In the present study, we examined the effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a glutamate-modulating agent, on marble-burying behavior in mice. Fluvoxamine (30 mg/kg, p.o.) and mirtazapine (3 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly inhibited marble-burying behavior without affecting locomotor activity. Several pathologic conditions are known to cause thiamine deficiency, which induce energy shortages in all tissues, due to impairment of pyruvate decarboxylation. Brain is particularly susceptible to these conditions due to its high rate of glucose to pyruvate-driven energy metabolism. However, cellular compartmentalization of a key energy metabolite, acetyl-CoA, in this pathology remains unknown. Pyrithiamine-evoked thiamine deficiency caused no significant alteration in pyruvate dehydrogenase and 30% inhibition of α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase activities in rat whole forebrain mitochondria.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a treatment for childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) has historically only been successful in early disease. The urine of a patient with an ileal neobladder was collected during the first 7 days postoperatively and stored in a refrigerator. After precipitation, the urine was decanted.
