Naming and verbal memory skills in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Reading Disability.

Research suggests that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Reading Disability (RD) can be differentiated based on their performance on measures of naming and verbal memory. It is not known whether this same pattern characterizes adults with these disorders. In this study, adults with and without ADHD and RD were compared on naming and verbal memory abilities. Results did not support the hypothesis that adults with ADHD and RD are significantly different from each other, or from a contrast group, on naming and verbal memory measures after controlling for Full-Scale

Rapid naming deficits in children and adolescents with reading disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Seventy-one children in three groups (reading disabilities, ADHD without reading disabilities, and normal controls) were compared on their ability to rapidly name colors, letters, numbers, and objects (RAN Tasks) and alternating letters/numbers and letters/numbers/colors (RAS tasks). Children with reading disabilities were found to be slower on letter- and number-naming tasks and made more errors on all tasks than controls or children with ADHD. There was an age effect for the RAN/RAS tasks, with younger children with reading disabilities performing more poorly on all tasks, while the older ch

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in males with paraphilias and paraphilia-related disorders: a comorbidity study.

BACKGROUND: We describe a study of DSM-III-R Axis I diagnoses of lifetime comorbid nonsexual disorders in 60 males with paraphilias (PAs; N = 42) and nonparaphilic forms of sexual impulsivity-designated paraphilia-related disorders (PRD; N = 18). METHOD: Subjects completed a semistructured intake questionnaire and sexual inventories, the Inventory to Diagnose Depression, and the Wender Utah Retrospective Scale for the diagnosis of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The lifetime prevalence of Axis I diagnoses of both sexual and nonsexual disorders was ascertained from t

A controlled trial of deprenyl in children with Tourette's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We conducted a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study to assess the efficacy of deprenyl for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents with comorbid Tourette's syndrome (TS). Twenty-four subjects (21 boys, 3 girls; mean age 12 years) were enrolled at two sites (University of Rochester and Baylor College of Medicine). The design included two 8-week treatment periods separated by a 6-week washout period. The primary outcome measures for ADHD and tic severity were total scores on the DuPaul Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Scale (DADHS) and the Yale Globa

Positive Parenting is Associated With Higher Self-reported Resilience in Children With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether positive parenting is associated with higher self-report resilience in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) after controlling for other possible related factors. METHOD: After providing informed consent, children with ADHD aged 7 to 11 years completed the Resilience Scale for Children (RS10), and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years completed the 14-item Resilience Scale (RS14). Higher resilience was defined as a resilience score above the mean score minus 1 SD (> mean - 1SD) for comparable age groups provided in the manuals. Children with

Serum vitamins and microelements levels and their association with children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. The impact of environmental factors on ADHD is very important. Therefore, we analyzed and measured the correlation between the serum vitamin and microelement levels of Chinese children and the incidence rate of ADHD, hoping to provide some guidance for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. METHODS: 128 children (69 boys and 59 girls, with an average age of 9.38 ± 2.5 years) were diagnosed with ADHD. In addition, 133 healthy children were recruited as the h

Activation Syndrome in a Patient With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Treated With Atomoxetine: A Case Report.

"Activation syndrome" represents a cluster of symptoms of excessive emotional arousal or behavioral activation, which emerges after the first few weeks of antidepressant treatment or a dose increase and resolves with dose reduction or cessation of treatment. It was reported after treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor group of agents, but no case of activation syndrome has been reported with the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor group. Atomoxetine is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and nonstimulant and is used to manage symptom

Emotional lability and irritability have specific associations with symptomatology in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Irritability and emotional lability have been shown to be severity and impairment factors in community and clinical sample studies and are frequent comorbid features of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, while irritability and emotional lability seem to be closely linked, the differential effect of these two features has received little attention. This study assessed the distinct associations of irritability and emotional lability on symptomatology in children with ADHD. One hundred and eight children diagnosed with ADHD participated in the study. Children were rated by

Effects of melatonin in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with sleep disorders after methylphenidate treatment.

PURPOSE: Methylphenidate (MPH), the first-line medication in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is associated with increased risk of sleep disorders. Melatonin has both hypnotic and chronobiotic properties that influence circadian rhythm sleep disorders. This study explores the effectiveness of melatonin in children with ADHD who developed sleep problems after starting MPH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study, based on a clinical database, included 74 children (69 males, mean age 11.6±2.2 years) naturalistically treated with MPH (mean dosage 33.5±13.5 mg/d). The sever

Serum zinc correlates with parent- and teacher- rated inattention in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship of zinc nutrition to the severity of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a middle-class American sample with well-diagnosed ADHD. Previous reports of zinc in ADHD, including two positive clinical trials of supplementation, have come mainly from countries and cultures with different diets and/or socioeconomic realities. METHOD: Children 5-10 years of age with DISC- and clinician-diagnosed ADHD had serum zinc determinations and parent and teacher ratings of ADHD symptoms. Zinc levels were correlated (Pearso

[Evaluation of sympathetic skin response in patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder presenting with comorbid disorders].

We studied sympathetic skin response (SSR) to visual emotional stimuli in two children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and nine healthy controls, and correlated them with comorbid disorders. They were diagnosed as having conduct disorder at administration. Two years after interventions of medical care, counseling and education, they were improving in behavior, one with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and another without ODD at this study. SSR were evoked in the patient without ODD (a 10-year-old boy), but not in the patient with ODD (a 12-year-old boy). These findings

Disorder-specific grey matter deficits in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder relative to autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are two common childhood disorders that exhibit genetic and behavioural overlap and have abnormalities in similar brain systems, in particular in frontal and cerebellar regions. This study compared the two neurodevelopmental disorders to investigate shared and disorder-specific structural brain abnormalities. METHOD: Forty-four predominantly medication-naïve male adolescents with ADHD, 19 medication-naïve male adolescents with ASD and 33 age-matched healthy male controls were scanned using high-reso

Auditory temporal processing in children with specific reading disability with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with specific reading disability (RD) will exhibit a deficit in the perception of auditory temporal cues in nonspeech stimuli. Tasks assessing perception of auditory temporal and nontemporal cues were administered to children with (a) RD without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (RD/no-ADHD, n = 40), (b) ADHD alone (ADHD/no-RD, n = 33), (c) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD, n = 36), and (d) no impairment (NI, n = 41). The presence of RD was associated with a specific deficit in detection of a tone onset time asynchrony, but no reductio

Effects of music-based occupational therapy activities on attention executive functions in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive, motor, sensory, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. This disorder may lead to impairments in various executive functions, such as sustained attention, planning and organizing, and impulse control. Occupational therapy interventions offer strategies aimed at enhancing attention, executive functions, and motor skills in individuals with ADHD, while also providing guidance and support to caregivers throughout the process. Caregivers of children with ADHD play

Association of Preterm Birth With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-Like and Wider-Ranging Neurophysiological Impairments of Attention and Inhibition.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth has been associated with an increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like symptoms and cognitive impairments similar to those seen in ADHD, including attention and inhibitory control difficulties. Yet data on direct comparisons across ADHD and preterm birth on cognitive-neurophysiological measures are limited. METHOD: We directly compared 186 preterm-born adolescents to 69 term-born adolescents with ADHD and 135 term-born controls on cognitive-performance and event-related potential measures associated with attentional and inhibitory processin

Therapeutic Decisions and Implications in Patients With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Versus Bipolar Disorder: Key Insights for Clinicians.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) are conditions that often manifest in childhood and can persist into adulthood. Due to the similarities in their clinical presentations, it is crucial for clinicians to have a thorough understanding of these disorders. Accurate differentiation of symptoms is essential for making precise diagnoses, as this directly influences treatment decisions and affects the overall functioning and quality of life of those impacted. Considered here is the case of a teenage male who initially presented with impulsivity and was
