PURPOSE: Nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms make diagnosis of amebiasis difficult. Certain colonoscopic findings predict amebic colitis while others suggest different diagnoses. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic capability of colonic evaluation of amebiasis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of all amebiasis cases admitted to our institution between 2003 and 2012. Cases were diagnosed by clinical presentation, laboratory examinations, and colonoscopy with biopsy and microscopic examination. Patients were stratified as right-sided colitis and proctosigmoiditis. A systematic review…

Amebiasis is a significant health problem in developing countries. Humans are infected by two morphologically identical species of Entamoeba. Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic colitis and liver abscess, and Entamoeba dispar is noninvasive. Giardia intestinalis infection is seen worldwide and in all age groups. But giardiasis is especially prevalent in countries with poor sanitation and unsafe water, where it's responsible for most cases of childhood diarrhea. Cryptosporidium parvum, a protozoon, is an obligate intracellular parasite which can cause fatal diarrheal disease in immunocompromise…

BACKGROUND: Amebiasis is a parasitic infection with Entamoeba histolytica. Pulmonary amebiasis is rare since the infection is commonly manifested as amebic colitis or liver abscess. Most pleuropulmonary amebiasis is seen in patients with amebic liver abscesses. A pulmonary amebic lesion without either a liver abscess or amebic colitis is extremely rare. Thus, reported cases of sputum cytologic diagnosis of a pulmonary amebic lesion from a patient without a liver abscess are also very rare.
CASE: A 53-year-old man presented with a dry cough and mild fever. Chest radiography revealed an abnorma…

Entamoeba histolytica, the causative organism of invasive intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis, infects approximately 50 million people each year, causing an estimated 40 to 100 thousand deaths annually. Because amebae only infect humans and some higher non-human primates, an anti-amebic vaccine could theoretically eradicate the organism. Uncontrolled epidemiologic studies indicate that acquired immunity to amebic infection probably occurs and that such a vaccine might be feasible. Application of molecular biologic techniques has led to rapid progress towards understanding how Entamoeba hi…

T-cell mediated immunity is an important defense mechanism against amebiasis. However, organ transplant recipients with severe T-cell immunosuppression are not at increased risk of having Entamoeba histolytica invasive disease. The reasons are unclear and probably multifactorial, but it is likely that the absence of intestinal colonization with pathogenic strains in countries where transplants occur and the judicious intake of possible contaminated food and water are important contributing factors. We describe the first report of a liver transplant recipient with severe E. histolytica colitis …

A group of 96 patients with Invasive Hepatic Amebiasis, was studied in a prospective clinical trial. The platelet count was measured for each patient on admission and on the tenth day of treatment. The patient were classified into two groups: the first one for patients with unfavorable results and the second one for patients with favorable results. The presence of thrombocytosis was significant in the second group, with a sensitivity of 56% and specificity of 70% in the initial determination, and of 82% and 68% at the tenth day respectively. With this finding, it could be considered that throm…

Some strains of mice are known to be relatively resistant to hepatic or intestinal amebic infections. In order to know if the intestinal res … susceptible and CBA mice more resistant. Our results suggest that genetic resistance to intestinal amebiasis is expressed in mice in the early phases of infection.

Three cases of hepatic amebiasis and one case of gastric amebiasis were diagnosed in black and white colobus monkeys during a 9-month period. The diagnosis was difficult because of the absence of trophozoites and cysts in the feces and because of few trophozoites found in many of the hepatic lesions. Indirect hemagglutination titers were diagnostic in 2 monkeys.

From June 1978 through December 1980, at least 36 cases of amebiasis occurred in persons who had had colonic-irrigation therapy at a chiropractic clinic in western Colorado. Of 10 persons who required colectomy, six did. Of 176 persons who had been to the clinic in the last four months of 1980, 80 had received other forms of treatment. Twenty-one per cent of the colonic-irrigation group had bloody diarrhea, as compared with 1 per cent of the non-irrigation group (P = 0.00013). Thirty-seven per cent of the colonic-irrigation group who submitted specimens had evidence of amebic infection on eith…

This report describes the development and evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies to Enta … mycotic, and other clinical diseases. The assay was positive in 26% of 461 patients with suspected amebiasis and in all of 53 patients with amoebic liver abscess. The ELISA was found to be a specific, highly sensitive, and reliable procedure for detecting anti-E. histolytica antibodies in humans.

The various classes of immunoglobulins with antibody function against E. histolytica were studied in 8 children with amebic liver abscess and in 7 with acute intestinal amebiasis. The predominant fraction was IgG in 7 patients from the first group and in 1 from the second; this suggests a secondary type humoral immune response which implies a previous experience with E. histolytica antigens. A definitive predominance of IgM was shown in a patient with amebic liver abscess, the same as in primary humoral immune response. Humoral antibodies did not develop in the remaining 6 patients with acute …
