Physical and mental health outcomes in Syrian lower limb amputees: the impact of prosthetic rehabilitation in post-conflict settings.

INTRODUCTION: Lower limb amputation has a significant impact on an individual’s overall quality of life, with prosthetic devices serving as essential tools for rehabilitation and mobility restoration. In Syria, where access to advanced medical care remains constrained, identifying the key factors affecting the well-being of prosthesis users is crucial for enhancing rehabilitation strategies. This study examines the sociodemographic and health-related determinants influencing the quality of life among lower-limb amputees who rely on prosthetic devices in Syria. METHODS: This research employed a

[Current issues of disability and rehabilitation of elderly and senile patients with lower limb loss due to vascular pathology.].

The majority of patients with amputation defect of the lower extremities are elderly citizens with high co- and polymorbidity, the presence of several geriatric syndromes, which adversely affects the prognosis, reduces the rehabilitation potential, in some cases leads to the development of cardiovascular complications, amputation of the second limb, severe disability and high postoperative mortality. The key link in the rehabilitation process of disabled people with a lower limb stump is to provide them with a functional prosthesis. The article provides an analysis of morbidity, primary disabi

Progressive ossification due to retained surgical sponge after upper leg amputation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous cases are described of patients in whom foreign objects were found after surgery. Foreign body granuloma caused by retained surgical sponge, also called gossypiboma, mostly occur in the abdominal cavity but very seldom in limbs. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old Caucasian man presented with asymmetrical walking pattern and progressive pain in his leg, which was severely injured and amputated seven years before. A firm swelling of soft tissue with calcifications was localized in the stump. Roentgenogram and MRI showed a retained surgical sponge with calcifications. Open s

[Failure of upper limb macro-implantations: surgery and outcome. 11 cases].

The failure of macro-implantation of the upper limb must not be considered as the end of a therapeutic method, but instead as a step in the functional rehabilitation of the upper limb. From a group of 24 patients that have been operated with a macro-implantation of the upper limb, we have seen 11 patients for who the reimplantation had failed. We have studied the surgical procedure of those failures, the mid-term evolution (prosthesis and operations), and a long-term evolution with the functional future of those patients. A surgical procedure with latissimus dorsi flap was necessary in six cas

Free-flap salvage of a traumatic below-knee amputation.

A traumatic below-knee amputation with extensive soft-tissue loss and tibial bone exposure was salvaged by employing microsurgical free-tissue transfer to obtain stable soft-tissue coverage. The free flap covering the bony stump and knee function have done well with over 1 year follow-up.

Transverse deficiency of the hand in one of monozygotic twins.

In this paper, we report on one male infant of twins with a left hand anomaly. The hand deformities were diagnosed as so called "congenital amputation" which is a synonym of "transverse deficiency" in Swanson's classification. The left hand showed spontaneous amputation at the level of the palm. There were two rudimentary digits on the stump, and an extremely hypoplastic thumb and little finger. The other twin had no anomaly. The results of laboratory findings on blood groups and HLA types suggest that these twins are monozygotic. From these facts, we considered that environmental factors are

The upper-extremity amputee. Early and immediate post-surgical prosthetic fitting.

The results of immediate and early post-surgical prosthetic fitting in eighty-seven upper-extremity amputees as well as the results in nine patients with shoulder dislocation who were fitted with temporary devices were reviewed. No local wound complications occurred and the rate of prosthetic acceptance was high. A practice prosthesis, with a filler insert formed from liquid Silastic foam allowed to set between the walls of the practice prosthesis and the amputation stump, was used extensively in this series. With the Silastic insert and practice prosthesis, prosthetic training could be instit

[Amputation neuroma mimicking common bile duct cancer: a case report].

Amputation neuroma or traumatic neuroma is a tumor-like secondary hyperplasia that may develop after an accidental or surgical trauma. Amputation neuroma of the bile duct has occasionally been reported which occurred in the cystic duct stump late after the cholecystectomy. However, even if the amputation neuroma is suspected in a patient with late-onset jaundice after cholecystectomy, the differential diagnosis from a malignancy is difficult preoperatively. We experienced a case of the amputation neuroma of common bile duct (CBD) developed in a 70-year-old man who presented with a polypoid mas

Quality of life of diabetes amputees following major and minor lower limb amputations.

INTRODUCTION: Minor amputation was performed as a salvage procedure because most of the patients were not able to ambulate and become dependent following major amputation. Minor amputation is defined as amputation at the level of ankle joint and below while major amputation is defines by amputation above the ankle joint. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of life among diabetes patients following major and minor amputations. METHODS: A total of 94 diabetes patients were reviewed six months following amputation. Their walking ability, dependency status and quality of life were ev

Lower extremity amputation level: selection using noninvasive hemodynamic methods of evaluation.

The superior rehabilitative potential of the below knee amputee versus the above knee amputee is well known. In end-stage occlusive vascular disease, the limiting factor in determining how distal an amputation can be performed is whether or not the stump will heal. The use of clinical judgement to determine the correct amputation level has historically been proven to be too subjective. Therefore, several procedures have been proposed which would hopefully fulfill the need for a reliable, objective method for determining the optimal amputation level. These procedures include the measurement of

Spinal Cord Stimulation for the Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The annual number of amputations is estimated to be between 200 and 500 million worldwide. The different etiologies of these amputations can be sorted into the following categories: traumatic, vascular, infectious, and tumoral. Since the twentieth century, progress has been made in stump management, surgical techniques to treat amputation, and rehabilitation, with improvements made in the prostheses designed for amputees. Among amputees, 10-79% will suffer from stump pain and phantom limb pain (PLP). Several studies have highlighted the various neuromodulation techniques available

Pain and its absence in an unfortunate family of amputees.

A family is described in which 5 male members sustained major traumatic injuries of their limbs. Two of these men had amputations of two of their limbs. The one surviving amputee is left handed. The development of phantom sensations, phantom pain and stump pain was unpredictable, despite their being first-degree relatives, and was independent of handedness.

Below knee stump reconstruction by turn-up technique. Report of 2 cases.

In cases of persistent recurrence of tumor or intractable infection affecting the proximal half of the tibia, knee disarticulation or short below knee amputation is sometimes inevitable. If the knee joint is lost, rehabilitation is very difficult and sometimes impossible to attain in terms of active normal daily living. A new technique was designed for reconstruction of the stump following below knee amputation after en bloc resection of the proximal 2/3 of the tibia that included turn-up of the distal composite graft to 180 degrees and rigid fixation. It was applied to 2 cases. The followup s

[Rotationplasty as an alternative to amputation].

Rotationplasty can be used as an alternative to amputation when conservative treatment is not possible, for example in malignant tumours of the knee. The principle of the operation is to rotate the lower leg through 180 ° after resection of the distal femur and in this way the ankle joint replaces the knee joint. This surgical technique, although complex, allows satisfactory carcinological resection with a functional outcome superior to amputation above the knee as well as a better quality-of-life. Patients do not develop phantom pain, neuroma or stump discomfort because it is not an amputatio

The use of the reverse radial fasciosubcutaneous flap to provide soft tissue coverage and a distal recipient artery in a difficult case of toe-to-thumb transfer.

Traumatic amputation of the thumb is a devastating injury. Toe-to-hand [Wei FC, Chen HC, Chuang CC, Chen HT. Microsurgical thumb reconstruction with toe transfer: selection of various techniques. Another frequently encountered difficulty in cases of trauma

Composite osteocutaneous groin flap combined with neurovascular island flap for thumb reconstruction.

Three amputated thumbs were reconstructed with a composite osteocutaneous groin flap and a neurovascular island flap. The average age at the time of surgery was 28 (range 25-35) years. The level of the amputation was distal to metacarpophalangeal joint in two cases and proximal in one case. The injury mechanism was avulsion in all cases. The postoperative follow-up periods ranged from 27 to 30 months. There were no cases of skin necrosis, bone resorption or infection. Radiographs and three-phase bone scans showed union of the iliac bone block and the stump without any resorption in all three p
