Maternal weight gain in second and third trimesters and their relationship with birth weights in Morogoro Municipality, Tanzania.

A prospective study was carried out to determine the relationship between weight gain in the second and third trimesters with the corresponding birth weights in Morogoro, Tanzania. A total of 270 pregnant women who gave birth to singleton deliveries and their consecutive newborns were randomly selected from among women who were attending one antenatal clinic. Average weight gains in second and third trimesters were 2.45 +/- 0.68 and 2.14 +/- 0.43 kg, respectively (a total of 4.59 +/- 1.11 kg) for the two trimesters. Weight gains per week were 0.47 +/- 0.16 and 0.33 +/- 0.13 kg for the second a…

Body mass index--specific weight gains associated with optimal birth weights in twin pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate maternal weight gain guidelines, by maternal pregravid body mass index (BMI) status, associated with optimal fetal growth and birth weight in twins. STUDY DESIGN: This historical cohort study was based on 2,324 pregnancies with nonanomalous, liveborn twins (4,684 infants) from Ann Arbor, Charleston, Baltimore and Miami. Rates of maternal weight gain and fetal growth were modeled using multiple regression for 0-20 weeks, 20-28 weeks and 28-38 weeks (projected as necessary), controlling for potentially confounding factors. Optimal rates of fetal growth were defined as gr…

Postnatal weight gain in very low birth weight infants in Beijing and the risk of retinopathy of prematurity.

AIM: To analyze the low weight gain (WG) from birth to 4 and 6wk of life to predict the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm babies. METHODS: Three hundred and three newborns with VLBW were analyzed. Body weight measurements were recorded weekly. In all patients, the proportion of the WG was defined as the preterm weight measured at the 4(th) and 6(th) weeks of life minus the birth weight (BW) divided by the BW. Other risk factors for ROP were also analyzed. RESULTS: Mean gestational age and mean BW of the whole cohort were 29.56±1.44wk a…

From prematurity and low birth weight to CKD: opportunities for intervention.

Preterm birth (<37 completed gestational weeks), low birth weight (<2500g) and small for gestational age (SGA, birth weight <10th percentile for gestational age) are interrelated neonatal phenotypes that adversely affect lifelong kidney health. They have been grouped under the term small vulnerable newborn (SVN). Being born as SVN ranks fifth among risk factors for early mortality and imposes a lifelong susceptibility for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The combination of extreme prematurity and SGA triples CKD-risk in early adulthood. Globally, around 35 million SVN are born annually and will c…

Pregnancy and delivery outcomes in fetal macrosomia (birth weight exceeding 5,000 g).

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the association between fetal macrosomia (>5,000 g) and pregnancy and birth outcomes. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using data from the perinatal survey of Lower Saxony, Germany (2001-2009). RESULTS: Pregnancies complicated by advanced maternal age (>35 years), elevated BMI (>25.0), and excessive gestational weight gain were significantly more likely to result in macrosomic births. Additionally, pregnancies involving macrosomic fetuses were characterized by prolonged gestation and an increased likelihood of cesarean delivery. Neonates with mac

Epigenetic signature of very low birth weight in young adult life.

BACKGROUND: Globally, one in ten babies is born preterm (<37 weeks), and 1-2% preterm at very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g). As adults, they are at increased risk for a plethora of health conditions, e.g., cardiometabolic disease, which may partly be mediated by epigenetic regulation. We compared blood DNA methylation between young adults born at VLBW and controls. METHODS: 157 subjects born at VLBW and 161 controls born at term, from the Helsinki Study of Very Low Birth Weight Adults, were assessed for peripheral venous blood DNA methylation levels at mean age of 22 years. Significant CpG…

Biopsychosocial predictors of rapid weight gain from birth to 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains a public health crisis and identification of unique prenatal and early infancy predictors of obesity risk are critically needed. OBJECTIVES: We test a comprehensive biopsychosocial model of the predictors of rapid weight gain (RWG) in the first 6 months of life. METHODS: Two hundred and ninety nine pregnant women and their infants participated. Maternal prenatal psychobiological risk (PPBR) was assessed during the third trimester via maternal anthropometrics, serum biomarkers (insulin, leptin, adiponectin), and maternal report of pregnancy complications,

Neonatal haemostatic parameters in correlation to gestational age and birth weight.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of our study was to establish reference ranges for neonatal coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters and to investigate their relationship with gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW). METHODS: A single-centre prospective study was conducted in all healthy neonates born in our hospital during the study period, excluding those with maternal or neonatal disorders and diseases that affect haemostasis. The following parameters were measured: fibrinogen, prothrombin time (PT), international normalized ratio (INR), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) as well as fact…

Maternal risk factors and neonatal outcomes associated with low birth weight.

This study aims to evaluate the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) and related maternal risk factors (during pregnancy or childbirth) and neonatal outcomes. A retrospective cross-sectional study design was used to select 7,421 pregnant women who gave birth in our hospital from January 2018 to June 2021. The data were analyzed using STATA 14.1, and the dependent variable (LBW) and risk were analyzed by the chi-square test of independence. The association between factors is used to determine the factors related to LBW through bivariate and multivariate logistic regression. The incidence of LBW …

Management of Acute Kidney Injury in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common problem in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Neonates born at <1,000 g (extremely low birth weight, ELBW) are at an increased risk of secondary associated comorbidities such as intrauterine growth restriction, prematurity, volume restriction, ischaemic injury, among others. Studies estimate up to 50% ELBW infants experience at least one episode of AKI during their NICU stay. Although no curative treatment for AKI currently exists, recognition is vital to reduce potential ongoing injury and mitigate long-term consequences of AKI. However, the definit…

Delivery Mode and Neurological Complications in Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

OBJECTIVE: The risk of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and periventricular leukomalacia is associated with low birth weight and gestational age. Caesarean section (CS) may reduce the risk of IVH, although it has been a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the mode of delivery (MOD) on the development of IVH and cystic periventricular leukomalacia (cPVL). STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed an initial cohort of 11,023 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants born between January 2010 and December 2019. Infants with major malformations and gestational age <23 weeks and ≥…

Birth Weight Reference Percentiles by Gestational Age for Turkish Twin Neonates.

AIMS: In clinical practice, birth weight reference percentiles for singletons are used to evaluate twin births. The utilization of singleton reference percentiles for twins is not appropriate as they experience different growth trajectories. However, Turkey still lacks such references. Our aim was to create gestational age-specific birth weight references for female and male Turkish twins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a hospital-based, multi-centered, retrospective study. In total, 2544 live-born twins between 2010 and 2019 were included in the study. Gestational age, birth weight, mode of …

Survival outcomes of very low birth weight infants with trisomy 18.

Trisomy 18 (T18) is one of the most commonly diagnosed aneuploidies leading to poor survival outcome. However, little is known about the dual risk of T18 and very low birth weight (VLBW, weighing <1500 g at birth). We aimed to investigate the survival and clinical features of VLBW infants with T18. In this observational cohort study, infants with T18 admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit in Kyushu University Hospital from 2000 to 2019 were eligible. Among 30 infants with T18 who were enrolled as study participants, 11 (37%) were born with VLBW. VLBW infants had lower gestational age (34…

Increasing Early Skin-to-Skin in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND: Early skin-to-skin care (SSC) has been shown to improve outcomes after preterm birth, including improved clinical stability and establishment of breastfeeding. Recent evidence suggests the most unstable infants get the most benefit, yet these infants are not consistently offered opportunities for SSC because of safety concerns and discomfort of the care team. PURPOSE: To identify barriers and implement a multidimensional approach to increase SSC within the first 72 hours of life among infants born less than 28 weeks' gestation and less than 1,000 g in a Level IV university-based r
