[Treatment of Bell's palsy by using portable biofeedback devices].

Portable, electromyographic feed-back devices were used to develop a scheme for staged and directed correction of motor function of facial muscles. The scheme was applied to the treatment of 32 patients aged 17 to 60 years with neuritis and neuropathy of the facial nerve. As a result of the treatment, the patients manifested the improvement of coordinative interrelations between the analogous groups of muscles of the diseased and normal side of the face (activation of weakened muscles with simultaneous abatement of the intensity of pathologic synergisms), evidencing the returning to normal of

Prediction of response to biofeedback-assisted relaxation in hypertensives: development of a Hypertensive Predictor Profile (HYPP).

A group of hypertensive patients who participated in a biofeedback-assisted relaxation program were divided into treatment successes and treatment failures based on the change in their blood pressure. Multiple regression analysis was used to characterize the successes and failures and to develop a hypertensive predictor profile. Hypertensives most likely to lower their blood pressure with biofeedback-assisted relaxation are those in whom there is evidence of autonomic overactivity, for example, cool hands, high heart rates, and evidence of a chronic response to stress, such as high anxiety sco

Effects of recurrent lateral ankle sprains on active and passive judgements of joint position.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of recurrent lateral ankle sprains on subjects' active and passive judgments of joint position. Fourteen subjects with recurrent unilateral ankle sprains contributed data to two groups: 1) In Group 1, the subjects' 14 sprained ankles were tested and 2) in Group 2, the same 14 subjects' contralateral nonsprained ankles were tested. An additional seven subjects with no history of injury to either ankle comprised Group 3 with 14 nonsprained control ankles. The experimenter tested all blindfolded subjects with active and passive attempts at repl

Self-control of psychophysiologic response to motion stress: using biofeedback to treat airsickness.

Investigators of the Neuropsychiatry Branch, Clinical Sciences Division, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), provided biofeedback-moderated behavioral treatment to 53 fliers grounded for chronic, severe motion sickness, and followed each flier for 2 years after treatment completion. Success was defined as returning to and maintaining satisfactory operational flying status. Of these, 42 fliers (79%) met this criterion; 3 (6%) were partially successful, and 8 (15%) were subsequently grounded for recurrent airsickness. Follow-on studies will investigate psychophysiological mech

Behavioral control of intractable idiopathic seizures: I. Self-regulation of end-tidal carbon dioxide.

Eleven women and seven men with moderate to severe chronic hyperventilation and idiopathic seizures refractory to therapeutic serum levels of anticonvulsant medication were given diaphragmatic respiration training with percent end-tidal CO2 biofeedback. The training had a rapid correcting effect on their respiration, making it comparable to that of 18 asymptomatic control subjects. Ten of the seizure-group subjects were in the study at least 7 months and following treatment, 8 showed EEG power spectrum "normalization", restoration of cardio-respiratory synchrony (RSA), and their seizure freque

Behavioral treatment of high blood pressure: III. Follow-up results and treatment recommendations.

This article is the third in a series of studies designed to evaluate systolic blood pressure biofeedback and relaxation in the treatment of elevated blood pressure. It reports on the posttreatment follow-up results. The main findings were that patients who received the behavioral treatments could achieve and sustain reductions in blood pressure for at least 18 months. Furthermore, a number of patients who were receiving diuretic therapy to control their pressures were able to maintain reduced pressure for at least 9 months after discontinuing medication. A model for a behavioral-stepped care

Biofeedback and relaxation in the treatment of migraine headaches: comparative effectiveness and physiological correlates.

Twenty-seven migraine headache patients were divided into three equal groups which received thermal biofeedback, frontalis EMG biofeedback, or relaxation training. Training was given under "massed" practice conditions (nine sessions per week) and consisted of 18 training sessions and six test-generalisation sessions. While improvements in headaches were observed in all groups, the best improvements took place in the thermal biofeedback group, which had almost complete elimination of migraine attacks by the end of training, and maintained that performance as long as six months after training. Self-hypnosis, biofeedback, and voluntary peripheral temperature control in children.

Forty-eight children, aged 5 to 15 years, were tested for their ability to raise and lower their index finger temperature with self-hypnosis and/or biofeedback. Group A (self-hypnosis only) and group B (self-hypnosis with biofeedback) were children who had previous successful experience with self-hypnosis (eg, for the treatment of enuresis, pain, asthma, or obesity). Group C (biofeedback only) were children with no experience with hypnosis. All three groups showed significant success with warming and cooling. The range of warming for the three groups was 0 to 3.7 F, and for cooling, 0 to 7.3 F

Effectiveness of relaxation techniques for stress management and quality of life improvement in cardiovascular disease and hypertensive patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and hypertension are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, significantly affecting quality of life (QoL). Stress, anxiety, and poor psychological well-being often exacerbate these conditions, creating a vicious cycle. Relaxation techniques, including progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and diaphragmatic breathing, assist in contracting and relaxing muscle groups to aid individuals in identifying and reducing physical tension and foster relaxation due to increased parasympathetic nerve activity, resulting in emotional tranq

Validation of Smartphone Based Heart Rate Tracking for Remote Treatment of Panic Attacks.

Panic attacks are an impairing mental health problem that affects 11% of adults every year [1]. Those who suffer from panic attacks often do not seek psychological treatment, citing the inability to receive care during their attacks as a contributing factor. A digital medicine solution which provides an accessible, real-time mobile health (mHealth) biofeedback intervention for panic attacks may address this problem. Critical to this approach are methods for capturing physiological arousal during an attack. Herein, we validate an algorithm for capturing physiological arousal using smartphone vi

Systematic review of psychological treatment in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating rheumatic disorder characterized mainly by the presence of continual and widespread musculoskeletal pain, in addition to other disturbing symptoms. There is inconsistent evidence about the effectiveness of the treatments developed so far, making FM a chronic disease that is difficult to treat. The aim of this literature review was to analyze the empirical studies about psychological treatment of FM that have been published over the last twenty years. We conducted a literature search of studies published between 1990 and 2012 using Medline and PsycINFO in the

Nonpharmacological interventions for acute pain management in patients with opioid abuse or opioid tolerance: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to identify and map the evidence on nonpharmacological interventions for acute pain management in patients with opioid tolerance or opioid abuse. INTRODUCTION: Opioid therapy is the mainstay of pain management for adults experiencing moderate-to-severe acute pain. However, considering the known risks of opioid use and the growing number of patients with opioid tolerance or opioid abuse, nonpharmacological pain management interventions are of increasing interest to health care providers. Nonpharmacological techniques have shown potential in r

Stimulation of PPC Affects the Mapping between Motion and Force Signals for Stiffness Perception But Not Motion Control.

UNLABELLED: How motion and sensory inputs are combined to assess an object's stiffness is still unknown. Here, we provide evidence for the existence of a stiffness estimator in the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC). We showed previously that delaying force feedback with respect to motion when interacting with an object caused participants to underestimate its stiffness. We found that applying theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the PPC, but not the dorsal premotor cortex, enhances this effect without affecting movement control. We explain this enhancement as an additio

Improving Nausea Through Breathing Interventions: A Trial of Written Instructions for Diaphragmatic Breathing Versus a Biofeedback Device.

BACKGROUND: Nausea is a distressing symptom affecting ∼7% of the population. Pharmacologic options are limited and often ineffective for chronic nausea. Nonpharmacologic strategies, such as breathing exercises, have shown promise in reducing stress and GI symptoms, but their role in chronic nausea has not been studied. This study addresses this knowledge gap by comparing written diaphragmatic breathing (DB) instructions with a biofeedback device (CalmiGo) for their effect on nausea severity. METHODS: In a prospective study, we investigated the effects of breathing exercises using either writt

Lower limb muscle activation patterns in response to calf muscle EMG biofeedback before and after an 8-week gait retraining intervention in older adults.

For some patients, knee osteoarthritis is associated with excessive tibiofemoral joint loading, which contributes to cartilage degeneration. Modifying muscle coordination during walking, particularly between the soleus and medial gastrocnemius, may help reduce joint loading. Strength training of the soleus could further support this process by increasing muscle force generation capacity, potentially making new activation patterns more efficient and easier to learn. This study examined the effects of an 8-week neuromuscular coordination gait retraining program using real-time electromyography (

Wearable technology to characterize and treat mild traumatic brain injury subtypes: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial on biofeedback-based precision rehabilitation (SuBTyPE).

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation of persistent imbalance in people with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is challenging, and responsiveness to rehabilitation is often suboptimal. One reason for suboptimal outcomes may be patient heterogeneity within rehabilitation referrals. Specifically, people with greater vestibular and/or ocular-motor (V/O) symptoms may respond better to vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) compared to those with greater mood or cognition symptoms. Poor performance of exercises may also explain suboptimal outcomes. This study aims to 1) assess if a wearable sensor-based mul
