Efficacy of D-penicillamine, a sequestering acetaldehyde agent, in the prevention of alcohol relapse-like drinking in rats.

RATIONALE: Nowadays, very few approved anti-relapse treatments for alcoholism exist, and their overall efficacy can be considered moderate. An exciting rationale drug development opportunity for the treatment of chronic alcoholism is the use of acetaldehyde sequestering agents. Although these compounds are able to attenuate or prevent most of the behavioral and neurochemical effects of ethanol, the efficacy of acetaldehyde sequestration, by using agents such as D-penicillamine (DP), in relapse prevention has not been studied yet. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of

Alcohol and energy drinks: a pilot study exploring patterns of consumption, social contexts, benefits and harms.

BACKGROUND: Young people around the world are increasingly combining alcohol with energy drinks (AEDs). However, as yet, limited research has been conducted examining this issue, particularly in terms of exploring patterns of consumption, social practices and the cultural contexts of AED consumption. We sought to understand how AEDs are used and socially constructed among young people. METHODS: We conducted 25 hours of observation in a variety of pubs, bars and nightclubs, as well as in-depth interviews with ten young people who regularly consumed AEDs during a session of alcohol use. RESULT

The subjective physiological, psychological, and behavioral risk-taking consequences of alcohol and energy drink co-ingestion.

BACKGROUND: The increasingly popular practice among adolescents and young adults of consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has raised concern regarding potential increases in maladaptive drinking practices, negative psychological and physiological intoxication side effects, and risky behavioral outcomes. Comparison of user types has revealed that AmED users report engaging in more risk-taking behavior relative to alcohol users. However, the comparative likelihood of risk-taking according to session type (i.e., AmED vs. alcohol session) remains relatively unknown. Thus, this study wa

Do patients with bipolar disorder drink alcohol for different reasons when depressed, manic or euthymic?

OBJECTIVE: Many studies report high prevalence rates for co-morbid alcohol problems in bipolar disorder (BP). Some hypothesize that individuals use alcohol to self-medicate, but few studies examine the range of possible reasons and none explicitly explores the role of mood state. We examined drinking motives in BP depression, (hypo)mania and euthymia according to Cooper's cognitive motivational model of alcohol use (Cooper, 1994). METHODS: Twenty-seven participants with BP were interviewed using the Drinking Motives Questionnaire. A calendar-based measure of alcohol use--the FORM90--was used

[Relationship between drinking, smoking, and dietary habits and the body mass index of Japanese alcoholic men].

Malnutrition and emaciation in alcoholics is associated with various alcoholism-related diseases, including Wernicke's encephalopathy, aero-digestive tract cancer, and serious metabolic disorders. We used a self-administered questionnaire survey for structured dietary habit screening to evaluate the dietary profiles of 467 Japanese alcoholic men aged 40 years or over and their relationship to body mass index (BMI). Their average daily ethanol consumption was 119 +/- 65 g (845 +/- 463 kcal). The survey showed that 50.5% of the subjects consumed three meals a day; 32.8%, two meals; 12.2%, one me

Influence of energy drinks and alcohol on post-exercise heart rate recovery and heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Media have anecdotally reported that drinking energy drinks in combination with alcohol and exercise could cause sudden cardiac death. This study investigated changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate variability after intake of an energy drink, taken in combination with alcohol and exercise. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers (five men and five women aged 19-30) performed maximal bicycle ergometer exercise for 30 min after: (i) intake of 0.75 l of an energy drink mixed with alcohol; (ii) intake of energy drink; and, (iii) no intake of any drink. ECG was continuously reco

An extract of the Chinese herbal root kudzu reduces alcohol drinking by heavy drinkers in a naturalistic setting.

BACKGROUND: Of the available medications for treating alcohol-related problems, none are universally effective, and all have side effects that may limit their use. Extracts of kudzu containing a variety of isoflavones have been shown to reduce alcohol drinking in rats and hamsters. METHODS: The present study was designed to test the efficacy of a kudzu extract in a clinical population. Male and female "heavy" alcohol drinkers were treated with either placebo or a kudzu extract for 7 days and then given an opportunity to drink their preferred brand of beer while in a naturalistic laboratory se…

Expression of p53 protein related to smoking and alcoholic beverage drinking habits in patients with esophageal cancers.

In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), we used immunohistochemical analysis to further elucidate the correlation of p53 protein expression with clinicopathological factors, as well as with risk factors, such as tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and a family history of cancer, using odds ratios (ORs). The expression of p53 protein was demonstrated in 55.1% of 89 esophageal SCC cases examined by immunohistochemistry. The expression of p53 protein did not correlate with gender, age, histological grading, lymph node metastasis, or TNM stage. The prevalence of p53 expression was significan

An examination of the underlying influence of temperament and problem behaviors on drinking behaviors in a sample of adult offspring of alcoholics.

The present study investigated the potential mediating influence of childhood and early adolescent temperament and problem behaviors on the relation between parental alcoholism and adult drinking behaviors in a sample of 153 offspring of alcoholics and their controls. The influence of the alcoholic parent's and the offspring's gender on this relation was also assessed. Both gender of the parent and gender of the offspring were found to have important differential effects. More specifically, individuals with an alcoholic father consumed more alcohol, were more concerned about their drinking, an

Alcohol mixed with energy drinks among university students in Poland: prevalence, determinants, and health implications.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has emerged as a public health concern, particularly among young adults. Evidence shows that combining energy drinks (EDs) with alcohol can mask ethanol's sedative effects, promoting higher intake and risky behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among university students in the Mazovia region of Poland (July 2025). An anonymous questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, EDs consumption, AmED use, co-use of psychoactive substances, consumption contexts, and adverse effects. Associations were analyzed u

A systematic review on the factors associated with the accuracy of self-estimated alcohol intoxication: Implications for drink driving.

INTRODUCTION: Drink driving is a dangerous behavior associated with significant road trauma. The ability to estimate one's alcohol plays an important role in the decision to drink and drive. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding what factors are associated with the accuracy of self-estimated blood and breath alcohol concentrations (BAC/BrAC) and discuss relevant implications for drink driving. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, a literature search was conducted on four databases, followed by a manual search usi

Role of Drinking Attitudes and Trait Impulsivity in Prenatal Alcohol Craving and Consumption in Mothers of Reproductive Age.

Recognizing the severe consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), the present study explored the role of drinking attitudes, trait impulsivity, and decision-making toward instant gratification in alcohol craving and consumption during pregnancy among mothers of reproductive age. Utilizing participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N = 141), we first categorized mothers into three groups: those who neither craved nor consumed alcohol during their last pregnancy, those who craved but did not consume, and those who craved and consumed al

'Think before you drink': Challenging narratives on foetal alcohol spectrum disorder and indigeneity in Canada.

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has emerged as a significant public health issue, in Canada and elsewhere. Health experts increasingly acknowledge that the disproportionate impact of FASD on indigenous people is driven by social and historical contexts, especially in settler colonial states like Canada. However, they generally frame FASD as preventable through abstinence and the effects of FASD as manageable through provision of appropriate medical and legal protection to affected offspring. Drawing from Marxist, anticolonial and anti-imperial theories and applying a Critical Discourse

Drink goal difficulty effect on outcomes in moderation-based alcohol treatment for sexual minority men.

Sexual minority men (SMM) who drink heavily are at a greater risk for developing alcohol use disorders (AUD) and associated negative consequences. Barriers to treatment prevent SMM from accessing traditional care, and moderation-based alcohol treatment is a more desirable alternative. As such, investigating effective goal setting in moderation-based alcohol treatment, particularly, which goals yield the most effective outcomes, is warranted. Applying the tenets of Goal Setting Theory, this study explored the relationship between goal difficulty and goal achievement. In a secondary data analysi

Altered frontostriatal white matter microstructure is associated with familial alcoholism and future binge drinking in adolescence.

Adolescence is a time of significant neurobiological development, including changes in white matter microstructure. Familial alcoholism and adolescent binge-drinking have both been associated with altered white matter microstructure; however, the temporal nature of these effects, and their interaction, is unclear. Using diffusion-weighted imaging and voxel-wise multilevel modeling, the effects of familial alcoholism and future binge-drinking on white matter microstructural development were assessed in 45 adolescents, who went on to binge-drink (but were alcohol-naive at baseline), and 68 adole

Family history of problem drinking is associated with less sensitivity of alcohol demand to a next-day responsibility.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral economic demand curves measure alcohol consumption as a function of price and may capture clinically relevant individual differences in alcohol-reinforcing efficacy. This study used a novel, behavioral-economic, hypothetical demand-curve paradigm to examine the association between family history of alcohol misuse and individual differences in both alcohol demand and the relative sensitivity of alcohol demand to next-day responsibilities. METHOD: Participants were 207 college students (47% male, 68.5% White, 27.4% African American, Mage = 19.5 years) who reported at least

Improved effect of the combination naltrexone/D-penicillamine in the prevention of alcohol relapse-like drinking in rats.

Opioid antagonists are licensed drugs for treating alcohol use disorders; nonetheless, clinical studies have evidenced their limited effectiveness. Preclinical findings indicate that opioid receptor (OR) antagonists, such as naltrexone (NTX), reduce the alcohol deprivation effect (ADE). However, a detailed analysis of published data shows the existence of a delayed increase in ethanol consumption after continuous OR blockade, a phenomenon originally called as 'delayed ADE'. We have recently reported that D-penicillamine (DP) is able to prevent ADE through a mechanism dependent on the inactivat
