Resolving conflict realistically in today's health care environment.

Conflict is a natural part of human interaction, and when properly addressed, results in improved interpersonal relationships and positive organizational culture. Unchecked conflict may escalate to verbal and physical violence. Conflict that is unresolved creates barriers for people, teams, organizational growth, and productivity, leading to cultural disintegration within the establishment. By relying on interdependence and professional collaboration, all parties involved grow and, in turn, benefit the organization and population served. When used in a constructive manner, conflict resolution

Dissociation, somatization, and affect dysregulation: the complexity of adaptation of trauma.

OBJECTIVE: A century of clinical research has noted a range of trauma-related psychological problems that are not captured in the DSM-IV framework of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigated the relationships between exposure to extreme stress, the emergence of PTSD, and symptoms traditionally associated with "hysteria," which can be understood as problems with stimulus discrimination, self-regulation, and cognitive integration of experience. METHOD: The DSM-IV field trial for PTSD studied 395 traumatized treatment-seeking subjects and 125 non-treatment-seeking subjects w

Coping styles and strategies: a comparison of adolescent students with and without learning disabilities.

In this study, the authors compared the results of a coping measure completed by 98 seventh through ninth grade students who were assessed as having learning disabilities with published means from the general Australian student population. The Adolescent Coping Scale was the measure used. The results suggested higher use by students aged 12 to 13 years who had learning disabilities of an overall nonproductive coping style and in particular of the nonproductive strategies of ignoring the problem and not coping. Although there was no difference in overall productive or nonproductive coping style

Individual factors as predictors of secondary traumatic stress and burnout in forensic inpatient staff.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT: Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is the indirect traumatisation of a person through the stress of helping or knowing about other's trauma. Burnout is gradual exhaustion in response to long-term work-related stress. Both have negative psychological, physiological and/or organisational consequences; however, the existing research in forensic health care professionals (FHCPs) is limited. One study explored STS in FCHPs and found that lower psychological flexibility (ability to adapt) was a predictor of greater STS. Existing research on burnout in FHCPs suggests that

Study protocol of a pilot randomised controlled trial examining massed culturally adapted Problem Management Plus (PM +) in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Problem Management Plus (PM +) is a low-intensity psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization to reduce psychological distress, particularly in settings with limited access to mental health care. To date, PM + has not been culturally adapted for the Xhosa community in South Africa, nor has it been evaluated in a massed format (five daily sessions delivered within 1 week). This study aims to culturally adapt PM + for the Xhosa context and to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a massed delivery format. METHODS: The study will be conducted in three

Emotional functions in transsexuals after the first step in physical transformation.

Transsexuals have to face multiple medical, social and bureaucratic problems. These problems are not only encountered before the transformation, but also during and after medical procedures. In the search for improvement of transsexual individuals' quality of life during therapy, it seems desirable to supplement hormonal treatments with psychological explorations. This study was conducted with the aim of defining emotional conditions and included 28 transsexual female-to-male (F/M) patients and two gender-divided control groups (males and females) of similar age. The following psychometric sca

Mental health and multimorbidity: psychosocial adjustment as an important process for quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity (the co-occurrence of two or more chronic diseases) can be seen as a prototypical situation in which psychosocial adjustment is required. Even though most patients adapt successfully, a significant number of individuals show adaptation problems and develop additional mental health problems. OBJECTIVE: For this reason, this article focuses on the importance of psychosocial adaptation as a core process in the context of quality of life. RESULTS: Important findings pointing at the association between multimorbidity and mental health are summarized, and the stress-resp

Ruminative coping and post-event processing in social anxiety.

Cognitive models of social anxiety implicate various factors in the initiation and maintenance of socially anxious states, including anticipatory processing, self-focused attention and post-event processing. The present study focused on post-event processing, which is a post-mortem analysis following a social event that is described as ruminative in nature and serves to maintain social anxiety. Participants (N=112; 64 women, 48 men) were presented with vignettes that involved making mistakes in public and were instructed to record their thoughts to allow for the examination of the content of p

Exploring the interplay of discrimination perception, alexithymia, and shyness among hearing-impaired college students: a network approach.

BACKGROUND: Hearing-impaired college students face limitations in auditory and verbal communication, placing them at higher risk for mental health problems. While previous studies have mostly used traditional structural equation models to examine the relationship between discrimination perception and psychological adaptation issues, these approaches have difficulty capturing complex nonlinear associations and dynamic interactions between variables. This study adopted a network analysis perspective to explore the association patterns between discrimination perception, shyness, and alexithymia a
