BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are dural diverticula with liquid content similar to cerebrospinal fluid, with 1% occurring in the spinal cord. They locate mainly in the dorsal region of the thoracic spine, and are unusual causes of spinal cord compression.
CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a previously healthy 15-year-old boy, with a 20-month history of spastic paraparesis that started apparently after epidural block for ankle osteosynthesis. There was decreased sensitivity and strength of the pelvic limbs and gradually presented with anaesthesia from T12 to L4 dermatomes, L5 and S1 bilate

Horner syndrome (HS) results from the interruption of sympathic pathway, and the patients have a group of signs including miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, and anhydrosis. While HS is mainly caused by cervical sympathetic nerve injury such as sympathetic chain tumor, we report here a HS case caused by a thoracolumbar arachnoid cyst. Imageological examination showed the cyst existed in spinal canal from the T11 to L3 level, which was further confirmed by operation. The tumor attacked the lateral margin of intervertebral foramen at certain stages. In MRI scan, no abnormality was found in the patient

Syringomyelia is a not infrequent pathology that develops related to changes in cerebrospinal fluid dynamics due to many etiological factors. The development of syringomyelia through a spinal arachnoid cyst is quite rare and has been defined in only 31 cases in the literature. A case due to thoracic epidural lipomatosis has also been reported. There have been no previous reports of thoracic region epidural lipomatosis with underlying arachnoid cyst and syringomyelia as in our case. We present a 27-year-old patient who developed thoracic arachnoid cyst and underlying syringomyelia because of th

INTRODUCTION: Scalloping sacral arachnoid cyst though a rare condition, should be suspected in cases of persistent perianal pain without any obvious urological or anorectal pathology. Such difficult cases justify ordering an M.R.I of spine as plain X-Rays and clinical examination may come out to be inconclusive. X-ray in later stages may show changes corresponding to scalloping of bone due pressure effect of cyst on surrounding tissue. Diagnosis may further be confirmed by doing contrast MRI which differentiates arachnoid cyst from other intradural and extradural pathologies. Though anatomical

Deficits in the occipital cortex have varying consequences among mammalian species. Such variations are indicative of evolutionary transitions in the striate cortical contribution to visually guided behavior. However, little is known about the role of the striate cortex in visually guided behavior in chimpanzees due to ethical concerns about invasive experiments and methodological limitations such as the inability to monitor gaze movements. We had the opportunity to study the behavioral consequences of a deficit in the occipital cortex in a chimpanzee with a naturally occurring arachnoid cyst

We report here the case of a suprasellar cystic germ cell tumor (GCT) initially diagnosed as an arachnoid cyst. A 10-year-old boy experienced headache, dizziness, and diplopia, and was shown to have an approximately 2 cm suprasellar cyst. Two months after endoscopic third ventriculostomy was performed, a 5-6 cm cystic mass with an internal enhancing component was observed in the suprasellar cistern. Serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels were slightly increased in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (55 and 162 IU/L, respectively) but were strikingly elevated in the cystic fluid (14,040 IU/L)

Arachnoid cyst is a common congenital anomaly in the pediatric population. The cysts are often asymptomatic, but they can cause headache and other symptoms. Occasionally a cyst may rupture after head trauma producing a subdural hematoma. The authors present the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented after a week of progressive and severe back pain radiating to the back of his thighs. Imaging revealed a spinal subdural blood collection at the L4-S1 level. This finding prompted further cephalad imaging of the spine and the brain, which revealed a sylvian fissure arachnoid cyst with intracystic

Subdural effusions are uncommon but known complications of arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa. They mainly occur after minor head traumas in young patients. Here, we report eight cases of arachnoid cyst of the middle cranial fossa associated with subdural hematoma in five cases and hygroma in three cases. Major symptoms are signs of raised intracranial pressure. CT scan and MRI showed the cyst and the subdural effusion. An excellent therapeutic result was achieved with evacuation of the subdural fluid via burr holes in the five cases of subdural hematoma while in the two cases of hygr

OBJECT: A precise understanding of the ambient cistern and its associated arachnoid membranes is helpful for accessing perimesencephalic lesions. However, few studies of the arachnoid membranes related to the ambient cistern have been published, and, additionally, some aspects of the ambient cistern also require further examination. The goal of this study was to reinvestigate and expound on the anatomical features of the cistern and membranes.
METHODS: The ambient cisterns and its associated arachnoid membranes were examined in 20 adult cadaveric brains using an operative microscope.

INTRODUCTION: When performing in situ harvesting of cranial bone grafts, there is a risk of entering the pericranial-intracranial venous system, either directly or indirectly through the arachnoid foveolae. The aims of this study were to investigate the size and location of arachnoid foveolae and to provide an anatomic road map to prevent penetrating these structures.
METHODS: Three hundred dry skulls were selected from the Hamann-Todd osteological collection (Cleveland, OH); skulls were collected between 1912 and 1938. Our study skulls were limited to whites or African American adults. Exclu

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the morphological characteristics and pathological significance of arachnoid cysts confined to the internal auditory canal or facial nerve canal.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
SUBJECTS: Three patients' cases were reviewed, and temporal bone sections examined histologically.
RESULTS: In this series, three intracanalicular arachnoid cysts were found in the internal auditory canal and one in the facial nerve canal. All lesions consisted of distinct, space-occupying cysts with a sharp boundary with surrounding tissues. They were thin-walled and compressed the surro

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of arachnoid cysts remains under debate. Although many authors favor endoscopic techniques, others attribute a higher recurrence rate to the endoscope.
OBJECTIVE: The authors report their experience with endoscopic procedures for arachnoid cyst.
METHODS: All pure endoscopic procedures for arachnoid cysts performed by the authors were analyzed. Particular reference was given to surgical complications and patient outcome in relation to cyst location and endoscopic technique.
RESULTS: Sixty-six endoscopic procedures were performed in 61 patients (mean age, 28 yea

BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus results from inadequate passage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from its point of production within the cerebral ventricles to its point of absorption into systemic circulation.
AIMS: The objective of this study was to investigate the disorders of CSF absorption by arachnoid villi during the different phases of hydrocephalus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Silicone oil was injected into the fourth ventricle of 15 canines as an experimental group. Saline solution (0.9% NaCl) was injected in another nine canines as a control group. In order to block CSF transport through the cri

The objective of this study was to analyze the association of cerebellar tonsillar descent and syringomyelia in patients with posterior fossa arachnoid cysts. We reviewed the medical records of ten patients (mean, age 33; range, 24-49 years) diagnosed with posterior fossa arachnoid cyst and tonsillar descent. Symptoms evolved over a mean of 12 months (range, 6 months to 3 years). Syringomyelia was present in six cases. Six patients underwent a suboccipital craniectomy, three cases underwent an additional C1 laminectomy, and a further case had a limited craniectomy and tonsillar reduction. Thre

Retroclival arachnoid cysts are rarely reported. A 40-year-old woman had a sudden onset of occipitocervical pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a cystic mass lesion located in the retroclival region and complicated with intracystic haemorrhage. At operation, by a right lateral suboccipital approach, an old, intracystic haemorrhage was aspirated and the cyst wall removed totally. This report demonstrated the second case of retroclival cyst presenting with symptomatic spontaneous intracystic haemorrhage.

We report magnetic resonance (MR), computed tomography (CT) and angiographic imaging of an unusual giant arachnoid granulation 7(GAG) in the superior sagittal sinus in a man with headache and vertigo. Intrasinus pressure measurements revealed a significant pressure gradient across the lesion. MR imaging is useful to identify GAG and dural sinus thrombosis, whereas dural sinus pressure measurement in certain cases of GAGs can be used to evaluate the lesion as the cause of the patient's symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The management of Sylvian arachnoid cysts in children is still a matter of debate. Diagnosis is often incidental, and symptoms are frequently aspecific in symptomatic cases. Suggested diagnostic investigation results have been often unclear. Surgical treatment is also controversial, pure, and assisted endoscopic cyst marsupialization having entered in the traditional debate between craniotomic and shunting approach
PURPOSE: The objective of the present study was to survey if (and, eventually, which) agreement points do actually exist between internationally recognized pediatric ne

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary cysts are a rare cause of spinal cord compression. We present a case with slowly progressive radicular pain and gait disorder over several years, due to medullary compression by a giant cervico-thoracic arachnoid cyst.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man presented with progressive pain irradiating from the lower back to the waist and both legs over a period of 2 years. Neurological examination revealed a decreased sensation for pain, vibration, and proprioception below T7, without muscle weakness. Reflexes were increased in both lower extremities, with bilater
