Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LAI-ART) is an emerging HIV treatment whose social implications extend beyond its biomedical effects. To explore how LAI-ART is imagined in contexts where it is not yet available, we conducted 66 semi-structured interviews with gay and bisexual men living with HIV in Colombia. Guided by the concept of the social plasticity of pharmaceuticals - the capacity of medicines to acquire shifting social meanings beyond their pharmacological action - we explored how participants anticipated LAI-ART might reshape HIV-related stigma. First, LAI-ART was imagi

BACKGROUND: South Asian gay, bisexual, and queer men (SA GBQM) living in Canada report that racism and heterosexism negatively impact their sexual health. There is a paucity of research examining associations between these forms of stigma, migration status, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing for this population.
METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of Sex Now 2019 and 2021 - online, national, cross-sectional surveys of GBQM. We used modified Poisson regression models (adjusted for age, income, education, disability, and pre-exposure prophylaxis use for HIV) to examine the eff

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences and HIV represent interconnected public health issues. However, studies characterizing the prevalence and associations remain limited among sexual and gender minorities (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning individuals, collectively referred to as LGBTQ+), especially in China. This study aimed to examine adverse childhood experiences patterns, association with risk of living with HIV, and potential mediating factors among LGBTQ+ individuals in China.
METHODS: An online survey was provided to LGBTQ+ people and the eligibilit

BACKGROUND: Syphilis cases in the United States have surged over the past decade, and cases are highest among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP) for GBMSM recently diagnosed with bacterial sexually transmitted infections to mitigate this burden. Potential drawbacks include increased antimicrobial resistance and microbiome disruption. Here, we estimate doxy PEP coverage levels required to eliminate sustained community transmission among GBMSM while balancing the dra

Studies on Happiness in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations are limited and have, in a majority of cases, been studied in Western populations. Prior popular frameworks to explain well-being in SGD populations include minority stress and Bourdieu's forms of capital, though few have integrated these frameworks. We leverage structural equation models, integrating these constructs to examine the relative influence of forms of capital and stigma on happiness among a large sample of culturally and linguistically Chinese SGD populations. The pres

BACKGROUND: Research has established that caregiving can have both positive and deleterious effects on caregivers' quality of life; caregivers are defined as informal caregivers caring for sick, limited, or frail family members/friends. Yet, the quality of life of female-identified caregivers who are lesbian, gay, and/or bisexual (LGB) is a relatively understudied area. Further, there is extremely limited evidence concerning the psychosocial and health behavior correlates of quality of life among LGB caregivers. Our project addresses this gap.
METHODS: Data from the Women's Health Initiative

INTRODUCTION: Barriers to seeking infertility care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) individuals are well documented in the literature. However, little is known about military LGBTIQA+ service members seeking infertility care within the Military Health System. Approximately 6.1% of active duty U.S. service members across all branches identify as LGBTIQA+, which underscores the need for a deeper understanding of the needs of this community to support and retain service members. We therefore sought to describe the lived experiences of le

BackgroundThis study examines chemsex patterns among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and their link to depression using a longitudinal approach. Recognizing and addressing chemsex is crucial for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care providers, as it supports harm reduction and effective HIV prevention and treatment for GBMSM.MethodsFrom 2017 to 2021, GBMSM at two sexual health clinics completed follow-up questionnaires. We identified chemsex trajectories using group-based modeling and assessed their association with depressive symptoms over two years using multivar

During Taiwan's early 2023 mpox outbreak, limited vaccine availability required targeting mpox vaccine priority groups (MVPs) for effective control, including individuals with multiple sexual partners, sex workers, and those with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study examines whether Taiwan's prioritization efforts reached MVPs. In November-December 2023, we surveyed 1656 gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in Taiwan via social media. Of respondents, 43 % were unvaccinated, 13 % had received one dose, and 44 % completed double doses. Receiving two

BACKGROUND: The HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 096 study was designed to address the markedly higher rates of HIV incidence among Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the Southern United States (US). A cross-sectional assessment was conducted during the pilot phase of the study to determine its feasibility and collect key HIV-related metrics for the study population.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Four hundred and twenty-two Black MSM, ≥ 15 years old and living in the four pilot communities (Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Montgomery, AL; Greenville, SC), were enrolled via starfish sampling into th

CONTEXT: The number of men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking health care has increased in recent years, but the research comparing sexually transmitted infections (STI) prevalence and risk behaviors between homosexual and bisexual MSM is limited, particularly postpandemic.
AIMS: To compare the profile of STIs and risk behaviors between homosexual and bisexual MSM attending our STI clinic.
METHODOLOGY: In this comparative cross-sectional study, we analyzed the records of all male STI patients who reported at least one male partner who attended our STI clinic from January 2015 to December 20

OBJECTIVE: The Pulse Nightclub shooting is the deadliest act of violence against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community in U.S.
HISTORY: After the shooting, communities came together to process the violence and grieve the victims. Conceptualizing the Pulse Nightclub shooting as a cultural trauma, this article examines the impact of the shooting on gay, bisexual, and queer (GBQ+) Latinx men and how these men coped following the Pulse Nightclub shooting.
METHOD: Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with Latinx gay, bisexual, and queer men in the United Sta

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates Japanese gay and bisexual men's experiences of seeking help for emotional support from others regarding their sexual orientation concerns. It examines the relationship between their help-seeking and presence of gay and bisexual peers, duration between questioning their sexual orientation and accepting it, and experience of coming out to family members by multiple logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey using a self-reported paper questionnaire. There were 360 valid responses. Eighty-two respondents (22.8%) had experience

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) persist among cisgender sexually minoritized men in the United States, driven in part by sexual behavior stigma, which is a barrier to clinic-based HIV/STI testing. HIV/STI biospecimen self-collection (HSBS) is a novel testing approach that mitigates stigma by allowing for some testing-related procedures to be conducted by oneself in one's home or any private location rather than a facility that requires interpersonal interactions and exposure to other members of the public. HSBS has demonstrated acceptability, f

BACKGROUND: In the UK, the number of new HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) has decreased substantially. We aimed to understand the contribution of different interventions in reducing HIV incidence so far; to estimate future HIV incidence with continuation of current policies and with further scaling up of current interventions; and to estimate the maximum additional annual cost that should be spent towards these interventions for them to offer value for money.
METHODS: We calibrated a dynamic, individual-based, stochastic simulation model, the HIV Synthesi

This analysis of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey examined HIV syndemic factor associations (substance use, violence, mental health, and HIV risk behaviors) among adolescent gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men-a population with the highest prevalence of undiagnosed HIV infections. The representative sample ( n = 644) exhibited low condom use (52%) and HIV testing (21%). Adjusted multivariate logistic regression models showed that Blacks were less likely to report HIV testing (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.01-0.44], p < .01), whereas Hispanics we

HIV testing and diagnosis are the gateway into treatment and eventual viral suppression. With gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) persistently over-representing new HIV diagnoses in Canada, combined with the evolving nature of community social connection, an exploration of factors associated with recent HIV testing is warranted. As most studies of GBMSM rely on samples obtained from larger metropolitan regions, examining HIV testing from an under-researched region is necessary. With data collected from an online survey of LGBTQ+ persons 16 or older living, working, or re

Population-based measures and public health response to stem the spread of the coronavirus may have caused unintended isolation and increased the risk of psychiatric illnesses. The objective of this study is to assess psychological distress among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in China during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine whether these mental health outcomes differ by HIV status. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey on the impact of COVID-19 on users of Blued, the largest gay social networking app in July 2020. All active users on Blued were invited to

PURPOSE: This study describes changes in proportions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other gender/sexual minorities (LGBTQ+) among total deaths by suicide in American 11-29 year olds between 2014 and 2019.
METHODS: Data came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). All cases classified as deaths by suicide since 2014 that had valid data for sexual orientation or transgender identity were included from states that started participating in NVDRS before 2016. The latest year of data available was 2019. Valid n = 4,08

Optimization of mental health service use is critical to HIV care engagement among young Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (YB-GBMSM). Clinic-level interventions to integrate HIV and mental health services have been proposed; however, patient perspectives on such care models are often lacking. We conducted a mixed-methods study consisting of surveys (N = 100) and qualitative in-depth interviews (n = 15) with YB-GBMSM recruited from two Ryan White-funded HIV clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. Most participants (70%) agreed that integration of HIV and mental health services was
