Clinicopathologic implications of Myb and Beta-catenin expression in adenoid cystic carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the second most common malignancy of the salivary glands, accounting for ~ 1% of malignant tumors of the head and neck region and 10% of salivary gland neoplasms. Predicting the long-term outcomes of patients with ACC is still challenging, as reliable prognostic biomarkers are not available. Among salivary gland tumors, Myb overexpression is highly specific for ACC. In addition, the MYB-NF1B fusion translocation is a hallmark of ACC, and although the detection of this translocation does not appear to impact prognosis, the MYB-NF1B fusion is also im

[Results of surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands].

Surgical treatment in patients with rare adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands is considered to be the state of the art. With respect to an additional radiotherapy there are different approaches regarding the type of radiotherapy and timing. In this study the overall survival and recurrence-free survival in 52 individuals with salivary gland ACC who were treated at the University Hospital in Essen and received irradiation with fast neutrons and photons (mixed beam technique) either A) immediately following surgical treatment or B) only after the appearance of local recurrence w

Unusual Presentations of Primary and Metastatic Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Involving the Skin.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is most commonly seen in the salivary glands but may occur at other sites. Primary or metastatic involvement of the skin is unusual. We report 2 cases of ACC with unusual presentation. In the first case, a 55-year-old woman presented with a cutaneous lesion on the right shin, and final pathology showed ACC. An extracutaneous origin was excluded by clinical and imaging studies. In the second case, a 49-year-old woman presented with a nodule on the breast, and biopsy confirmed high-grade ACC (>30% solid areas). She underwent lumpectomy and subsequent mastectomy aft

The incidence of mTOR marker in tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma by immunohistochemical staining.

INTRODUCTION: There is an association between the activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and aggressive tumor growth in multiple forms of cancer, including adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). ACCs are uncommon yet a malignant form of neoplasms that arises within the secretory glands. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the increase of mTOR in the ACC tumors in order to survey the possibility of treating these tumors with mTOR inhibitors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples from known cases of the lung and tracheal ACC were retrievedfrom the archives of the pa-tholog

When a stuffy nose won't go away: Rhabdomyosarcoma masquerading as adenoiditis.

Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal proliferation of immature skeletal muscle and may arise in children in the orbit, middle ear, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, or nasopharynx. Clinical diagnosis may be difficult in a subset of patients who have no significant deformities or irregularities upon visual inspection of the oropharynx. Rhabdomyosarcoma in this setting may be mistaken for a more common underlying etiology such as an upper respiratory infection. We report a case of a 7-year-old male with embryonal variant rhabdomyosarcoma previously misdiagnosed by 3 different phy

Adenoid Obstruction Assessment in Children: Clinical Evaluation Versus Endoscopy and Radiography.

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophy of the adenoids is common in children. However, the anatomical site makes the adenoids difficult to assess, and studies evaluating the subject are ambiguous, especially with regard to the use of X-ray as an evaluation tool. OBJECTIVES: To compare medical history with clinical, radiological, and endoscopic evaluations of the adenoids and compare obstructed and non-obstructed children relative to the assessment methods. METHODS: A prospective comparative study was conducted with children who were suspected of having enlarged adenoids. All parents completed a medical his…

[Treatment plan and prognosis of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma with lung metastasis].

Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is a common malignant tumor in the oral and maxillofacial region and accounts for approximately 3%-5% of all head and neck carcinomas. SACC always occurs in the palatal salivary gland and parotid gland. The tumor has the characteristics of strong invasion, perineural invasion, high hematogenous metastasis, and low lymph node metastasis rate. The biological characteristics of SACC determine the specificity of clinical treatment. Thus far, few clinical trials have investigated the efficacy of systemic therapy owing to the rarity of SACC with lung metastas

The effect of adenoid hypertrophy on hearing thresholds in children with otitis media with effusion.

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media with effusion is common middle ear mucosa disease that can cause hearing loss in children. Adenoid hypertrophy can cause recurrent acute otitis media in addition to otitis media with effusion as a result of eustachian tube dysfunction and primary infection focus. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adenoid hypertrophy on the hearing threshold in children suffering from otitis media with effusion. METHODS: Children of school age with otitis media with effusion were included in the study. The size and location of the adenoid tissue were determined b

Pathology of Primary Tracheobronchial Malignancies Other than Adenoid Cystic Carcinomas.

Most primary tracheal tumors are malignant. Malignancy of larynx and bronchi are much more likely than trachea. Tracheal tumors are most likely due to direct extension for surrounding tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma make up about two-thirds of adult primary tracheal tumors. Because of their predominantly local growth pattern, malignant salivary gland-type tumors show a better outcome than other histologic types.

The relationship between adenoid hypertrophy and gastroesophageal reflux disease: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is believed to be associated with various manifestations in the otorhinolaryngology and has been found to be an additional risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy, but the causal relation between them is under controversial. We thus performed a meta-analysis to grade the strength of evidence and systematically explore whether adenoid hypertrophy correlates with GERD in the literature. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using Medline via PubMed, Embase, CNKI, and Web of Science. Studies reporting the adenoid hypertrophy and GERD

Rare breast metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland.

Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) are rare malignant neoplasms of exocrine glands, most commonly found in salivary glands. This report describes a 67-year-old woman with metastatic ACC to the breast, only the third reported case of its kind. The salivary gland ACC was first diagnosed 5 years prior. Routine mammogram identified a Breast Imaging and Reporting Systems (BIRADS) 4 lesion. Core breast biopsy demonstrated findings consistent with metastatic ACC to the breast. The patient ultimately underwent local excision but suffered a recurrence of disease less than 2 months later despite chemother

Patterns of adenoid and tonsil growth in Japanese children and adolescents: A longitudinal study.

Lymphoid tissues, such as adenoids (Ad) and tonsils (Tn), are suggested to undergo hypertrophy during childhood and involution in adulthood. Enlargement of Ad and Tn can cause transient obstruction of the respiratory airways, thus inducing obstructive sleep apnoea. To date, the standard Ad and Tn sizes have not been reported, and there are no explicit objective criteria for evaluating their sizes or deducing whether they have enlarged, reduced, or remained constant over time. Our previous cross-sectional study revealed the age-dependent airway occupation ratio of Ad and Tn in Japanese individu…

Rare imaging appearance of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: A case report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is a rare tumor comprising <0.1% of all breast malignancies. The present study reports the case of a 66-year-old woman who underwent multiple imaging techniques, including mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient reported gradual enlargement of a mass in the left breast. Mammography identified a high-density, irregular mass, with nipple retraction. Ultrasonography revealed an irregular, complex cystic and solid mass with an unclear margin in the subareolar region. The internal vascularity was seen on Doppler exa

Sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma: a population-based analysis of 694 cases.

BACKGROUND: Currently, limited literature exists about sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma (SNACC). In this study, we analyze the demographics, survival, and treatment efficacy of this rare entity. METHODS: Our study was a retrospective population-based analysis of SNACC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database assessing the 40-year time-frame of 1973 to 2013. RESULTS: Six hundred ninety-four SNACC patients were identified; 53.2% were female and 46.8% were male. Caucasians were most commonly affected (77.1%). SNACC most often arose from the maxillary sinuses, followe

Intra-Adenoid Cyst: A Case Report with an Immunohistochemical Study and Review of Literature.

A woman in her 50s was referred to our department with the chief complaint of nasal congestion and pharyngeal discomfort. The patient had been diagnosed with sleep apnea at the Department of Internal Medicine, and had undergone nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) therapy, but her response to the treatment was poor. A cystic lesion occupying the nasopharynx, which was detected by nasopharyngeal fiberscopy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, was thought to be the cause of the nasal congestion, pharyngeal discomfort, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).
