PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of a frontalis muscle flap eyelid reanimation technique for correction of severe congenital ptosis and associated amblyopia in infants.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective chart review of patients 12 months of age or younger with unilateral or bilateral congenital ptosis and associated amblyopia or deemed at high risk for amblyopia due to visual deprivation. Following ptosis repair via a frontalis muscle flap technique, primary outcomes of postoperative eyelid position and amblyopia reversal were assessed.
RESULTS: Seventeen eyes of 12 participan…

Refractive amblyopia was found in 780 children (1.0% of the screened population and 11.5% of the examined population), and of these, 211 (27%) were bilaterally amblyopic.
CONCLUSIONS: These data represent the largest published sample of vision screening results on pres …

INTRODUCTION: Amblyopia is one of the common causes of childhood visual impairment. The prevalence of amblyopia usually varies according to the age group of the studied population and the factors prevailing in that region. The upper limit of the critical time when amblyopia can develop is around eight years of age and it can be permanent if corrective measures are not taken in time.
AIM: The purpose of study was to know the profile and pattern of amblyopia in children aged 5-15 years with refractive error in Uttarakhand and to compare it with national and regional (South Asian) studies.

With abnormal visual cortical development, amblyopia is generally associated with high spatial frequency deficits in spatial vision. In this study, we aim to answer a critical question: How much high spatial frequency information is available to the amblyopic visual system? We measured the tilt after-effect following adaption to perceptually resolvable and unresolvable sinewave gratings, and showed that gratings with spatial frequency up to 1.5 times the cutoff frequency in grating orientation identification can still produce significant tilt after-effects in adults with amblyopia. Our results…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the stability of visual acuity improvement during the first year after cessation of amblyopia treatment other than spectacle wear in children aged 7 to 12 years.
METHODS: At the completion of a multicenter randomized trial during which amblyopia treated with patching and atropine improved by at least 2 lines on the electronic Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study testing protocol, 80 patients aged 7 to 12 years were followed up while not receiving treatment (other than spectacle wear) for 1 year.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of ocular features, particularly refractive errors and amblyopia risk factors (ARFs), in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Additionally, it seeks to explore their associations with selected prenatal factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 436 children diagnosed with ASD and 508 typically developing controls, all aged between 2 and 9 years from the Tianjin region. Refractive status was measured using the Spot Vision Screener, while ARFs were determined following the guidelines set by the American Academy…

PURPOSE: To review the efficacy of dichoptic and monocular strategies for treating monocular amblyopia, and to examine the factors that determine the degree of recovery from amblyopia.
METHODS: Mean and individual participant data (IPD) from studies that used either monocular or dichoptic training methods to treat monocular amblyopic patients were analyzed. A mixed-effects model was used to analyze influential factors. Studies were searched using PubMed, OVID, Cochrane library, and EBM reviews.
RESULTS: The mean improvements in visual acuity (VA) for dichoptic and monocular training were 0.1…

PURPOSE: To evaluate treatment-induced changes in retinal structural parameters and ocular biometric measurements in children with hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia following therapy.
METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included 30 children aged 5-7 years with newly diagnosed hyperopic anisometropic amblyopia (21 mild and 9 moderate) and 30 age-matched normal controls. All participants underwent comprehensive ocular examinations, including uncorrected and best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), cycloplegic refraction, and axial length (AL) measurement using the ZEISS IOL Master…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, and low vision are more common among children with hearing impairments in comparison with their hearing peers. Neglecting visual disorders can pose educational and social problems for these children. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of refractive errors, amblyopia, strabismus, and low vision among hearing-impaired and deaf students in Kermanshah.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 79 deaf and hearing impaired students within the age range of 7-20 years (mean age of 15.01 ± 2.72) underwent optometric examinations, inc…

BACKGROUND: Current treatments for amblyopia, typically patching or pharmacological blurring, have limited success. Less than two-thirds of children achieve good acuity of 0.20 logMAR in the amblyopic eye, with limited improvement of stereopsis, and poor adherence to treatment. A new approach, based on presentation of movies or computer games separately to each eye, may yield better results and improve adherence. These treatments aim to balance the input of visual information from each eye to the brain. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether binocular treatments in children, aged three to eight yea…

Amblyopia is related to the impairment of visual system, especially visual cortex. l-Dopa has been reported to treat the disease, but the effect of its derived methyl ester has not been investigated. Therefore this study assessed the anatomic and physiologic effects of 30 days' treatment of l-dopa methyl ester at different doses on visual cortex area 17 in feline model with amblyopia induced by monocular vision deprivation. Immunohistochemical staining and Western blot were used to examine the structural changes of nerve cells and the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF), respectively. Comp…

BACKGROUND: Nearly 80% of preschool age children never get an eye examination (1). Many "back to school" physical exams do not test for common vision disorders. Untreated eye and vision problems can interfere with most life experiences. The prevalence of undetected vision problems among preschool age children is estimated to be 5% to 10% (2). Failure to detect visual impairment early may have a permanent effect on long term vision outcomes, education achievement, and self esteem (3). The most common vision disorders among children are strabismus, amblyopia and optical problems impairing visual…

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between Active Vision Therapy (AVT) combined with occlusion and occlusion-only therapy in task-based saccadic and pursuit visuomotor performance and visual outcomes in children with anisometropic amblyopia.
METHODS: Forty children (median age=9years, IQR=7-11) with persistent anisometropic amblyopia after six weeks of spectacle adaptation were alternately assigned to AVT-occlusion (n = 23) or occlusion-only (n = 17). BCVA, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity, and task-based saccadic and smooth pursuit performance were measured at baseline, three weeks, six we…

Ophthalmic professional organizations such as the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) strive to support the optimal detection, prevention, and treatment of amblyopia to reduce the community burden of vision loss. To support population-level monitoring with regard to outcomes of childhood amblyopia screening and treatment, the AAPOS Vision Screening and the Research committees propose a set of guidelines for assessing population prevalence of persistent vision impairment due to amblyopia. The committees defined "residual amblyopia" as persistent vision impair…
