Blindness from multiple cerebral gliomas mimicking metastatic brain disease.

Multiple brain lesions are usually due to metastatic spread. The authors describe an unusual case of a 56-year-old male presenting with visual loss secondary to multiple intracranial lesions, with infiltration of the optic chiasm and an incidental renal lesion. Open biopsy of the brain lesion confirmed glioblastoma multiforme.

INTRODUCTION: Prolactinomas in childhood and adolescence are rare. However, in male patients in particular they may become extremely large and invasive, resulting in visual impairment without necessarily producing endocrine symptoms. Blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome associated with cortical blindness.

An 83-year-old woman was admitted for investigation of sudden loss of vision. Extensive plum-purple papules and nodules involved her skin and lips but not mucosae. A cutaneous biopsy demonstrated irregular vascular cavernous channels in the dermis and subcutis; deeper vessels displayed smooth muscle. Blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome was diagnosed. This patient had no gastrointestinal symptoms, no family history of blue rubber bleb naevus syndrome, and only developed cutaneous signs after 60 years of age. PURPOSE: We conducted a 19-year review of patients with facial fractures who were treated in the Iranian Maxillofacial Unit at the Mobasher Emergency Hospital, Hamedan Province, Iran, to specifically consider those fractures that resulted in blindness or severe visual impairment. [Blast injury. Acute blindness caused by thoracoabdominal compression trauma].

Blindness can be the consequence of trauma, which until now had only been described in cases involving direct facial or cranial trauma. In our case a 53-year-old street worker became irreversibly blind after a thoracoabdominal compression trauma. The investigations performed were inconclusive regarding the cause of blindness. We postulate a massive increase in venous blood pressure with capillary stasis and consequent optic nerve damage. The Alliance for the Global Elimination of Blinding Trachoma was formed in the mid 1990s. Monocular blindness as a complication of trigeminal radiofrequency rhizotomy.

PURPOSE: To raise the awareness of the rare complication of monocular blindness resulting from radiofrequency rhizotomy for trigeminal neuralgia. METHODS: Case series from tertiary referral centers. Patients were referred after complaint of loss of vision. RESULTS: We report three patients who had trigeminal neuralgia and underwent treatment by radiofrequency rhizotomy. Each developed complete loss of vision in one eye immediately after the procedure. AIMS: To assess the relation between a country's economic developmental status and its prevalence of blindness. METHODS: Available epidemiological data on worldwide visual loss and its causes compiled by the World Health Organization were reviewed. Findings were compared with economic development data from the involved countries and regions. Analysis was completed in view of the socioeconomic status of each country and region. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cerebral metabolic and functional patterns during recovery from cortical blindness. DESIGN: Follow-up study with serial clinical, metabolic, and functional imaging and visual evoked potentials.
