Status of natural disaster victims' health and recovery 1 and 3 years later.

Bereaved, property loss, and control groups (N = 155) studied 11 months following the 1980 volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens were recontacted 35 months postdisaster to test the hypotheses that the greater the loss experienced, the higher the stress, and the poorer the health. In general, the hypotheses were supported. Even though mental distress decreased between the two data collection periods, the mental health of the bereaved group remained poorer than both the property loss and control groups. At 3 years postdisaster, only 4% of the study participants reported complete recovery from disa

Supporting a Different Type of Death: Experiences of Family Members of Recipients of Medical Assistance in Dying.

AIM: To explore the experiences of family members when a relative or close person receives medical assistance in dying. DESIGN: Guided by I … tance in dying did not necessarily correspond to emotional preparedness for the death or subsequent bereavement. CONCLUSION: Medical assistance in dying is experienced not only as an individual decision but also as a relational process with emotional, practical and moral implications for family members. Finding solace in the ocean.

This is a narrative essay about what the ocean taught me about my personal grief, lessons I, as surprisingly as it may seem, never learned through advanced training in bereavement support.

Effects of an internet-delivered behavioral self-monitoring intervention on depressive symptoms in older widowed adults: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Late-life bereavement triggers substantial change to surviving spouses' routine health behaviors. Behavioral self-monitoring interventions are promising tools for promoting change across multiple behavioral domains, yet little is known about their efficacy in the spousal bereavement period. This trial evaluated the efficacy of an internet-delivered behavioral self-monitoring intervention for reducing depressive symptoms in older widowed adults. METHOD: We conducted an assessor-blind randomized controlled trial at a single site in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from January 2020 to Augus…

A population study of prolonged grief in refugees.

AIMS: Despite the frequency that refugees suffer bereavement, there is a dearth of research into the prevalence and predictors of problematic grief reactions in refugees. To address this gap, this study reports a nationally representative population-based study of refugees to determine the prevalence of probable prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and its associated problems. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 and February 2014. The current data were collected in…

Prenatal Exposure to Severe Stress and the Risk of Heart Failure Up to Middle-Age.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress is a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but its association with heart failure (HF) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether prenatal stress, defined as maternal bereavement, was associated with HF risk up to middle-age. METHODS: This cohort study included 6,758,560 live singleton births from the Danish (1973-2016) and the Swedish (1973-2014) Medical Birth Registers. The authors retrieved information on death of the mothers' close family members (partner, older children, parents, and siblings) and offspring's HF (…

Risk factors for complicated grief in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Older adults grieving the death of a spouse have been found to have a higher risk of complicated grief compared with younger adults. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to find out whether personal characteristics of the patient and the bereaved partner, or characteristics of the patient's illness, end-of-life care, and the nature of death are risk factors for complicated grief in older adults. METHODS: We performed a nested case-control study within the Rotterdam Study. We selected 100 couples of which one person had deceased and the other person experienced "complicated grief,"

The mental health impact of stillbirth, neonatal death or SIDS: prevalence and patterns of distress among mothers.

Although stressful events have long been implicated in the onset of psychological disorder, available data suggest that the majority of individuals appear to escape serious impairment even following highly traumatic events. Related to this is the question of chronicity and whether those who do become impaired develop mental health problems of an ongoing nature. This paper documents the psychological adjustment of 194 women following a highly stressful event-the death of an infant due to stillbirth, neonatal death or SIDS. Anxiety and depression were measured on four occasions-at 2, 8, 15 and 3

Aging widows and widowers: are there mental health differences?

Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin resigned shortly after the death of his wife. A classic portrait of the grieving widower, his despondency did not surprise mental health professionals. One psychiatrist explained that "Women take bereavement better than men because the widow keeps her domain" while the widower tends to become disoriented. This article examines the perception that men, specifically aging men, are more emotionally distressed than aging women by their spouse's death. A literature review reveals little evidence from behavioral or psychological studies to support the perception…

Twin loss: the annual convention / twin research reviews: childhood empathy; hormone replacement therapy and skeletal muscle; multiple birth conception in older women / twins in the media: twins with kidney disease; a pair of poets; the other twins in the metrodome.

Loss of a twin has been largely overlooked by bereavement counselors and clinicians. This particular type of loss is also poorly understood among the public. Consequently, some bereaved twins have established a unique organization, Twinless Twins Support Group International, for the purpose of sharing this traumatic life experience with one another. The present article reviews events from the annual convention of Twinless Twins, held in July 2009, in Denver, Colorado. Selected findings from research on twin loss are also presented. Next, twin research concerned with the origins and implication…

Mourner's Little Helper: The Use of Psychotropics in the Treatment of Grief-Related Distress From Opium to Opioid Antagonists.

The value of diagnosing the pathologically bereaved, as affected by a distinct disorder from depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, has long been debated by clinicians and scholars alike. Disputes continue over whether a specific diagnosis would help those struggling after loss, even after prolonged grief disorder gained official status in 2022 as a condition recognized and defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This paper examines how different medical conceptualizations of grief have helped shape the development and use of pharmaceutical interv

Long-Term Reactions to the Loss of a Close Friend in an Extreme Terror Incident.

This article presents results from one of the first longitudinal studies exploring the effects of losing a close friend to traumatic death, focusing on complicated grief over time and how this is affected by avoidant behavior and rumination about the loss. The sample consists of 88 persons (76% women and 24% men, mean age = 21) who lost a close friend in the Utøya killings in Norway on July 22, 2011.Quantitative data were collected at three time-points; 18, 28, and 40 months postloss. Main findings are that bereaved friends are heavily impacted by the loss and their grief reactions are affecte

The Intergenerational Transmission of Health Disadvantage: Can Education Disrupt It?

In low-income countries, intergenerational processes can culminate in the replication of extreme forms of health disadvantage between mothers and adult daughters, including experiencing a young child's death. The preventable nature of most child deaths raises questions of whether social resources can protect women from enduring this adversity like their mothers. This study examined whether education-widely touted as a vehicle for social mobility in resource-poor countries-disrupts the intergenerational cycle of maternal bereavement. We estimated multilevel discrete-time survival models of wome…

Posttraumatic Growth After Struggling With the Loss of a Parent in Young Adulthood.

This study aims to examine posttraumatic growth and its associations with parental bereavement among adolescents and young adults. Fifty-five young adults who had lost a parent to cancer at least 2 months earlier and were about to attend a support group at a palliative care service were recruited. Data was collected through questionnaires before support group participation, about 5-8 months after the loss and at a 6-month follow-up, about 14-18 months after the loss. The result shows that the young adults experienced posttraumatic growth, mostly in the domains Personal strength and Appreciatio…

Eight 'truths' about suicide.

This paper summarises themes that have emerged from 14 years of study of suicide and work with those bereaved. It is based on a talk given in many clinical settings over the past 10 years. I describe my own emotional journey following impactful deaths and summarise personal 'truths' about suicide that have emerged over time. Case studies used for illustration are composites taken from clinical practice; accounts of relatives and other survivors of suicide; and data taken from many sources including suicide audits in mental health organisations, the police and transport services, and from the e
