On 8 September 2010, the Ontario Superior Court rejected a claim that Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is violating Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter) by refusing blood donations from men who have had sex with other men (MSM) since 1977. The case arose because CBS sued Kyle Freeman, a gay man, for lying about his sexuality on the screening questionnaire in order to give blood.

Blood group genotyping using DNA extracted from fetal tissue is useful to identify fetuses at risk for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to maternal red cell alloantibodies. An outpatient donor program using pets owned by employees or clients is a practical and cost-efficient means of obtaining blood for transfusion. Donors can have blood typed and be screened for certain diseases, and blood can be drawn at a convenient time. Components can be prepared and stored. Although such a program requires a commitment to assemble reliable volunteers, the results is a team effort that can be rewarding and assures an adequate blood supply.

Blood pressure is an inherently variable phenomenon. In addition to this the level rises in the clinical setting; a response which is extremely variable. Problems therefore arise in the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. Studies have shown that blood pressure can reliably be measured at home either with a stationary or ambulatory apparatus. The readings which are reproducible are generally lower than those obtained in the clinic. Ambulatory recordings are a more reliable guide to prognosis and to the response to hypotensive agents. Arterial blood gases are useful in establishing acid-base status, determining the degree of impairment of the lungs as a gas exchanger, diagnosing such important phenomena as pulmonary emboli and implementing or adjusting oxygen therapy. The balance among H+, HCO3- and CO2 is represented by the equation H+ + HCO3- in equilibrium CO2 + H2O. Primary alterations of either component of the left-hand side of the equation result in metabolic acid-base balance disturbances; primary alterations of CO2 result in respiratory acid-base balance disturbances.
