The fate of salicylate in the plasma of rats was followed after nasal, intravenous, and oral administration of 2.0-mg doses of aspirin. Aspirin was well absorbed following nasal administration of a neutralized, nonirritating solution containing triethanolamine. The rate of absorption was slower than that of other nasally administered drugs, such as propranolol or progesterone. The bioavailability of aspirin following nasal administration was 100%, whereas the oral bioavailability was only 58.8% at the dose studied.

In a double-blind study using the hydrogen breath-excretion test to identify lactase status, we found 45% of absorbers in a group of 64 patients with senile cataracts compared with 71% of absorbers in the control group. The incidence and degree of incomplete lactose absorption was investigated in breast fed infants and children up to two years of age during acute gastroenteritis (GE). Lactose absorption was assessed in 50 patients by means of the hydrogen breath test (HBT), approximately 5.5 days after the admission to hospital. The rate of absorption of 14C-thiamin added to sorghum beer has been studied in isolated loops of rat duodenum and adjacent jejunum. Appreciable amounts of the vitamin were absorbed in spite of the presence in the beer of alcohol and live yeast cells avid for the vitamin. These results suggest that commercially brewed sorghum beer, a beverage consumed widely by Third World populations, can be fortified with thiamin to prevent the development of deficiency of the vitamin in habitual consumers of the beer.
