole-body and regional bone outcomes were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Between-g

The assessment of body composition has long been a fundamental component of research and is gaining increasing adoption in clinical practice. This growing interest has drawn new professionals to the field and increased emphasis on its clinical relevance and applications. However, the diversity of assessment techniques and inconsistent terminology create challenges, highlighting the urgent need for harmonized approaches across research and healthcare settings. Commonly employed methods include bioelectrical impedance approaches, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and computerized tomography, wit

BACKGROUND: As far as we are aware, the influence of Cross-Fit training on bone health indicators in young men has not yet been examined. Therefore, the primary objective of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to assess the effects of a one-year Cross-Fit training intervention on various bone-related outcomes including bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), femoral neck geometry, and composite indices of femoral neck strength in a cohort of physically inactive young males.
METHODS: Forty healthy but inactive young men were initially recruited for the study, of whom 26

BACKGROUND: Bone responds to loading by accruing areal bone mineral density (BMD). Distance runners experience a ground reaction force (GRF) during exercise which contributes to bone loading. Sex differences in BMD reflect that males and females respond differently to running-imposed GRF.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the relationship between GRF and BMD in male and female runners?
METHODS: Forty participants (20 male; age=25.1 ± 4.5 years; height=1.7 ± 0.1 m; mass=67.2 ± 11.5 kg) who routinely participated in distance running (44.0 ± 26.1 km/week over 4.5 ± 1.5 weekly sessions for the past 6.9

Sarcopenia is characterized by a degeneration of muscle mass and strength, which impairs mobility and causes fragility in older adults. Modern assessment technologies include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and ultrasound (US). Despite the tremendous efforts made in the past to investigate the correlations among measurement parameters of these technologies, inconsistencies in the reported correlations persist, and there is no existing review article considering all these technologies for
