[Sclerotherapy for the treatment of thyroid functional anatomy].

Comparative efficacy of ethanol and ethoxysclerol in sclerotherapy was studied among 37 patients with thyroid functional autonomy. It is shown that ethoxysclerol exceeds ethanol in efficiency of treatment, doesn't lead to depressed function of treated thyroid lobe and is better tolerated. Thereby ethoxysclerol should be always used as a sclerosant in patients with hormonal disturbances and multiple "hot" nodules.

Anatomy of L4 to S3 nerve roots.

PURPOSE: To study the course of L4 to S3 nerve roots and their distance with the ala of the sacrum and the sacroiliac joint. METHODS: The embalmed left half pelvis of 25 male and 27 female cadavers aged 30 to 91 (mean, 68) years were studied. The ventral rami of the L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3 nerve roots were dissected along their courses from the corresponding intervertebral foramina to the lesser pelvis. The distances between each nerve root and the most anterior and inferior parts of the sacroiliac joint were measured in both coronal and sagittal planes. RESULTS: There were 3 locations of fus

[Osseous vascular anatomy in the hand and wrist].

The design and the realization of vascularized osseous grafts at the hand and the wrist require a precise knowledge of the general and regional anatomy. This article gives first a progress report on current knowledge about the general organization of arterial and venous vascularization, of the long bones (number and localization of the nutrient foramina, communication between the epiphyseo-metaphyseal and diaphyseal networks) and of the short bones, in the adult and the child, before the closing of the growth plate. The general organization of arterial vascularization of the hand and the wrist…

The normal and abnormal anatomy of the coronary arteries.

Beneficial therapeutic options are increasingly available for coronary arterial disease. To take full advantage of these options, those performing the interventions require a thorough knowledge of the normal arrangement, and likely anatomic variations, of the coronary arterial system. A comprehensive appreciation of the architecture of the coronary arterial system, therefore, is crucial to optimal cardiac care. Simple attention to potential variations in the origin and course of the major coronary arteries can greatly enhance clinical outcomes. The objective of this review, therefore, is to de

Neuroembryology and functional anatomy of craniofacial clefts.

The master plan of all vertebrate embryos is based on neuroanatomy. The embryo can be anatomically divided into discrete units called neuromeres so that each carries unique genetic traits. Embryonic neural crest cells arising from each neuromere induce development of nerves and concomitant arteries and support the development of specific craniofacial tissues or developmental fields. Fields are assembled upon each other in a programmed spatiotemporal order. Abnormalities in one field can affect the shape and position of developing adjacent fields. Craniofacial clefts represent states of excess …

Nasal, septal, and turbinate anatomy and embryology.

This article discusses the development and anatomy of the nasal septum and structures of the lateral nasal wall. Emphasis is placed on anatomic variations associated with surgically correctable nasal obstruction. Common variations, such as deviated nasal septum, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, paradoxic middle turbinate, and concha bullosa, are discussed. Rare developmental causes of nasal obstruction are briefly outlined.

Anatomy of a dextrocardia case with situs solitus.

We present a rare case of dextrocardia in the corpse of a female child, aged approximately one year old, presenting situs solitus. The cases of dextrocardia reported in the literature normally describe multiple associated cardiac malformations. In the present study, it is noteworthy the fact that a complete specular image of the heart and the vessels of the base of the heart was not found. There was no atrioventricular discordance or other intra and extracardiac malformations, which are commonly seen in cases of dextrocardia. A large ductus arteriosus was found, as well as the anomalous positi

Microsurgical anatomy of the superior orbital fissure.

The microanatomy of the superior orbital fissure (SOF) was studied in 96 sides of cadaver specimens. The SOF is a narrow bony cleft that lies at the apex of the orbit between the greater and lesser wings of the sphenoid. Through this fissure, many important structures enter the orbit from the middle cranial fossa including the third, fourth, sixth cranial nerves, and the ophthalmic branch of the fifth nerve. In addition, the superior opthalmamic vein exits the orbit to drain into the cavernous sinus via the SOF. The fissure can be divided into three anatomical regions by the annulus of Zinn (c…

[Classic and endoscopic surgical anatomy of the groin].

Knowledge of the groin's anatomy is indispensable to understanding the pathological anatomy of hernias and their surgical treatment. Although classical anatomy provides an understanding of the techniques of open surgery, learning celioscopic techniques requires a new mental representation and specific training. The objective of this focus was to describe the anatomic approaches to inguinal hernias and compare them to those described during the celioscopic approach.

The pathology of the long ulna: anatomy and treatment.

A long ulna, as a result of congenital differential growth, such as Madelung's disease, or injury, commonly a consequence of a malunited distal radial fracture, may present clinically as pain, decreased motion, mainly of pronosupination, and weakness of grip. Secondary effects may include perforations and tears of the triangular fibrocartilage complex, cartilage wear of the proximal surface of lunate and triquetrum and tears of the lunotriquetral ligament. Positive ulnar variance may be evident on X-rays but a prominent ulnar head cannot always be excluded when there is neutral ulnar variance

Anatomy of arteries and veins of submandibular glands.

BACKGROUND: Transplanting a vascularized autologous submandibular gland (SMG) is considered an effective method to treat severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca. But the operation may fail due to the anatomic variances in the blood vessels of SMG. The present study aimed to investigate the submandibular glands at the microanatomy level. METHODS: The microanatomy of blood vessels including arteries and veins of submandibular gland was investigated using 30 adult corpses and 60 submandibular glands were anatomized under a surgical microscope. The lengths and diameters of the arterial and venous gland…

The anterior mediastinum: anatomy and imaging procedures.

The mediastinum is divided into compartments (anterior, middle, posterior) on the basis of lateral chest radiographs. Several anatomical and radiological classifications of the mediastinum are reported in the literature. Most mediastinal abnormalities are initially suspected following chest radiography; the need for further investigation and the most appropriate imaging modality are largely dictated by the tentative diagnosis made on this examination. Although routine chest radiography initiates the evaluation of mediastinal disorders, it is rarely diagnostic: notable exceptions are teeth or b
