Ambient intelligence platforms and new frontiers in surgical safety.

The operating room is a high-risk, high-entropy environment, prone to human error and preventable adverse events. Drawing on lessons from high-reliability organizations such as the aviation industry, Aimbient (formerly Operating Room Black Box by Surgical Safety Technologies, New York, NY) collects continuous, multimodal audiovisual and physiologic data capture to deepen our understanding of surgical safety. This platform has demonstrated improvements in patient safety domains across several metrics, including ground-truth benchmarking of checklist adherence, video-based multidisciplinary revi…

Task load and phase relevance modulate primary flight display change blindness: evidence from flight simulator, eye-tracking, and fNIRS.

Change blindness (CB) during Primary Flight Display (PFD) monitoring threatens aviation safety, yet the roles of flight phase and parameter relevance remain unclear. This study examined cognitive-neural correlates of PFD change blindness in experienced commercial pilots. Experiment 1 (N = 14) found change location had no influence on detection performance but demonstrated a three‑way interaction among task load, flight phase and parameter type. Under high load, pilots detected attitude and descent rate more accurately during landing, and speed and altitude more accurately during cruise. Experi…

Effects of Printing Orientation on the Tensile, Thermophysical, Smoke Density, and Toxicity Properties of Ultem® 9085.

Despite the impressive properties of additively manufactured products, their inherent anisotropy is a crucial challenge for polymeric parts … nting orientation. The smoke density and toxicity test results proved that Ultem 9085 complies with aviation safety standards. Smoke density tests showed that all samples, regardless of print orientation or thickness, stayed well below the regulatory limit, making them suitable for aircraft interiors.

A Comprehensive Review of Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolics to Aromatics.

Single-ring aromatic compounds including BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene) serve as essential building blocks for high-performance fuels and specialty chemicals, with extensive applications spanning polymer synthesis, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and aviation fuel formulation. Current industrial production predominantly relies on non-renewable petrochemical feedstocks, posing the dual challenges of resource depletion and environmental sustainability. The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic substrates emerges as a technologically viable pathway for sustainable aromatic h…

Helicopter Air Transport of Newborns With Respiratory Distress: Pitfalls, Challenges, and Solutions for Safe Neonatal Airlifting.

Transporting critically ill neonates by helicopter is complex and requires planning, coordination, and management. Neonates are vulnerable to stress at altitude and during rotary-wing transport. Environmental stressors can compromise clinical stability and hinder care. Successful transport begins with stabilization, particularly in cases of respiratory distress. Specialized neonatal transport systems are essential. They should be equipped with continuous physiological monitoring and mechanical support tools that maintain homeostasis throughout the flight. Aviation dynamics are also a contribut…

Temporally Correlated Deep Learning-Based Horizontal Wind-Speed Prediction.

Wind speed affects aviation performance, clean energy production, and other applications. By accurately predicting wind speed, operational delays and accidents can be avoided, while the efficiency of wind energy production can also be increased. This paper initially overviews the definition, characteristics, sensors capable of measuring the feature, and the relationship between this feature and wind speed for all Quality Indicators (QIs). Subsequently, the feature importance of each QI relevant to wind-speed prediction is assessed, and all QIs are employed to predict horizontal wind speed. In …

Remote Tower Air Traffic Controller Multimodal Fatigue Detection.

Remote tower (rTWR) operations are reshaping air traffic control but introduce significant human-factor risks, notably cognitive fatigue induced by prolonged screen-based visual surveillance. To mitigate these risks in a safety-critical domain where missed detections can be catastrophic, we propose a non-intrusive, multimodal fatigue detection framework fusing ocular and cardiac signals. A high-fidelity simulation study with 36 controllers was conducted to collect eye-tracking and electrocardiogram (ECG) data, from which a 12-dimensional feature vector-integrating gaze entropy and heart rate v

Injury severity and seating position in accidents with German EMS helicopters.

INTRODUCTION: Accident rates and fatality rates for Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) missions have been investigated recently, but none of these studies considered the influence of the seating position in the helicopter. The aim of the present descriptive and observational study was to analyze injury severity depending on the seating position during HEMS accidents in Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from the German Federal Agency for Flight Accident Investigation was gathered for a period of 40 years (from 1970 to 2009). The seating position in the aircraft during the accident a

A case of active tuberculosis in a cabin crew: the results of contact tracing.

INTRODUCTION: Transmission of communicable diseases on board aircraft is of considerable concern for passengers and aircrew. Previously published estimates of risk of tuberculosis (TB) transmission have been highly variable. Furthermore, very few studies have been published for active TB in aircrew. METHODS: The public health authorities advised the Medical Advisor of an airline that a cabin crewmember had been diagnosed with active TB. Contact tracing was done for the cabin crew who worked with the index case for more than 8 h. Cabin crewmembers were divided in two groups according to their

Arrhythmias observed during high-G training: proposed training safety criterion.

INTRODUCTION: Most arrhythmias during centrifuge training are physiological responses to high +Gz stress. However, potentially dangerous arrhythmias occasionally occur during centrifuge training. We reviewed all arrhythmias recorded during the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) centrifuge training from April 2001 to March 2003, and developed a criterion for suspending G-training based on observed arrhythmias. METHOD: There were 195 male fighter pilots who received high-G centrifuge training monitored with electrocardiographs (ECGs). We evaluated types and occurrences of all arrhythmias duri

Was disease involved in the decimation of Guam's avifauna?

Between 1982 and 1986, 402 (290 live, 112 dead) exotic, migrant or native resident birds on Guam were surveyed for disease-causing agents to determine the role of disease in the decline of native forest bird populations on Guam. Traumatic injury, primarily from collisions with motor vehicles and predation, was the most prevalent (46%) cause of death. Thirty-eight percent of the carcasses examined were in poor body condition largely as a result of inadequate nutrition in captive native birds and poultry and adipose exhaustion in errant migrants. A variety of commensal or opportunistic bacteria,

Vection and simulator sickness.

Simulator sickness has been identified as a form of motion sickness in which users of simulators exhibit symptoms characteristic of true motion sickness. In a fixed-base simulator, visual and vestibular sources of information specifying dynamic orientation are in conflict to the extent that the optical flow pattern viewed by the pilot creates a compelling illusion of self-motion, which is not corroborated by the inertial forces transmitted through the vestibular sense organs. Visually induced illusory self-motion is known as vection, and a strict interpretation of sensory conflict theory of mo

[Psychogenic impaired consciousness].

Until not too long ago, psychogenic trance was considered to be a 'conversion hysteria'. But clinical syndromes and personality disorders are now seen as separate entities; therefore, psychogenic trance is part of the so-called 'dissociative disorders'. Here, the integrative functions of the psyche are reduced and control of memory, identity, sensoric and motoric functions are impaired. As a consequence, certain disorders are observed, which have common characteristics, such as onset (psychogenic trauma), course (initial panic or belle indifference) and psychodynamics (repression of an unbeara

Airport preparedness for mass disaster: a proposed schematic plan.

With the growth in the size of airplanes and the number of flights, the potential impact on airports of airplane-related disasters involving large numbers of people is increasing. Such disasters may result from accidents or terrorist activities. Although the development of plans for coping with such situations is a prerequisite to full certification of airports by the FAA, exercising the plans through disaster drills is only a recommendation. This has resulted in a situation where only a small minority of the fully certified airports are actually ready to handle a major disaster. Presented in
