BACKGROUND: The relationship between maternal age (MA) and birth defects (BD) has been extensively studied while much less research, mostly with discordant results, has focused on the risk of paternal age (PA) for BD. Furthermore, no consensus has been reached on the best way to control the association of PA with MA.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk of PA increase, at 1-year intervals, for selected BD, especially controlling for the confounding effect of MA.
METHODS: The sample comprised of 27,944 liveborns presenting 1 of 18 selected isolated BD. Conditional logisti

Anorectal malformations are congenital anomalies ranging from simple perineal fistulas to complex malformations. They are usually treated inchildhood, and exceptionally in adult. We herein report the case of a 22 years aged patient and relate the diagnosis difficulties and therapeuticoptions. She consulted for anal imperforation discovered since birth. Initially, His parents refused the surgical management. It was an analimperforation with a vestibular fistula. The patient was operated by a low approach. She had a disconnection of the recto-vestibular fistula, dissection of the anal canal and a

Seventeen years have passed since the first description of the laparoscopic approach for anorectal malformation and approximately 68 articles have been published on the subject. In this review article, we aim to describe the advantages as well as the indications and contraindications of this approach when dealing with each specific type of anorectal malformation, according to what has been described in the literature and to our own experience. The ideal and undisputable indication for laparoscopy remains for cases in which the abdomen needs to be entered to repair the malformation. Only 10% of

A 4-year-old, male guinea pig in a good general condition was presented for a routine castration. Since its birth, the animal had been kept outdoors with a male sibling. At the initial examination the perineal sac was smaller compared to other intact male guinea pigs. At the caudal end of the perineal sac a small dimple was noted, that ended blindly after 3mm. The following examination under anaesthesia revealed a fistula opening 1cm caudodorsally to the anus. The skin around the opening was bulging but without any signs of inflammation. Slightly protruding and reddened mucosa was visible insi

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopy has been used for the treatment of anorectal malformations (ARMs) in an attempt to be less invasive and with the hope that it would result in a better functional outcome. There remains a significant debate about whether these expectations have been fulfilled.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with ARM for whom laparoscopy was used were retrospectively reviewed. Six were operated on primarily by the authors, and 11 cases were referred after a laparoscopic repair performed elsewhere. In addition, a literature review was performed looking for evidence of less invasiveness and

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Children with a type I/II congenital pouch colon (CPC) malformation associated with imperforate anus usually are treated by subtotal excision of the colonic pouch, tubularization of the remaining portion, and pull-through of the tubularized colon during definitive surgery. The authors report 3 patients treated in this fashion who presented 2 to 10(1/2) years later with massive redilatation of the previously tubularized colon and enterocolitis
METHODS: There were no anal strictures or malpositioning of the pulled through bowel. Contrast enema showed massive redilatation of

We treated a patient with a complex cloacal malformation: a high confluence cloaca and 2 separate short vaginas. At the age of 1 year and 2 months the rectocloacal fistula was closed because of frequent urinary infections, and the vaginas were separated from the wide urogenital sinus and anastomosed to the lower colon. At the age of 2 years and 4 months the lower colon, which had been anastomosed with the 2 vaginas, was pulled down to the perineum to serve as a lower vagina, and the sigmoid colon was pulled through to form a neorectum. She is now 7 years old and goes to school without problems

The authors report an unusual case of anal agenesis associated with rectal atresia. Such an anomaly has been reported only once before. Coincidentally, this patient also had a rarely encountered skeletal anomaly--unilateral cleft foot.

In 15 piglets with anorectal malformations (high and low anomalies) we performed angiographies of the pelvic arterial system. 3 healthy animals were used as control group. None of the animals had isolated rectal atresia which is assumed to be due to vascular disorders. In all animals we could demonstrate normal superior and inferior rectal arteries. Thus our results support the hypothesis that anorectal malformations, with the exception of isolated rectal atresia, are not associated with vascular malperfusion during embryogenesis.

PURPOSE: We review our initial cases of continent cystostomy to assess long-term functional results and complications after a minimum of 15 years of followup.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1976 and 1984, 23 continent cystostomies were performed on 15 boys and 8 girls with neuropathic bladders. Mean patient age at surgery was 8 years and 4 months (range 3 to 16) and mean followup was 20 years (range 15 to 23). The neurological lesions were due to 21 myelomeningocele (2 associated with an imperforated anus in 21 cases), spinal neuroblastoma in 1 and complex genitourinary malformation associate
