OBJECTIVE: Infertility affects an estimated 17.5% of couples worldwide, according to the last report published in 2023 by WHO. A significant cause of this global fertility decline is due to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals exposure, which have the ability to interfere with the endocrine system. Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical product leads to health concerns for its endocrine-disrupting properties. Jujube honey contains antioxidants and active compounds, has various therapeutic properties. This study aims to determine testicular dysfunction and endocrine imbalance induced b

While gestational Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been associated with autism, limited work has focused on dietary sources. Here, we sought to develop a summary metric to capture dietary exposure specifically and test its associations with measured levels, as well as child traits related to autism. Participants (n = 116) were from the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI) Study, which recruited pregnant women who previously had a child diagnosed with autism. Maternal concentrations of BPA were quantified in urine, and dietary sources of BPA were ascertained via food frequency que

Bisphenol A (BPA), a persistent environmental contaminant with endocrine-disrupting properties, has been extensively linked to neurotoxicity, leading to cognitive decline, synaptic dysfunction, and neuronal degeneration. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and induces oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, and neuroinflammation, leading to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. This study investigates the neuroprotective effects of karanjin, a naturally occurring furanoflavonoid, against BPA-induced neurotoxicity using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism. Adult zeb

Researchers attribute increased incidence of colorectal cancer to environmental pollution with endocrine disruptors, including the estrogen-like substance bisphenol A (BPA). The proliferative activity, viability, and mRNA expression levels of the PIK3CA, NFkBp65, VEGFA, ESR1, HIF1a, PTEN, TP53, CD44, and CDH1 genes were evaluated in human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 cell culture incubated with different concentrations of BPA (5, 25, and 50 μM) for 24 and 96 h. Short-term (24 h) incubation with BPA did not lead to pronounced biological effects. During prolonged incubation (96 h), 5 μM BPA decrea

Due to the established endocrine-disrupting effects of Bisphenol A (BPA), alternative bisphenols entered the market. Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is now commonly used in the industrial manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. However, BPAF's effects on reproduction and development have not been thoroughly reviewed. We investigated the relationship between BPAF exposure and reproduction and early development. We performed a literature review of studies on BPAF and reproductive physiology. Using keywords, we searched PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library Database, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.…

An efficient technique for quantitative analysis of BPA, BPF, BPS, and 11 emerging bisphenol analogues in human urine has been developed, which combined solid phase extraction (SPE) with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Stable isotope internal standards were added to 1.0 mL of urine, which was hydrolyzed by β-glucuronidase overnight, and the target analytes were enriched and purified using an HLB 96-well plate, concentrated to dryness by nitrogen blowdown and reconstituted in 0.5 mL of 20 % aqueous methanol solution. Separation of the 14 anal

Maternal exposure to bisphenols, including bisphenol A (BPA), reportedly results in adverse pregnancy and offspring health outcomes. However, large birth cohort studies on the risk of BPA exposure during pregnancy remain limited. Here, we examined bisphenols' effects on adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes using data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study. We selected 4523 women with pregnancies resulting in singleton live births. First-trimester urine concentrations of bisphenols A, F, S, and AF were determined via high-performance liquid chromatog…

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol exposure during pregnancy has been linked to a range of adverse reproductive outcomes. However, the full extent of the effects of bisphenol analogs, particularly bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF), on fetal development, especially anogenital distance (AGD), a sensitive marker of reproductive development, remains unclear. We conducted this research to investigate association among maternal and neonatal urinary bisphenol analogs (BPA, BPS, BPF) and AGD.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 85 mother-newborn pairs in Bangkok, Thailand, fr

The formation of primordial follicles determines the pool size of follicles in the ovary, and is crucial for female reproductivity. Oocyte nest breakdown, and the formation of primordial follicles, largely depend upon the communication between oocytes and the surrounding pregranulosa cells. The neurogenic locus notch homolog protein (Notch) signaling pathway is the key player for this cell-to-cell communication, and is responsible for primordial folliculogenesis. However, different endocrine disruptors, including bisphenol A (BPA; a plasticizer and a constituent of reusable plastic containers)

Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) during gestation leads to fetal growth restriction (FGR), whereby the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we found that FGR patients showed higher levels of BPA in the urine, serum, and placenta; meanwhile, trophoblast ferroptosis was observed in FGR placentas, as indicated by accumulated intracellular iron, impaired antioxidant molecules, and increased lipid peroxidation products. To investigate the role of ferroptosis in placental and fetal growth, BPA stimulation was performed both in vivo and in vitro. BPA exposure during gestation was associated with

As awareness of BPA's health risks has increased, many countries and regions have implemented strict controls on its use. Consequently, bisphenol analogues like BPF and BPAF are being increasingly used as substitutes. However, these compounds are also becoming increasingly prevalent in the environment due to production, use and disposal processes. The oceans act as a repository for various pollutants, and recent studies have revealed the extensive presence of bisphenols (BPs, including BPA, BPF, BPAF, etc.) in the marine environment, posing numerous health hazards to marine wildlife. Neverthel…

Past studies have observed that BHPF induces multi-organ toxicity, however, whether it induces damage to male reproductive system and the specific mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, male mice were given 0, 2, 10 or 50 mg/kg/day of BHPF by gavage for 35 days to observe its effect on reproductive organ and sperm quality. The results indicated that BHPF decreased sperm count and sperm motility in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, our results demonstrated that BHPF triggered the proliferation inhibition and cell death of germ cells in vivo and in vitro. Also, BHPF reduced the express

Introduction Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a toxic chemical released from plastic, affects various body functions, including reproduction, metabolism, and development. The most common route of exposure to BPA is oral, and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is, therefore, the first body system to be exposed to BPA. BPA has been well-documented to impair gut contractility in rats, in vitro. It may therefore be hypothesized that BPA may adversely affect GI motility and hence slow down the movement of food, resulting in the increased transit of food bolus in the GI tract. There are no reports so far

Bisphenol F (BPF) is an environmental endocrine disruptor capable of crossing the placental barrier and affecting the growth and development of offspring. Despite its potential impact, systematic research about effects of BPF on the reproductive function of male offspring remains limited. In this study, pregnant female mice were exposed to BPF at doses of 40, 400, and 4000 μg/kg during gestation and lactation, respectively, to evaluate its impact on testicular damage, testosterone levels, and spermatogenesis of male offspring (F1 generation), and further explore the mechanisms using transcript

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have shown potential for the removal of organic contaminants; however, the preparation of catalysts with high degradation efficiencies and rapid reaction rates remains a challenge. In this study, we have successfully synthesized CoFe bimetallic modified corn cob-derived biochar (CoFe/BC) for the activation of PMS, achieving the rapid and efficient degradation of bisphenol F (BPF). The synthesized CoFe/BC catalyst demonstrated excellent catalytic performance, achieving over 99% removal within 3 min and exhibiting a removal rate of 90.0%

Bisphenol F (BPF) is a potential neurotoxicant used as a replacement for bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. We investigated the neurodevelopmental impacts of BPF exposure using Drosophila melanogaster as a model. Our transcriptomic analysis indicated that developmental exposure to BPF caused the downregulation of neurodevelopmentally relevant genes, including those associated with synapse formation and neuronal projection. To investigate the functional outcome of BPF exposure, we evaluated neurodevelopmental impacts across two genetic strains of Drosophila- w1118 (co
