Common and uncommon neuroimaging manifestations of ataxia: an illustrated guide for the trainee radiologist. Part 2 - neoplastic, congenital, degenerative, and hereditary diseases.

Ataxia is defined as a lack of coordination of voluntary movement, caused by a variety of factors. Ataxia can be classified by the age at onset and type (chronic or acute). The causative lesions involve the cerebellum and cerebellar connections. The correct, appropriate use of neuroimaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, can make the diagnosis relatively straightforward and facilitate implementation of the appropriate clinical management. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to describe the imaging findings of ataxia, based on cases obtained from the archives of a tertiary care hos…

Identification of Fungal Pathogens in Tissue Samples from Patients with Proven Invasive Infection by Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization.

Identification of fungal pathogens in clinical samples by hybridization with short oligonucleotide probes is increasingly used in the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections. Rapid and specific fungal identification has been documented in different diagnostic settings allowing for specific patient management. Identification of fungal pathogens in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples appears to be rewarding as these materials are stored in pathology archives offering an insight into the etiology of deep fungal infections that is often not achieved by non-molecular tests. In contrast…

Hypothesis: Is heroin a 'barrier' against cancer? A retrospective analysis of heroin-addicted individuals untreated for opioid dependence between 2001-2010.

PURPOSE: The findings of previous studies attracted our interest in searching and defining the percentage of deaths from cancer in 'heroin regular addicts' i.e. those who had never stopped taking the drug since they started. METHODS: The archives of the Greek Reitox Focal Point of the years 2001 to 2010 were retrospectively searched, focusing on the number of deaths from cancer of the regular heroin addicts. RESULTS: The records from 2,321 regular heroin addicts showed that none of them died from cancer. It seems that heroin might act as a "barrier" against cancer. CONCLUSION: Further studi…

Theories about the propagation of yellow fever: the scientific debate in the São Paulo press between 1895 and 1903.

This article describes the debate over theories about the propagation of yellow fever in the São Paulo press. Our time span was defined as the period between 1895 and 1903, a time that saw high indices of the disease in Brazil. Documentary research involved mass circulation newspapers in São Paulo and medical journals of the period. The empirical data was collected from the Public Archives of the State of São Paulo and from the library of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública at Universidade de São Paulo. It was observed a clash between theories as to the propagation of yellow fever that revealed a s…

EPSTEIN -BARR VIRUS ASSOCIATION WITH MALIGNANT LYMPHOMA SUBGROUPS IN ZARIA, NIGERIA.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is said to infect more than 90% of humans worldwide with latent infection for life. A recognized carcinogen, EBV is linked to malignant lymphoma (ML) subtypes of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL), plasmablastic lymphoma, diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). We report the association of EBV with ML in a segment of our patient population. Paraffin blocks from the archives of ABUTH, Zaria were used to construct tissue microarray sections stained using 30 monoclonal antibodies for common Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma/ Hodgkin's lymphoma antigen and chromogenic i…

The "cholera cloud" in the nineteenth-century "British World": history of an object-without-an-essence.

The "cholera cloud" is one of the most persistent presences in the archives of nineteenth-century cholera in the "British World." Yet it has seldom received anything more than a passing acknowledgment from historians of cholera. Tracing the history of the cholera cloud as an object promises to open up a new dimension of the historically contingent experience of cholera, as well as make a significant contribution to the emergent literature on "thing theory." By conceptualizing the cholera cloud as an object-without-an-essence, this article demonstrates how global cholera pandemics in the ninete…

Little Hans and Freud's self-analysis: a biographical view of clinical theory in the making.

For nearly a century, Freud's "Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-year-old Boy" has been read mainly--if often critically--with Freud's conscious aim in mind: providing evidence for the central importance of oedipal conflict. Material recently released by the Freud Archives casts new light on Freud's treatment of Hans's mother, Olga Graf (nee Hönig)--which began at the height of his self-analysis in 1897--and of Hans himself. Read in the enriched context of new information from Eissler's interviews with Max Graf and Herbert Graf, two texts--Freud's 1897 letters to Fliess and the 1909 case history-…

Mondays without dread: the Trade Union response to byssinosis in the Lancashire cotton industry in the twentieth century.

Trade unions have often been criticized for their failure to address occupational health issues. This article explores their response to byssinosis-a chronic respiratory disease caused by exposure to cotton dust that was rife in the Lancashire cotton industry in the early nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Using the archives of the cardroom and spinning unions, it is demonstrated that trade union efforts to combat byssinosis began before the First World War and were sustained for over 70 years. During that period, byssinosis became a recognized medical condition and a compensatable disease, d…

From France to Rijeka: The Course and Legacy of First Renal Transplantation in Yugoslavia.

The article analyses the course and legacy of the first successful kidney transplantation in socialist Yugoslavia, performed in Rijeka on 30 January 1971 under the leadership of Prof. Vinko Frančišković. It is based on a combination of secondary literature, newspaper sources, and limited archival documents, thereby approaching this medical event from a historiographical perspective as well. Particular emphasis is placed on the preparations of the Rijeka medical team, which involved international cooperation, especially with France. The procedure itself, carried out as a kidney transplant from

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes defined by common translocations: utility of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in a case-control study.

We used fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays to identify t(14;18) translocations in archival paraffin-embedded tumor sections from non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases enrolled in a population-based study. t(14;18) was identified in 54% of 152 cases, including 39% of diffuse large cell lymphomas (26 of 66 cases) and 84% of follicular lymphomas (36 of 43 cases). Eighty-seven percent of t(14;18)-positive cases and 57% of t(14;18)-negative cases expressed bcl-2. FISH assays detected twice as many t(14;18)-positive follicular lymphomas as PCR assays. Overall, study findings support the use

In situ polymerase chain reaction demonstration of JC virus in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, including an index case.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease that is caused by JC papovavirus. The virus can be demonstrated in brains with PML using a variety of techniques. In situ polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a new method that combines the sensitivity of PCR with the histological localization of in situ hybridization. We here show that in situ PCR can detect JC virus in archival tissue sections of 3 cases of PML, including 1 of the original cases described in 1958 and 1 case that was fixed in formalin for 7 weeks. JC virus DNA was amplified directly on tissue and demons

Epidemiological characteristics and public health responses against measles in the Ottoman empire and the early Turkish Republic.

BACKGROUND: Measles is an infectious disease that affects mostly children. It is caused by the measles morbillivirus, which can be spread through inhalation and direct contact with the patient. There are insufficient literary documents on the prevalence of measles in the Ottoman Empire; its seasonal variation, the public health responses and epidemiological changes it caused. METHODS: This study reviews archival documents from the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic Archives, alongside relevant literature, to investigate measles cases, mortality patterns, seasonal distribution and public …

Exercises in anatomy: tetralogy of Fallot.

It is axiomatic that those performing surgery on the congenitally malformed heart require a thorough knowledge of the lesions they will be called upon to correct. The necessary anatomical knowledge is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain at first hand, since relatively few centres now hold archives of specimens obtained in an appropriately legal fashion from the patients unfortunately dying in previous years. One centre with such an archive is Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, known previously as Chicago Memorial Children's Hospital. The archive was established by Fa…

Comparative Evaluation of Adaptive Focused Acoustics- and SP3-Based Workflows for Deep Proteomic Profiling of 30-Year-Old Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissues.

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues represent a vast archive for translational research that offers access to specimens with clinical outcomes. However, formalin-induced crosslinking hinders efficient protein extraction and limits proteomic applications. We systematically compared three protein extraction workflows, adaptive focused acoustics (AFA) with Covaris buffer (AFA/Covaris-b), AFA with SDS buffer (AFA/SDS-b), and SDS-based lysis followed by SP3 clean-up and digestion (SP3/SDS-b), using hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues archived for over 30 years. Benchmarking was perfo

Pathological Findings in Two Events of Illegal Hunting of Atlantic Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) from the Canary Islands.

This study characterizes the pathological findings in Atlantic Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) chicks from the Canary Islands associated with illegal hunting cases. A retrospective analysis of necropsy archives, including imaging techniques (X-rays and computed tomography) and histopathological examinations, was conducted on twenty juvenile shearwaters. The study revealed significant cranioencephalic trauma as the primary cause of death in both poaching events. Differences in the methods used by the perpetrators were noted, with variations in skull fractures and associated injuries. T…

Breaking the link between sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium leakage and mitochondria to counteract unloading-induced muscle atrophy.

In muscle fibers, unloading and disuse cause an increase in resting calcium concentrations in the cytosol and mitochondrial matrix. S107, a stabilizer of the Ryanodine Receptor calcium channel (RyR), blocks the leakage from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and lowers mitochondrial calcium concentrations without altering cytosolic calcium levels, as demonstrated in a recent article published in Pflugers Archives (Sidorenko et al. 2025). This finding is important as it shows that, even at rest, calcium entry into the mitochondria is influenced by RyR leakage, thanks to the mitochondria unique location…

[Cholera epidemic in Brescia in 1836].

Cholera first made its appearance in Italy in 1836. According to reports of the time the consequences were catastrophic: both the number of the people falling ill and the incidence of mortality were high. On the basis of extensive documentation from various archives, the disease appears to have been known in its clinical aspect but its aetiology remained obscure. Hence physicians were powerless to combat such a scourge. The sense of unease and confusion that accompanied the evolution of these sad events drove the population to the use of religious practices of various kinds. It is still possib…
