OBJECTIVE: Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium) is an herbaceous annual plant with worldwide distribution. The seeds contain the glycoside carboxyatractyloside, which is highly toxic to animals. We describe nine cases of carboxyatractyloside poisoning in humans which, to our knowledge, has not previously been reported. The clinical, laboratory and histopathological findings and our therapeutic approach are also discussed.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The patients presented with acute onset abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, palpitations, sweating and dyspnoea. Three of them developed convul

The recommended treatment of human chloroquine poisoning is diazepam and adrenaline but neither has been evaluated in controlled clinical trials. We investigated whether diazepam provided any added benefit over barbiturate anaesthesia and whether the protective effect of catecholamines in chloroquine poisoning was mediated through alpha or beta receptor stimulation. Rats, anaesthetised with thiobutobarbitone had a continuous intravenous infusion of 3 mg/kg/min of chloroquine. This caused a steady decline in pulse rate and blood pressure. When diazepam (3 mg/kg iv) was administered 5-10 min lat

Thirty of 200 ewes died or were euthanatized during a 21-day period following a 1-day accidental exposure to natural gas condensate, a complex mixture of hydrocarbons obtained during collection of natural gas from wells. Despite access to potable well water, the poisoned ewes willingly consumed toxic doses of condensate that contaminated surface water. Eight animals died without premonitory signs; the remainder became ill over the course of a few days to 3 weeks. The principal cause of mortality was aspiration pneumonia, but myocardial degeneration and necrosis, renal tubular damage, gastritis

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S), a high-threat chemical agent, occurs naturally in a variety of settings. Despite multiple incidents of exposures and deaths, no FDA-approved antidote exists. A rapid-acting, easy to administer antidote is needed. We conducted a randomized control trial in swine comparing intramuscular administration of aminotetrazole cobinamide (2.9 mL, 18 mg/kg) to no treatment following inhalation of H2 S gas. We found that aminotetrazole cobinamide administered 2 min after the onset of respiratory depression-defined as a tidal volume of less than 3 mL/kg for 2 consecutive minutes-yi

A high-performance liquid chromatographic-tandem mass spectrometric (HPLC-MS-MS) method was developed and validated to determine simultaneously coumafuryl and coumateralyl in animal tissues using warfarin as an internal standard (IS). Animal tissue samples were extracted with ethyl acetate and cleaned by Oasis HLB solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges. After pretreatment, the separation was performed on a XDB C18 column with an isocratic mobile phase of acetic acid-ammonium acetate (5 mmol l(-1), pH = 4.5)/methanol (30:70, v/v). Detection was carried out on a mass spectrometer by negative el

Worldwide, the management and evaluation of risks caused by chemical compounds are handled by the aid of threshold concentrations below of which one can be sure that no biological effect whatsoever can be observed. At the working place, we use the maximally tolerated concentration of the chemicals (MAK) and, in addition, the biologically tolerated concentrations (BTC) of the compounds either in blood or in other body fluids to which a male and/or female worker is exposed. These threshold concentrations should cover any toxic effect including on the one hand mere deviations of clinical chemical

Ciguateric syndrome is a food poisoning associated with the consumption of some species of fish that have accumulated ciguatoxins (CTXs) in their tissues. The effects of the syndrome occur with nervous imbalances which have been described for quite some time, and mentioned in sailing literature for centuries. In the last decade, research has been focused on the implementation of analytical methods for toxin identification and the study of action modes of CTXs to design effective treatments. However, an important aspect is to determine the damage that CTXs caused in the organs of affected indiv

Pathological findings and liver and kidney analyses confirmed that cattle had died of chronic copper poisoning on a farm in the north-eastern Transvaal. This is the first known published record of chronic copper intoxication of cattle in southern Africa. An epidemiological study revealed that a source of copper was air pollution which could have arisen from a nearby copper smelting unit. Buffalo and impala in an adjacent area of the Kruger National Park were found to have significantly higher liver copper levels than animals elsewhere in the Park. Prophylactic licks, containing zinc sulphate a

There are no reports of xylene/amitraz ingestion in children. Studies have characterized the adverse reactions caused by dermal applications in dogs, but the mechanisms involved were undetermined Accidental ingestion of the product by a child prompted a retrospective search of the medical records of the Georgia Animal Poison Information Center to profile the signalment, clinical signs, route of exposure and target sites of the suspected toxicosis in dogs. Clinical signs of depression, ataxia, stupor, and coma were most attributable to the xylene and propylene oxide components. Hyperglycemia, h

Renal function studies were performed in three cases of paraquat poisoning. Acute renal failure was observed in all three cases. Glomerular filtration rate improved for two patients who survived three weeks, illustrating the reversible nature of paraquat-induced acute renal failure. A mild to moderate transient proteinuria was observed during the first and second weeks following paraquat ingestion. Renal glucosuria, marked amino aciduria, and increased fractional excretion of phosphorus, sodium, and uric acid were observed. These findings, which have not been previously described in man, are i

Naturally occurring aflatoxicosis is described in goats fed a concentrate mixture containing polkudu meal (defatted residue from grated coconut after juice extraction). Toxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus were present in the concentrate and aflatoxins were recovered from the liver and urine of affected animals. Hepatic lesions in poisoned goats consisted of bile duct hyperplasia and periportal fibrosis; renal lesions included necrosis of tubular epithelial cells and proteinaceous exudation in the glomerular space. Similar lesions were produced experimentally in goats with aflatoxin and the

The potentiality of calciferol (alone and combined with warfarin) for the control of commensal rats and mice has been examined in the laboratory. Nearly all animals fed on 0.1% calciferol for 2 days died. Though illness usually reduced food intake after the first 24 hr. there was no sign of aversion to the poison at 0.1% - which is considered to be the lowest concentration suitable for use against Rattus norvegicus, R. rattus and Mus musculus in the field. There was some indication that resistance to warfarin in R. norvegicus may be correlated with susceptibility to calciferol. Toxicity tests

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Hydroxocobalamin is a Food and Drug Administration-approved antidote for cyanide poisoning. Cobinamide is a potential antidote that contains 2 cyanide-binding sites. To our knowledge, no study has directly compared hydroxocobalamin with cobinamide in a severe, cyanide-toxic large-animal model. Our objective is to compare the time to return of spontaneous breathing in swine with acute cyanide-induced apnea treated with intravenous hydroxocobalamin, intravenous cobinamide, or saline solution (control).

Novichoks are the latest known and most toxic class of organophosphorus chemical warfare agents (OP CWAs) to have been developed. Among the documented Novichoks, A-232 is the most toxic and most potent inhibitor of AChE, as well as the most resistant to reactivation by oximes, and thus likely the most challenging to treat. Here we characterize the intoxication following dermal exposure to the Novichok A-232 in swine, and describe a novel countermeasure against it. Our results demonstrate that percutaneous poisoning by a lethal dose of A-232 (2 mg/kg) is characterized by slow appearance and exa

Health hazards caused by heavy metals have become a great concern to the population. Lead and arsenic are one of the most important current global environmental toxicants. Their toxic manifestations are being considered caused primarily due to the imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant homeostasis and also due to a high affinity of these metals for thiol groups on functional proteins. They also interfere with a number of other body functions and are known to affect central nervous system (CNS), hematopoietic system, liver and kidneys and produce serious disorders. They produce both acut

We studied the environmental risk factors of Parkinson's disease (PD) in Finland, particularly those related to rural environment, in a prevalence material in 1992. The population numbered 196,864 people, including urban and rural areas. In this community-based study, we used a case-control method with personal investigation of the case subjects (n = 123) and matched control subjects (n = 246). Analyses were carried out by conditional logistic regression model. Case subjects had far fewer domestic animals at home during their lifetime, including cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens. The difference

The authors review the policies designed to prevent and deal with animal health emergencies which have been implemented in countries of South America. They describe the evolution of the epidemiological situation of the continent, the new arrangements for international trade in animals and products of animal origin arising from the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the consequences of such developments for livestock production in South America. Veterinary systems used to prevent and deal with emergencies in the eleven OIE Member Countries on the continent are described, togeth

As a major environmental heavy metal pollutant, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) causes irreversible damage to animals and humans. Nevertheless, how Cr(VI) exposure causes intestinal damage in broilers remains inadequately explored. This study explores Cr(VI)-induced poisoning using potassium dichromate to build a Cr(VI) poisoning model. The results indicate that Cr(VI) exposure evidently reduced the body weight and the functions of liver and kidney in broilers. Histopathological analysis revealed different degrees of structural damage in all three segments of the small intestines by Cr(VI) exposu

The C. perfringens species is associated with various environments, such as soils, sewage, and food. However, it is also a component of the gastrointestinal (GI) microflora (i.e., microbiota) of sick and healthy humans and animals. C. perfringens is linked with different systemic and enteric diseases in livestock and humans, such as gas gangrene, food poisoning, non-foodborne diarrhoea, and enterocolitis. The strains of this opportunistic pathogen are known to secrete over 20 identified toxins that are considered its principal virulence factors. C. perfringens belongs to the anaerobic bacteria
