BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Febrile non-haemolytic transfusion reaction (FNHTR) is an acute transfusion complication resulting in fever, chills and/or rigours. Study's objective was to assess FNHTR occurrence and potential risk factors among inpatient U.S. elderly Medicare beneficiaries, ages 65 and older, during 2011-2012.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our retrospective claims-based study utilized large Medicare administrative databases. FNHTR was ascertained via ICD-9-CM diagnosis code, and transfusions were identified by recorded procedure and revenue centre codes. The study ascertained FNHTR rate

INTRODUCTION: Blood transfusion is an integral part of health-care system and there is no complete suitable substitute for human blood till date. Thus, every unit of blood and its products is precious and should be used judiciously. There is a steady increase in demand for blood and its components and thus to maintain balance between demand and supply, rational use of blood and its components is the need of the hour. This study was conducted to analyze different reasons for discarding blood and its components in a tertiary trauma center so that proper recommendations can be adopted to minimize

BACKGROUND: Revision hip arthroplasty poses several challenges, including the management of perioperative blood loss. Recent studies have validated the use of tranexamic acid in primary total hip arthroplasty, showing reduced blood loss and decreased number of allogenic blood transfusions. The effectiveness of tranexamic acid has not been well studied in the revision hip arthroplasty setting.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 1,072 patients who underwent revision hip arthroplasty at our institution from 2008 to 2016. A total of 634 patients met the inclusion criteria, and compar

BACKGROUND: Bacterial contamination of platelet (PLT) components is an important cause of transfusion reactions. Recent efforts have focused on heightened surveillance to detect contamination before transfusion to limit recipient morbidity and mortality. Although identifying the cause of contamination is most often viewed in the context of recipient safety, this case illustrates the importance of a thorough evaluation on donor safety.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old woman experienced a severe febrile reaction after a plateletpheresis transfusion. Blood cultures from the patient and from the platel

BACKGROUND: Despite data supporting the safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, concerns regarding the receipt of blood products from donors previously infected or vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 persist. We assessed whether transfusions of plasma or platelet products from donors with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination were associated with adverse outcomes in patients without COVID-19.
METHODS: We linked donor SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid antibody data and vaccination history to blood products transfused between June 1, 2020 and March 31, 2022. We used logistic regression, adjusting for d

BACKGROUND: The ideal perioperative fluid resuscitation for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAAs) is unknown. It has been shown in trauma studies that a higher ratio of plasma and platelets to packed red blood cells confers a mortality benefit. Controversy remains whether this is true also in the rAAA population. The objective of the present study was to investigate the benefit of a greater ratio of plasma/packed red blood cells in patients with rAAAs.
METHODS: A health sciences librarian searched four electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalT

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the safety of preoperative autologous blood donation (PAD) and its transfusion is important, especially for young pregnant donors in an era of extremely low incidence of viral transmission.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to hospitals, and safety information from donation to transfusion was collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: Among 2378 obstetrical donors who underwent PAD, 1664 received autologous blood only (autologous group), 146 received allogeneic blood in addition to autologous blood (allogeneic group), and 568 received no transfusion (no transfusion

BACKGROUND: Allergic reactions occur commonly in transfusion practice. However, severe anaphylactic reactions are rare; anti-IgA (IgA: Immunoglobulin A) in IgA-deficient patients is one of the well-illustrated and reported causes for such reactions. However, IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction through blood component transfusion may be caused in parasitic hyperimmunization for IgG and IgE antibodies.
CASE REPORT: We have evaluated here a severe anaphylactic transfusion reaction retrospectively in an 18year-old male, a known case of cerebral malaria, developed after platelet transfusions. T…

Current osteoarthritis (OA) research searches for treatments that modify the course of disease progression. Autologous Protein Solution (APS) is derived from whole blood and is a unique autologous therapy that contains high concentrations of white blood cells, platelets, and concentrated plasma, providing cytokines that can target the underlying mechanisms of disease progression. The APS Kit is currently under investigation for clinical use in the USA (NCT02262364). The aim of this study was to determine if APS has disease-modifying properties in the well-characterized rat meniscal tear-induce

OBJECTIVE/AIMS: To assess the effect of prophylactic administration of fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) in the form of reconstituted blood in children undergoing craniofacial reconstruction. The outcomes of interest included immediate postoperative coagulation laboratory test results, postoperative surgical drain output, and the number of unique blood donor exposures incurred.
BACKGROUND: We recently changed our intraoperative transfusion strategy in children undergoing craniofacial reconstruction surgery to one in which blood loss is replaced with donor-matched reconstituted blood rather than tradi

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the infectivity of Alphavirus Chikungunya and Mayaro in blood products in plaque forming units (UFP/ml).
BACKGROUND: Arboviruses are responsible for sporadic diseases or epidemics which cause serious public health issues. Due to the high number of asymptomatic infections and high viremia, blood donors may pass on these viruses by transfusion.
METHODS/MATERIALS: This study used blood bags that would be discarded after evaluation and certification of the absence of infections. The blood products obtained by centrifuging a unit of whole blood were called blood components. Al

The Singapore Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) collects, processes and distributes blood and blood components to all hospitals. It also provides clinical and diagnostic haematological services to the hospitals. Blood donation is based on an entirely voluntary system. Blood donor incentives include a scheme of medical benefits for regular blood donors. Major advances in the 1960s include the introduction of disposable plastic blood packs for blood collections which permitted blood components to be prepared in a closed system. The development of a mobile blood collection service has enabled many

BACKGROUND: Sepsis arising from the transfusion of bacterially contaminated platelet components continues to be an infrequent, yet serious transfusion complication. Skin organisms are implicated in a number of these septic episodes. A model system was used to investigate if a skin organism's bioburden in blood components could be reduced by diverting the first few mL of whole blood away from the primary container.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A sterile medication site was inserted into a bag containing sterile saline or whole blood; the site was deliberately contaminated with Staphylococcus aure

Blood components should be compatible both with the recipient and the donor in the ABO incompatible allogeneic stem cell transplantation setting. A patient with blood type A2 received peripheral blood stem cells from a blood type O donor. The patient was in critical condition due to treatment-related toxicity. He had acquired anti-A1 that was unfortunately overlooked. Following transfusion of A1 red blood cells in error, he developed a severe hemolytic transfusion reaction. Anti-A1 is rarely clinically significant. We discuss the role of passenger lymphocytes in development of the anti-A1, and

The risk of vCJD transmission via blood transfusion depends on potential levels of infectivity, recipients' exposure to infected donors and individual susceptibility. On infectivity, SEAC (the UK's main scientific advisory committee on TSEs), has published an updated position statement. Based on animal models, this suggests that infectivity is split roughly equally between leucocytes and plasma, with negligible levels directly associated with red cells or platelets. Risk assessments are now therefore based on the amounts of plasma and leucocytes within each component as transfused. Recipients'

BACKGROUND: Effective hemostatic management remained a critical challenge in neonatal and infant cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) had not been conducted to evaluate optimal strategy selection for this vulnerable population.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase from inception to December 3, 2025. We use bivariate analysis and NMA with random effects. We use the surface beneath the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) to display the order of interventions.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of blood products occurs frequently in ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery (rAAA). The aim of this study is to establish the impact of packed red blood cell (PRBC), fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and platelet (PLT) transfusion on the 30-day mortality and morbidity (thrombotic versus non thrombotic complications) of rAAAs.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 90 consecutive rAAAs from November 2007 to June 2015 was conducted. Multivariable regression models were produced to determine blood products associated with 30-day morbidity and mortality post-rAAA.
RESULTS: The

BACKGROUND: Haemorrhagic morbidity is more common in women with abnormal placentation, that is placenta praevia or morbidly adherent placenta. The incidence of abnormal placentation is increasing due to rising caesarean section rates. Concerns regarding blood safety, blood shortages and soaring costs of blood processing have generated growing enthusiasm for blood conservation strategies. The aim of our study was to look at intraoperative cell salvage (IOCS) use and allogeneic transfusion patterns in patients with abnormal placentation.
METHODS: Patients with abnormal placentation were identif
