BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion saves many people every year that would otherwise have died. The present study aimed to provide an update and insightful information regarding prevalence of the common Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (TTIs) and associated factors among blood donors in Tanzania.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving retrospectively collected data of blood donors from the Tanzania Northern Zone Blood Transfusion Center between 2017 and 2019. Descriptive statistics were performed to describe characteristics of the blood donors. Univariable and multivariable logistic…

BACKGROUND: Optimal strategies for regular blood transfusion therapy are not well defined in sickle cell disease (SCD). This analysis tested the hypothesis that in the first of year of regular transfusions, when chelation therapy use is minimal, automated exchange transfusion would be the superior method for attenuating the rise in ferritin levels compared to simple and manual exchange transfusions.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The Silent Cerebral Infarct Multi-Center Clinical Trial randomly allocated children with SCD and silent cerebral infarcts to receive standard care or regular transfusions…

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is an acute neurological disorder characterised by seizures, altered mental status and visual disturbances. Common triggers include hypertension, renal impairment and immunosuppressive therapy. Blood transfusion and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist therapy are less frequent causes. We describe a 44-year-old woman with severe iron deficiency anaemia due to menorrhagia who received five units of blood transfusion over 3 days. Her haemoglobin increased from 18 to 94 g/L, and she was started on goserelin therapy. Fifteen days later, s…

Viral hepatitis A (VHA) is primarily transmitted via the faecal-oral route. Transmission through blood transfusion products is rare. In 2025, during an ongoing VHA epidemic in the Czech Republic, cases of hepatitis A virus (HAV) transmission through transfusion blood products from an asymptomatic donor were detected. The donor was only found to be HAV positive after developing clinical symptoms. Infected blood transfusion products (leukocyte-depleted erythrocytes and thrombocytes) were administered to two recipients, who subsequently developed infection. One of them, a paediatric patient, pres…

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify risk factors for intraoperative blood transfusion during pediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) to stratify high-risk patients and optimize perioperative blood management.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 472 pediatric patients who underwent PCNL at the People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, between January 2013 and September 2024. Patients were divided into transfusion and non-transfusion groups based on need for intraoperative transfusion. A total of 34 variables were collected, including demographics, pre…

Background: Biological sex differences are well-recognized as non-negligible factors in implementing precision medicine practice. Sex chromosomes influence protein expression and signaling, and thus cellular pathways are often regulated differently. Additionally, the importance of sex as a biological variable has gained significant traction in biomedical research, including transfusion medicine. Regarding transfusion medicine, several studies reveal the role of gender in blood transfusion, blood donors' behavior towards donation, blood products' composition and storage, transfusion therapy, an…

The genus Aeromonas is a natural inhabitant of aquatic environments. These microorganisms are commonly regarded as pathogens of fish. Aeromonas' involvement in the eye is rare, with only a few reported cases of endogenous endophthalmitis. Here, we report a case of a woman in her early 20s presenting with sudden onset diminution of vision in her right eye, along with pain, redness and whitish opacity following a blood transfusion. Clinical examination suggested endogenous endophthalmitis. Despite negative blood, urine and stool cultures, evisceration and culture of intraocular contents revealed…

OBJECTIVE: Consensus guidelines are lacking for the administration of blood product transfusions in adult skull base neurosurgery. This stud … mL, respectively. Only one study proposed a hemoglobin threshold specific to skull base surgery for blood transfusion at 7-8 g/dL.
CONCLUSION: Based on our scoping review, a hemoglobin level of 7 g/dL (Level B, Class IIa) may represent a reasonable starting point to guide transfusions in skull base surgery, though prospective validation is warranted.

OBJECTIVE: Blood product transfusion is a common practice in infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) undoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH). The advantages and disadvantages of conservative or liberal transfusion practices in this fragile population are unknown. Study aims to characterize the transfusion practices in infants with HIE and investigate the association with outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a single level IV NICU, evaluating transfusion thresholds, as well as the association between hematological abnormalities or blood product transfusio

Ensuring the safety of blood and blood products is a vital aspect of healthcare. The potential for transmission of pathogens through blood and blood products makes transfusion safety a significant concern. Despite advancements in testing methodologies, donated blood products still pose a risk for infection transmission. Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a small, single-stranded, non-enveloped DNA virus transmissible parenterally by blood transfusion. B19V causes a wide range of clinical manifestations, which is generally harmless in healthy individuals. B19V infection may cause severe complicatio…
