A novel composite microbial agent controls kiwifruit bacterial canker and modulates bark bacterial communities.

Kiwifruit bacterial canker (KBC), caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), is an important disease limiting kiwifruit production worldwide. Management relies largely on copper-based products and antibiotics, whereas biological control options with consistent field efficacy remain limited. We evaluated the composite microbial agent "Fufangkuiyangjing" (FKYJ) against KBC when applied during two key management windows: post-harvest to pre-defoliation and pre-flowering to post-flowering. In vitro inhibition and detached-leaf inoculation assays showed that FKYJ exhibited strong antibact

Leishmaniasis control.

The article sets forth the basic principles for the control of the leishmaniases, which are for the most part diseases occurring in natural foci. The need for specially planned measures for leishmaniasis control is emphasized. Different measures are required in different regions according to the type of epidemic focus and the nature of the disease cycle. In view of the specificity of the biological interrelationships between leishmaniae and their invertebrate hosts, sandfly control is of paramount importance in the prophylaxis of the leishmaniases. In the USSR, it has been possible to clear comp

Integrative genomic and phenotypic analyses reveal broad-spectrum antifungal activity and biocontrol potential in Bacillus ayatagriensis.

The Caatinga biome represents an important reservoir of microbial biodiversity that remains largely unexplored for the development of agricultural bioinputs. In this study, genomic analyses and phenotypic assays were integrated to investigate the biocontrol potential of two Bacillus strains isolated from this environment. Phylogenomic analyses identified the isolates as Bacillus subtilis BSS.245 and Bacillus ayatagriensis BSS.246. The genomes comprised 4.10 and 4.01 Mb, with GC contents of 43.67% and 46.58%, encoding 4,077 and 3,852 genes, respectively. Genome mining revealed biosynthesis-rela

Biocontrol mechanisms of a karstic cave-derived Streptomyces sp. GCAL-9 bioactive extract against Colletotrichum musae: insights into ergosterol pathway involvement and metabolomic profiling.

Anthracnose is a fungal disease associated with Colletotrichum members responsible for one of the major diseases that critically deteriorate fruit quality. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the biocontrol mechanism of the Streptomyces sp. GCAL-9 bioactive extract (BE9) against Colletotrichum musae. We also determined alterations in cell morphology, changes in membrane stability, and the effects on the expression of ergosterol biosynthesis-related genes. Additionally, we analyzed genomic and phylogenomic information. The strain GCAL-9 was initially isolated from a cave and evaluated for its antifung

Role of 2-hexyl, 5-propyl resorcinol production by Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 in the multitrophic interactions in the avocado rhizosphere during the biocontrol process.

Different bacterial traits can contribute to the biocontrol of soilborne phytopathogenic fungus. Among others, (1) antagonism, (2) competition for nutrients and niches, (3) induction of systemic resistance of the plants and (4) predation and parasitism are the most studied. Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 is an antagonistic rhizobacterium that produces the antifungal metabolite 2-hexyl, 5-propyl resorcinol (HPR). This bacterium can biologically control the avocado white root rot caused by Rosellinia necatrix. Confocal laser scanning microscopy of the avocado rhizosphere revealed that this bio

Bacillus velezensis NC-B4 as a promising antifungal agent for biocontrol of Candida auris.

INTRODUCTION: Candida auris, known as the "super fungus", is commonly existed in hospital. The treatment of C. auris infection is difficult for its multi-drug resistance and difficult to accurately detect. The use of synthetic antibacterial agents has caused major problems such as drug-resistance and environment pollution and negatively affects non-target species. Microbial biocontrol agents (probiotics) are needed for fungal infection. Bacillus and related genera produce a variety of bioactive substances. As probiotics, it has been widely studied in the field of medicine and is a novel microb

Need for therapeutic escalation in patients with refractory ulcerative proctitis: Results from the PROCU study of the ENEIDA registry.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative proctitis (UP) can have a milder, less aggressive course than left-sided colitis or extensive colitis. Therefore, immunosuppressants tend to be used less in patients with this condition. Evidence, however, is scarce because these patients are excluded from randomised controlled clinical trials. Our aim was to describe the characteristics of patients with refractory UP and their disease-related complications, and to identify the need for immunosuppressive therapies. METHODS: We identified patients with UP from the prospective ENEIDA registry sponsored by the GETECCU. We

Root Rot Disease Biocontrol and Microbiome Community Modulation by Streptomyces Strains in Soybean.

Traditionally, phytopathogenic fungi control strategies rely primarily upon chemical fungicides, but fungicide resistance pathogen strains have appeared in the fields. Therefore, biocontrol approaches highlighted with sustainable agriculture aspects, especially the genus Streptomyces, are known to suppress numerous plant diseases. Streptomyces bacillaris S8 was isolated from turfgrass rhizosphere, and Streptomyces globisporus SP6C4 was obtained from strawberry pollen. Both strains showed excellent antifungal and antibacterial activities and suppressed various plant diseases in vitro. However,

Inhibition of plant pathogenic fungi by endophytic Trichoderma spp. through mycoparasitism and volatile organic compounds.

Antagonism of plant pathogenic fungi by endophytic fungi is a well-known phenomenon. In plate assays, the antagonism could be due to mycoparasitism, competition for space or antibiosis, involving a chemical diffusate, or a volatile organic compound (VOC). In this study, we demonstrate that besides mycoparasitism, VOCs play a major role in antagonism of pathogenic fungi by four endophytic fungi belonging to the genus Trichoderma. Using a double-plate assay, we show that all the four endophytic Trichoderma species significantly inhibited mycelial growth of three of the four pathogens, (Sclerotin

Individualising biologic therapy for paediatric severe asthma: A comparative review of all five approved agents, real-world evidence, and a biomarker-guided clinical decision algorithm.

Severe asthma affects 5-10% of children with asthma yet accounts for disproportionate morbidity and healthcare utilisation. The recent expansion of biologic therapies-targeting IgE, IL-5, IL-4/13, TSLP, and IL-5 receptor α-has transformed management but introduced complexity into clinical decision-making. This review provides a comprehensive, comparative analysis of currently approved biologic agents for paediatric severe asthma, with emphasis on efficacy, safety, biomarker-guided selection, and practical implementation. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE (2015-2026) for randomised controlled trials,

Releasing incompatible males drives strong suppression across populations of wild and Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti in Australia.

Releasing sterile or incompatible male insects is a proven method of population management in agricultural systems with the potential to revolutionize mosquito control. Through a collaborative venture with the "Debug" Verily Life Sciences team, we assessed the incompatible insect technique (IIT) with the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti in northern Australia in a replicated treatment control field trial. Backcrossing a US strain of Ae. aegypti carrying Wolbachia wAlbB from Aedes albopictus with a local strain, we generated a wAlbB2-F4 strain incompatible with both the wild-type (no Wolbachia) and

Diagnosis and management of non-infectious immune-mediated scleritis: current status and future prospects.

Scleritis is an inflammatory process of the sclera and adjacent tissues with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and co-morbidities. Careful clinical history taking, detailed ocular examination, and appropriate investigation for likelihood of an underlying systemic disease are essential for diagnosis. Treatment can be quite challenging in some cases. Conventional therapy with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents may not be sufficient to control ocular inflammation in refractory patients. In such cases new therapeutic agents, which have a more targeted and sustained effect on the

Use of biological sample banks in epidemiological studies.

Serum and urine banks have proved to be useful in the conduct of epidemiological studies. Samples collected as part of a large prospective study can be stored and retrieved later for laboratory analyses, selecting samples from groups of special interest and also from matched controls. The applications of the method are considered under three headings: firstly as a marker of a medical disorder, secondly as a measure of the extent of exposure to a harmful agent and thirdly as a direct measure of a suspected harmful or protective agent. Examples of each are given. Banks of biological samples othe
