BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in impaired motor control and coordination. Previous studies have highlighted the role of muscle synergies in coordinating motor tasks and their alterations following SCI. However, the adaptation in muscle synergy patterns at the motor unit (MU) level after SCI remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate MU synergies and clustering in the synergetic soleus and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscles and to explore how these patterns are altered in persons with SCI.
METHODS: High-density electromyography (HD-EMG) was used to record MU acti

CONTEXT: A previous study has shown that strengthening the foot muscles could decrease the risk of running-related injuries by 2.4 times in endurance runners. However, it remains unclear whether runners with stronger foot muscle have less risk of running-related injuries. The aim of this study was to compare foot-ankle characteristics between runners with and without a history of running-related injury.
DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study.
METHODS: This study enrolled 225 runners in this retrospective study. The participants filled out a questionnaire related to their history of running

This case report presents the successful management of a rare and complex open ankle fracture-dislocation known as a 'Logsplitter Injury', resulting from a high-energy traumatic event. The patient, a Chinese male in his early 20 s, sustained a severe left lower limb injury in a traffic accident. Initial clinical assessments revealed significant swelling, pain and an open fracture with extensive soft tissue damage. The patient underwent an emergency surgical intervention, involving meticulous wound debridement, internal fixation and reconstruction of the lower tibiofibular union, was performed.

Most injury risk functions (IRFs) for dynamic axial loading of the leg have been targeted toward automotive applications such as predicting injury caused by intrusion into the occupant compartment from frontal collisions. Recent focus on leg injuries in the military has led to questions about the applicability of these IRFs shorter duration, higher amplitude loading associated with underbody blast (UBB). To investigate these questions, data were collected from seven separate test series that subjected post-mortem human legs to axial impact. A force and impulse-based Weibull survival model was

OBJECTIVE: Since 2000, numerous improvements have been made to the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Incorporated (NASCAR®) driver restraint system, resulting in improved crash protection for motorsports drivers. Advancements have included seats, head and neck restraints (HNRs), seat belt restraint systems, driver helmets, and others. These enhancements have increased protection for drivers from severe crash loading. Extending protection to the driver's extremities remains challenging. Though the drivers' legs are well contained for lateral and vertical crashes, they remain large

BACKGROUND: Ankle inversion injuries are one of the most common and burdensome injuries in athletic populations. Research that prospectively identifies characteristics associated with this injury is lacking. This prospective study compared baseline anthropometric and biomechanical gait characteristics of military recruits who sustained an ankle inversion injury during training, with those who remained injury-free.
METHODS: Bilateral plantar pressure and three-dimensional lower limb kinematics were recorded in 1065 male, injury-free military recruits, during barefoot running. Injuries that occ

Cutaneous nerve injury is the most common complication following foot and ankle surgery. However, clinical studies including long-term follow-up data after cutaneous nerve injury of the foot and ankle are lacking. In the current retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical data of 279 patients who underwent foot and ankle surgery. Subjects who suffered from apparent paresthesia in the cutaneous sensory nerve area after surgery were included in the study. Patients received oral vitamin B12 and methylcobalamin. We examined final follow-up data of 17 patients, including seven with sural nerve in

BACKGROUND: Reduced balance, spasticity, contractures, muscle weakness, and motor skill levels may all contribute to mobility limitations after traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet the key physical impairments that contribute to mobility limitations remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine which physical impairments best predict mobility performance after a period of 6 months of rehabilitation.
PARTICIPANTS: Participants with TBI were selected if they were receiving therapy for mobility limitations but were able to walk without physical assistance.

BACKGROUND: The Maisonneuve fracture is a spiral fracture of the proximal third of the fibula. It occurs from violent twisting of the ankle that characteristically causes ligament damage and severe instability. Most patients complain of significant ankle pain but very little pain over the fracture. The clinical and radiographic examination is usually directed to the ankle region; and the proximal fibula is often ignored.
OBJECTIVE: The authors intend to show the ease of missing the proximal fibular fracture when the clinical examination is directed to the ankle region. They discuss the import

Slope-related differences in hindlimb movements and activation of the soleus and tibialis anterior muscles were studied during treadmill locomotion in intact rats and in rats 4 and 10 weeks following transection and surgical repair of the sciatic nerve. In intact rats, the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles were activated reciprocally at all slopes, and the overall intensity of activity in tibialis anterior and the mid-step activity in soleus increased with increasing slope. Based on the results of principal components analysis, the pattern of activation of soleus, but not of tibialis anteri

Recent studies, using two different manners of foot constraint, potted and taped, document altered failure characteristics in the human cadaver ankle under controlled external rotation of the foot. The posterior talofibular ligament (PTaFL) was commonly injured when the foot was constrained in potting material, while the frequency of deltoid ligament injury was higher for the taped foot. In this study an existing multibody computational modeling approach was validated to include the influence of foot constraint, determine the kinematics of the joint under external foot rotation, and consequent

We used MRI to study a prospective series of 95 patients with inversion injuries of the ankle and no fracture on plain radiographs. We found an incidence of bone bruises of 27%, but these made no difference to the time of return to work, limitation of walking or physical activity, or the clinical outcome scores at three months. We conclude that bone bruises have very little clinical significance after inversion injuries of the ankle.
