Effects of Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity in Feedforward Inhibitory Circuits on Cerebellar Responses to Repetitive Sensory Input.

Short-term plasticity occurs at synapses throughout the cerebellum, raising the question of how such plasticity affects cerebellar processing in vivo. To address this issue, we recorded responses of molecular layer interneurons (MLIs), Purkinje cells, neurons of the cerebellar nuclei (CbN), and mossy fibers in the CbN, in awake head-fixed female mice. During short trains of air puffs applied to the whisker pad with intervals from 25 to 200 ms, the first puff generated brief suppressions of spike probability in Purkinje cells and brief elevations in all other cell types, resulting in coincident

Lomi Lomi massage for clearing interface fluid in Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) is a popular posterior lamellar keratoplasty used to tackle corneal decompensation secondary to endothelial damage. The surgical procedure involves removing the corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane along with the affected endothelium from the host, and then transplanting the same from the donor cornea.[1] During the surgery, fluid accumulation in between the DSAEK lenticule and the host corneal stroma is common occurrence. This interface fluid if not removed can lead improper positioning of the donor lenticule and in cert

Furlow Palatoplasty and Tonsillectomy for Treating Patients With Submucous Cleft Palate and Tonsillar Hypertrophy: A One-Stage Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate are more liable to have obstructive sleep apnea than children with normal palate due to narrow airways. Tonsillar hypertrophy is a common cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; hence, it is not surprising to be encountered during cleft palate repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of tonsillectomy and Furlow palatoplasty performed as a 1-stage operation in patients presenting with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and tonsillar hypertrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven pediatric patients with SMCP and hypertrophied tonsils were i

RME: effects on the nasal septum. A CBCT evaluation.

AIM: Three-dimensional images have been evaluated to study the changes that occur on the maxillary complex and the nasal septum, following rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in growing children. METHODS: The records of 39 consecutively treated patients (20 male, 19 female), aged between 6.2 and 12.3 years (mean 8.6 years, S.D. 1.5), presenting a septal deviation of more than 1 mm, were analysed. Each patient was scanned at two distinct periods. The first image (T0) was obtained before treatment and hence represented the patient's baseline condition prior to expansion. The second time point (T1)

Numerical simulation of two consecutive nasal respiratory cycles: toward a better understanding of nasal physiology.

BACKGROUND: Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations have greatly improved the understanding of nasal physiology. We postulate that simulating the entire and repeated respiratory nasal cycles, within the whole sinonasal cavities, is mandatory to gather more accurate observations and better understand airflow patterns. METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) sinonasal model was constructed from a healthy adult computed tomography (CT) scan which discretized in 6.6 million cells (mean volume, 0.008 mm3 ). CFD simulations were performed with ANSYS©FluentTMv16.0.0 software with transient and turbulent

Upper esophageal sphincter function during deglutition.

Upper esophageal sphincter function was investigated during swallows of graded volumes in 8 normal volunteers. Concurrent recordings of video-fluoroscopic and manometric studies were obtained and correlated with each other by means of a videotimer. Maximal upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressure was typically located 1.5 cm distal to the air-tissue interface between the hypopharynx and the proximal margin of the sphincter. The region in which UES pressure was greater than or equal to 50% maximal averaged 1.0 cm in length. Thus, the physiologic high-pressure zone of the UES corresponds in siz

Amelioration of sleep-disordered breathing with supplemental oxygen in older adults.

Elderly adults demonstrate increased propensity for breathing instability during sleep compared with younger adults, and this may contribute to increased prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in this population. Hence, in older adults with SDB, we examined whether addition of supplemental oxygen (O2) will stabilize breathing during sleep and alleviate SDB. We hypothesized that exposure to supplemental O2 during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep will stabilize breathing and will alleviate SDB by reducing ventilatory chemoresponsiveness and by widening the carbon dioxide (CO2) reserve

Tests of the sorption and olfactory "fovea" hypotheses in the mouse.

The spatial distribution of receptors within sensory epithelia (e.g., retina and skin) is often markedly nonuniform to gain efficiency in information capture and neural processing. By contrast, odors, unlike visual and tactile stimuli, have no obvious spatial dimension. What need then could there be for either nearest-neighbor relationships or nonuniform distributions of receptor cells in the olfactory epithelium (OE)? Adrian (Adrian ED. J Physiol 100: 459-473, 1942; Adrian ED. Br Med Bull 6: 330-332, 1950) provided the only widely debated answer to this question when he posited that the physi

Response characteristics for thermal and pressure devices commonly used for monitoring nasal and oral airflow during sleep studies.

We examined thermocouple and pressure cannulae responses to oral and nasal airflow using a polyester model of a human face, with patent nasal and oral orifices instrumented with a dual thermocouple (F-ONT2A, Grass) or a dual cannula (0588, Braebon) pressure transducer (± 10 cm H2O, Celesco) system. Tidal airflow was generated using a dual compartment facemask with pneumotachographs (Fleisch 2) connected to the model orifices. During nasal breathing: thermocouple amplitude = 0.38 Ln [pneumotachograph amplitude] + 1.31 and pressure cannula amplitude = 0.93 [pneumotachograph amplitude](2.15); dur

Biological effects of combustion-derived particles from different biomass sources on human bronchial epithelial cells.

Combustion-derived particles (CDPs), in particular from traffic, are regarded as a central contributor for adverse health effects linked to air pollution. Recently, also biomass burning has been recognized as an important source for CDPs. Here, the effects of CDPs (PM10) originating from burning of pellet, charcoal and wood on key processes associated to lung carcinogenesis were explored. Human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC3-KT) were exposed to 2.5 μg/cm2 of CDPs for 24 h and biological effects were examined in terms of cytotoxicity, inflammation, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT)-

Effect of drafting on heart rate in cross-country skiing.

The purpose of this study was to compare the heart rate responses during cross-country skiing as a leading skier, as well as in a drafting situation, 2 m behind the leader. Six male cross-country ski racers, paired for VO2max skied a 2-km course (two loops of 1 km) using the skating techniques at a fixed speed (5.6 m.s-1) on two different occasions, once as a leading skier, the other as a drafter. A recovery period of 30 min was allowed between the two trials. Heart rates (HR) were monitored every 5 s during all performances. Capillary blood lactate concentrations were taken before and at 5 mi

Microbiome-gut-brain axis contributes to patients and Bama miniature pigs with acute large ischemic stroke.

Acute large hemispheric infarction (ALHI) is an overwhelming emergency with a great challenge of gastrointestinal dysfunction clinically. Here, we initially proposed delayed bowel movements as the clinical phenotype of strike to gut-brain axis (GBA) in ALHI patients by epidemiological analysis of 499 acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. 1H NMR-based metabolomics revealed that AIS markedly altered plasma global metabolic profiling of patients compared with healthy controls. Risk factors of strike on GBA were the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≥ 5 and stroke onset time

Ultrasound measurements of fetal breathing movements in the rat.

The goal of this study was to determine when fetal breathing movements (FBMs) commence in the rat and to characterize age-dependent changes of FBMs in utero. These data provide a frame of reference for parallel in vitro studies of the cellular, synaptic, and network properties of the perinatal rat respiratory system. Ultrasound recordings were made from unanesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats from embryonic (E) day 15 (E15) to E20. Furthermore, the effects of respiratory stimulants (doxapram and aminophylline) and hypoxia on FBMs were studied. Single FBMs, occurring at a very low frequency (approxi

[Craniosinusonasal tumors].

Tumors extending into the nasal cavity, cranium, and paranasal sinuses have a number of distinctive features to take into consideration. Among them are the communication with an open air, high incidence of associated intracranial infections, specific complications (i.e. suppurative sinusitis, polyps, mucocele, pneumocephalus, nasal CSF leak). The features mentioned make these lesions unique. 50 consecutive patients underwent treatment in Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute. The diagnosis was confirmed either by CT, MRI, or at operation. Rhinological and otoneurological signs were also subjected t

Airborne bacteria and viruses.

Coughing, sneezing, talking, bed-making, turning pages of books, etc. all generate microbial aerosols which are carried and dispersed by air movements. Inhalation of these particles may cause allergic responses but whether or not infectious disease ensues depends in part on the viability and infectivity of the inhaled microbes and their landing sites. Desiccation is experienced by all airborne microbes; gram-negative bacteria and lipid-containing viruses demonstrate phase changes in their outer phospholipid bilayer membranes owing to concomitant changes in water content and/or temperature. The…

Air pollution and biomarkers of systemic inflammation and tissue repair in COPD patients.

The origin(s) of systemic inflammation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is unclear. We investigated the impact of exposure to ambient air pollution on systemic biomarkers of inflammation (C-reactive protein (CRP), tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and fibrinogen) and tissue repair (hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)) in 242 clinically stable COPD patients (mean age 67.8 years and forced expiratory volume in 1 s 71.3% predicted) in Barcelona, Spain, in 2004-2006. A spatiotemporal exposure assessment framework was applied to predict ambient nitrogen diox

Occurrence and resolution of freediving-induced pulmonary syndrome in breath-hold divers: an online survey of lung squeeze incidents.

INTRODUCTION: Breath-hold divers occasionally surface with signs of fluid accumulation and/or bleeding in air-filled spaces. This constellation of symptoms, recently termed 'freediving induced pulmonary syndrome', is thought to come from immersion pulmonary oedema and/or barotrauma of descent and is colloquially termed a 'squeeze'. There is limited understanding of the causes, diagnosis, management, and return to diving recommendations after a squeeze. METHODS: We developed an online survey that queried breath-hold divers on the circumstances and management of individual squeeze events. RESU
