Psychiatric care in restricted conditions for work migrants, refugees and asylum seekers: experience of the Open Clinic for Work Migrants and Refugees, Israel 2006.

In the last few decades, the State of Israel has become a target for work migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and victims of human trafficking, as part of the trend of world immigration. Immigration is a process of loss and change with significant socio-psychological stress, with possible effects on the immigrants' mental health. The Physicians for Human Rights - Israel (PHR) Association operates a psychiatric clinic as part of the Open Clinic for Work Migrants and Refugees. This article will present major clinical issues regarding psychiatry and immigration in Israel according to the data coll

Factors Associated with Hepatitis B Knowledge Among Vietnamese Americans: A Population-Based Survey.

Vietnamese Americans have high rates of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection but low rates of knowledge and screening. A population-based survey conducted in 2011 of Vietnamese Americans in two geographic areas (n = 1666) was analyzed. The outcome variables were having heard of HBV and a score summarizing knowledge of HBV transmission. Most respondents (86.0%) had heard of HBV. Correct knowledge of transmission ranged from 59.5% for sex, 68.1% for sharing toothbrushes, 78.6% for during birth, and 85.0% for sharing needles. In multivariable analyses, factors associated with having heard of HBV and

Preventing HIV, eliminating disparities among Hispanics in the United States.

HIV/AIDS has disproportionately impacted Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. This literature review focuses on the disparities that exist in the impact of HIV/AIDS across Hispanic subgroups. Elimination of these disparities requires attention to underlying biological, behavioral and psychological, social and cultural, and economic and structural factors. Attention to factors within these domains has important implications for the reduction of other health-related disparities that exist across Hispanic/Latino subgroups in the United States.

Emergency contraceptive pills: an exploratory study of knowledge and perceptions among Mexican women from both sides of the border.

A focus group study was conducted to explore what Mexican women from both sides of the US-Mexican border do to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, including their use of emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs); to examine their knowledge and perceptions of ECPs; and to explore what might influence Mexican women's use of ECPs. Eight focus groups (four in Mexico and four in California) were conducted with 55 sexually active Mexican women age 18 to 34. The women discussed a variety of postcoital methods intended to prevent pregnancy including herbs and injections. Although a third of th

Psychological distress and associated stressors with proposed stress reduction model for Chinese international postgraduate students in Malaysia: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been an exponential rise in students inbound to Malaysia to pursue their postgraduate studies. In particular, Chinese international postgraduate students (CIPS) represent a rapidly growing student population in this country, which is postulated to lead to substantial psychological distress resulting from academic, cultural, and financial adjustments that are required of the students immersing themselves in a new environment. Nevertheless, quantitative evidence regarding depression, anxiety, and stress among CIPS in Malaysian public universities remains

Loneliness and social isolation amongst refugees resettled in high-income countries: A systematic review.

Refugees encounter multiple psychosocial stressors post-resettlement which increases their risk of developing a mental illness. Loneliness and social isolation are commonly reported in the refugee population and have been demonstrated to be associated with multiple physical and mental health comorbidities in the general population. However, no study to date has systematically reviewed how loneliness and social isolation may affect refugees who have resettled in high-income countries. This systematic review aims to study the prevalence, risk factors, consequences, and interventions for loneline

Orang Asli Health and Lifeways Project (OA HeLP): a cross-sectional cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Non-communicable disease (NCD) risk is influenced by environmental factors that are highly variable worldwide, yet prior research has focused mainly on high-income countries where most people are exposed to relatively homogeneous and static environments. Understanding the scope and complexity of environmental influences on NCD risk around the globe requires more data from people living in diverse and changing environments. Our project will investigate the prevalence and environmental causes of NCDs among the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, known collectively as the Ora

The prevalence of the gout-associated polymorphism rs2231142 G>T in ABCG2 in a pregnant female Filipino cohort.

Gout is a metabolic disorder and one of the most common arthritic conditions. Hyperuricemia is the hallmark of developing gout and mostly caused by uric acid underexcretion. Gout disproportionately affects people of specific races and ethnicities. Filipinos are the second-largest Asian population in the USA and reported to have a higher prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia than non-Filipino counterparts and Filipinos residing in the Philippines. The genetic polymorphism rs2231142 G>T in the ABCG2 has been strongly associated with hyperuricemia and gout across multiple populations. However, the

The Role of Adverse Childhood Experiences in the Suicidal Outcomes of Migrants With a Suicide Attempt in Spain.

Suicide rates have increased notably in Spain, particularly among the migrant population, where mortality by suicide rose by 25% between 2018 and 2021. Migrants are exposed to cumulative stressors, including socioeconomic adversity, acculturative challenges, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that may heighten the risk of suicidal behavior. This study aimed to examine and compare the risk factors associated with suicide attempts among foreign-born and native-born individuals in Spain, with particular emphasis on the role of ACEs. A sample of 754 patients assessed 15 days after a suicide

Opioid use, prescribing and fatal overdose patterns among racial/ethnic minorities in the United States: A scoping review and conceptual risk environment model.

ISSUES: To date, there has been no synthesis of research addressing the scale and nuances of the opioid epidemic in racial/ethnic minority populations in the United States that considers the independent and joint impacts of dynamics such as structural disadvantage, provider bias, health literacy, cultural norms and various other risk factors. APPROACH: Using the "risk environment" framework, we conducted a scoping review on PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar of peer-reviewed literature and governmental reports published between January 2000 and February 2024 on the nature and scale of opioid u

Cultural adaptation of a brief motivational intervention for heavy drinking among Hispanics in a medical setting.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics, particularly men of Mexican origin, are more likely to engage in heavy drinking and experience alcohol-related problems, but less likely to obtain treatment for alcohol problems than non-Hispanic men. Our previous research indicates that heavy-drinking Hispanics who received a brief motivational intervention (BMI) were significantly more likely than Hispanics receiving standard care to reduce subsequent alcohol use. Among Hispanics who drink heavily the BMI effectively reduced alcohol use but did not impact alcohol-related problems or treatment utilization. We hypothesiz

Psychological distress is associated with inadequate dietary intake in Vietnamese marriage immigrant women in Korea.

Previous studies have reported that the nutritional status of Vietnamese female marriage immigrants in Korea is inadequate. And the mediation of acculturation stress can contribute to problems in their eating practices and dietary intakes. This study examines an association between psychological distress and inadequate dietary intake in Vietnamese female marriage immigrants living in Korea. A cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data (n=570) from the Cohort of Intermarried Women in Korea. HIV risk behaviours among immigrant and ethnic minority gay and bisexual men in North America and Europe: A systematic review.

HIV surveillance systems show that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV in North American and European countries. Within the MSM category, HIV prevalence is often elevated among ethnic minority (i.e., Latino, Asian, and Black) MSM, many of whom are also foreign-born immigrants. Little research has focused specifically on foreign-born populations, though studies that provide data on the nativity of their samples offer an opportunity to investigate the potential role of transnational migration in informing HIV risk among ethnic minority M

High prevalence of metabolic syndrome in young Hispanic women: findings from the national Sister to Sister campaign.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population and have a higher prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors as compared with non-Hispanic whites. Further data suggests that Hispanics have undiagnosed complications of metabolic syndrome, namely diabetes mellitus, at an earlier age. We sought to better understand the epidemiology of metabolic syndrome in Hispanic women using data from a large, community-based health screening program. METHODS: Using data from the Sister to Sister: The Women's Heart Health Foundation community health fairs from 2008 to 2009 held in

Alcohol consumption patterns among Mexican American mothers and among children from single- and dual-headed households: findings from HHANES 1982-84.

Data from the southwestern United States sample of the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were employed to compare the patterns of alcohol use among Mexican American mothers and children in female-headed households with use patterns among mothers and children in couple-headed households. Single female heads of household drank more alcoholic beverages on more days than females from dual-headed households. As a whole, the children of single heads of household still living at home did not demonstrate significantly different drinking patterns from their dual-headed household counterp
