Association between Helicobacter bilis in bile and biliary tract malignancies: H. bilis in bile from Japanese and Thai patients with benign and malignant diseases in the biliary tract.

Japan and Thailand have high incidences of bile duct carcinoma and gallstones. The presence of Helicobacter bilis (H. bilis) detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 16S rRNA analysis in bile samples from Chileans with chronic cholecystitis was reported. The association between H. bilis in bile and biliary tract malignancies has not been investigated, and therefore the aim of this study is to determine whether malignant diseases of the biliary tract are associated with the presence of H. bilis in bile samples obtained from two high-risk populations. Bile samples from 45 Japanese and 40

Pancreas and biliary system: imaging of developmental anomalies and diseases unique to children.

The focus of this article is on the development of the pancreas and biliary system, with a review of the most common congenital anomalies affecting the pancreas and biliary tree, including pancreas divisum, annular pancreas, congenital shortening of the pancreas, and choledochal cysts. Additionally, biliary atresia and pancreatoblastoma--both diseases of the pancreas and biliary system that almost exclusively affect children--are considered, with a discussion regarding the clinical presentation and imaging appearances of these disorders.

Lectin histochemistry of the liver in biliary disease, following transplantation and in cholangiocarcinoma.

Evidence is accumulating that there are changes in the expression of antigens on biliary epithelium in early primary biliary cirrhosis and graft rejection. If any of the biliary diseases including rejection are associated with specific alterations in biliary glycoprotein structure, lectin histochemistry could be useful for detecting these abnormalities. Lectin histochemistry, using a panel of five lectins with differing carbohydrate specificities, was therefore performed on liver biopsies from patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, sclerosing cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma, liver transplant

Lack of value of serum gamma-glutamyl transferase in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disease.

Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT, EC. 2.3.2.2. was measured in 173 patients with diseases of the hepatobiliary system (including metastatic cancer) and in 90 patients who were subsequently shown to have primary diseases of other etiology. All patients had been selected because they had abnormal alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase or bilirubin on SMA 12/60 screening. Serum GGT was elevated in 97% of patients with primary hepatobiliary disease. The magnitude of the increase in GGT was variable in all groups and was unhelpful in differential diagnosis, even between medical and s

K-ras point mutations in cancerous and noncancerous biliary epithelium in patients with pancreaticobiliary maljunction.

BACKGROUND: Pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM), an anomalous union of the pancreatic duct with the common bile duct, has frequently been shown to be associated with biliary carcinoma. However, the mechanism of carcinogenesis is unknown. METHODS: Mutations of the K-ras oncogene were examined in cancerous and noncancerous biliary tract epithelium of 20 patients with PBM by an extraction of DNA from surgically resected histologic specimens. DNA was analyzed by a polymerase chain reaction single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) method and direct sequencing. RESULTS: An abnormally mo

A Comprehensive narrative review of transcriptomics and epigenomics of gallbladder cancer.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is one of the quiet prevalent and aggressive biliary tract malignant neoplasms distinguished by significant cellular heterogeneity, metastatic activity, and a poor prognosis, with varied frequency worldwide. Most cases are detected incidentally while routine screening imaging or pathological investigation of cholecystectomy tissues and usually present with advanced disease. The surgical resection is usually done in the initial clinical stage having limited spread. Despite the surgical therapy, the death rate is significant. Furthermore, the molecular mechanisms affecti

Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Gallbladder: A Rare Surgical Entity.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC), while infrequent, is the predominant malignancy of the biliary tract. The absence of clinical symptoms in conjunction with aggressive behavior contributes to delayed diagnosis and unfavorable prognosis. This condition typically remains asymptomatic in its initial stages, making detection challenging. Herein, we report a case of adenosquamous carcinoma of the gallbladder in a 74-year-old Caucasian woman who was admitted due to anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding, and abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen demonstrated a formation adjacent to the neck of

Bile Duct Targeting or Preservation: Contrasting Liver Histology in Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis and Disseminated Juvenile Xanthogranuloma.

Liver involvement by histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms signals high-risk disease, often necessitating closer monitoring and aggressive management. Severe cases may progress to liver failure, requiring transplantation. Liver involvement occurs in about one-third of patients with systemic juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) and 20% to 60% of pediatric patients with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), particularly in multiorgan disease. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors show promise in LCH treatment, but optimal timing for treatment cessation remains uncertain. We present 2 pediatric cases, 1 with LC

Outcomes of surgery for 2010 WHO classification-based intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct: Case-control study of a single Japanese institution's experience with special attention to mucin expression patterns.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed an integrated classification for intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB) in 2010. However, IPNB reportedly shows considerable geographic variation. This Japanese single-institution study examined outcomes of surgery for IPNB and the prognostic impact of immunohistochemical mucin expression patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with IPNB were identified from 413 patients who underwent curative-intent surgery for biliary tract (excluding gallbladder) neoplasms from 1992 to 2016 by retrospective macro- and microscopic

A technological convergence in hepatobiliary oncology: Evolving roles of smart surgical systems.

Cancer remains a major threat to human health, with the incidence of hepatobiliary tumors consistently high. Treatment methods for hepatobiliary tumors include surgical intervention, ablation, embolization, and pharmacological treatments, with surgery being a critical component of systemic treatment for patients with hepatobiliary tumors. Compared to other methods, surgery is the most effective way to remove tumors and improve survival rates, serving as the cornerstone of various treatment strategies. However, the large patient population sometimes burdens traditional surgical oncology. In rec

Helicobacter hepaticus and Helicobacter bilis in liver and biliary cancers from ATBC and PLCO.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter species (spp.) have been detected in human bile and hepatobiliary tissue Helicobacter spp. promote gallstone formation and hepatobiliary tumors in laboratory studies, though it remains unclear whether Helicobacter spp. contribute to these cancers in humans. We used a multiplex panel to assess whether seropositivity to Helicobacter (H.) hepaticus or H. bilis proteins was associated with the development of hepatobiliary cancers in the Finnish Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention (ATBC) Study, and US-based Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screen
