Low back pain in adolescents: is quality of life poorer in those seeking medical attention?

STUDY DESIGN: Paired case-control study. OBJECTIVE: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and disability in adolescents with low back pain (LBP) referred to a hospital and compare it with adolescents with and without LBP from the general population. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Recent studies show that the effect of LBP on HRQOL of adolescents from the general population is insignificant. Poorer HRQOL is attributed to those soliciting specialized medical attention. No study has evaluated HRQOL in adolescents with LBP who seek specialized attention. METHODS: All consecutive adolesc

The adolescent with slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an orthopedic disorder that occurs primarily in individuals in their early teen years. The disorder is one that requires immediate hospitalization for treatment purposes. This article discusses the symptoms of the disorder and the various treatments that are available for preventing future disability for the early adolescent. Because the adolescent has special needs and a long recovery period, nursing interventions must not only help in the resolution of the immediate orthopedic problems, but also be directed toward promotion of normal adolescent gro

From child sexual abuse to psychiatric diagnoses and complex trauma in adolescence.

CSA (Childhood Sexual Abuse) represents a major health issue, however its detection in daily psychiatric practice is remains challenging. In adolescents, CSA often takes a back seat to diagnostic and behavioral issues such as suicide attempts and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), with which it is frequently associated. Additionally, confusion persists between the perspective of complex trauma and conventional psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to compare clinical features of hospitalized adolescents with a history of CSA, to a control group, in order to identify clinical predictors o

Potential association between type 1 diabetes mellitus and gender dysphoria.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Multiple factors have been proposed to explain the increasing prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), including psychological stress. The prevalence of gender dysphoria (GD) in youth is also growing. Identifying environmental triggers, such as psychological minority stress experienced by youth with GD, that may influence the pathogenesis and management of T1DM could have important clinical implications. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of concurrent diagnosis of T1DM and GD in adolescents evaluated at a university-based children's hospita

Enterobacterial caseinolytic protease B (ClpB) and ClpB antibodies in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Caseinolytic protease B (ClpB) produced by the gut enterobacteria displays anorexigenic effects possibly due to its molecular mimicry with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), an anorexigenic neuropeptide. ClpB is known to induce α-MSH cross-reactive antibodies previously associated with eating disorders. In the present study we analyzed whether long-term changes of serum ClpB, anti-ClpB antibodies and fecal clpB gene content can be associated with disease progression in anorexia nervosa (AN). For this purpose, female adolescents diagnosed with the restrictive type of AN according to DSM-

Human papilloma virus immunization in adolescent and young adults: a cohort study to illustrate what events might be mistaken for adverse reactions.

BACKGROUND: The large-scale implementation of human papilloma virus (HPV) immunization will be followed by cases of autoimmune diseases occurring in temporal association with immunizations. To anticipate events that might be mistakenly assumed to be caused by immunization, their prevalence was monitored before vaccine introduction. METHOD: Cohort study carried out within a database of female adolescents (n = 214,896) and young adults (n = 221,472) followed in the pre-HPV vaccine era (2005), computing rates of emergency consultations, hospitalizations and outpatient consultations, and estimati

Electroconvulsive Therapy as a Safe, Effective Treatment for Catatonia in an Adolescent with a Nasogastric Tube: A Case Report.

This case provides support for electroconvulsive therapy as a safe treatment in adolescents with a feeding tube. The patient presented to our hospital with symptoms of catatonia with minimal oral intake. She had stopped eating, had minimal interaction with her environment, and spent weeks with a nasogastric tube for nutritional support. She had been referred for electroconvulsive therapy but was unable to find a local provider who would perform it on an adolescent with a nasogastric tube. She came to our hospital and received 9 rounds of electroconvulsive therapy with improvement of her catato

Adolescents do not exist alone. Involving parents in care with creativity in a "Maison des adolescents".

The theme of the 21st International Congress of the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, "Beyond Nature and Nurture," focused on issues surrounding the future of child and adolescent psychiatry. In particular, it focused on how the role of family involvement is evolving in child and adolescent psychiatry. Many mental health disorders affecting young people require a focus on the context and environment of the youth. The "Maisons des Adolescents" take into account the complexity of disorders that emerge during adolescence and their multifactorial causes. Psychological suffering

Adolescent Reproductive Health Care: Views and Practices of Pediatric Hospitalists.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many hospitalized adolescents are at increased risk for pregnancy complications due to an underlying medical condition, however sexual risk assessment is not consistently performed in this setting. While adolescents and their parents are supportive of sexual health discussion in the inpatient setting, a thorough understanding of factors that influence provision of this care among pediatric hospital physicians is lacking. This formative information is needed to facilitate efforts to improve and standardize clinical care provision. Our objective is to assess the freque
