The impact of body weight on the diagnosis of aortic dilation-misdiagnosis in overweight and underweight groups.

BACKGROUND: Body surface area (BSA)-indexed Z-scores are used to assess the ascending aorta (AAo) and diagnose aortic dilation (AoD) in children. BSA is directly related to body weight and corresponds to body mass index (BMI). We hypothesized extremes in BMI alter interpretation of aortic size in pediatric patients with AoD. METHODS: We reviewed all echocardiograms with a diagnosis of AoD performed at our institution from January 2013 through June 2013. Those with an age <2 or >20 years, history of aortic root surgery, or inadequate images were excluded. The aorta was measured by standard met…

Body weight as a prognostic factor for day hospital success in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

For female adolescents with anorexia nervosa, body weight at admission as a predictor of treatment outcome in the day hospital setting was examined. A retrospective review of patient charts was completed to determine success or failure in the day hospital program based on weight above or below 85% of ideal body weight. There was not a greater risk of failure in the day hospital program for patients with ideal body weight below 85% compared to those patients with an ideal body weight of ≥ to 85%. Body weight did not predict day hospital success in adolescents with anorexia nervosa in this study…

Influence of body mass index on the association of weight changes with mortality in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A high body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Short-term w … ght, 31% were overweight, and 16% were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2)). Weight loss or gain (<1% or >1% of body weight) was strongly associated with higher rates of mortality or survival, respectively. After stratification by BMI categories, this was true in nonobese categories and especially in underweight patients. In obese patients, however, the association betwe …

Interactions of amylinergic and melanocortinergic systems in the control of food intake and body weight in rodents.

AIMS: Amylinergic and melanocortinergic systems have each been implicated in energy balance regulation. We examined the interactive effects of both systems using gene knockout and pharmacological approaches. METHODS: Acute food consumption was measured in overnight fasted male wild-type (WT) and melanocortin-4 receptor (MC-4R) deficient rats and in male and female WT and amylin knockout mice (AmyKO). Changes in food intake, body weight and composition in male WT and MC-4R deficient rats and in male diet-induced obese (DIO) rats. Pharmacological treatments included either rat amylin, murine le…

Population pharmacokinetics of recombinant factor VIII: the relationships of pharmacokinetics to age and body weight.

Comparison of the pharmacokinetics (PK) of a coagulation factor between groups of patients can be biased by differences in study protocols, in particular between blood sampling schedules. This could affect clinical dose tailoring, especially in children. The aim of this study was to describe the relationships of the PK of factor VIII (FVIII) with age and body weight by a population PK model. The potential to reduce blood sampling was also explored. A model was built for FVIII PK from 236 infusions of recombinant FVIII in 152 patients (1-65 years of age) with severe hemophilia A. The PK of FVII…

A delay in pubertal onset affects the covariation of body weight, estradiol, and bone size.

The skeletal system functions as a locomotive organ and a mineral reservoir and combinations of genetic and environmental factors affect the … ts. The first model tested the hypothesis that the functional relationships between bone traits and body weight were altered by a delay in pubertal onset. GnRH-a injections during puberty altered the covariation between body weight and bone size. The second model was constructed to test the hypothesis that variability in stiffness was causally related to vari …

Morphometric parameters of the human pineal gland in relation to age, body weight and height.

The aim of the study was to compare the size, weight, volume and density of the pineal gland in several groups divided by age, body weight and height. 80 human pineal glands were included in the study. Obtained data were statistically analysed by means of Statistica by Statsoft to check existing differences. Obtained data show some significant differences between pineal gland morphometry in weight- and height-related groups. However, these differences do not influence pineal volume significantly. Differences between the pineal gland volume in the maximal and in the minimal weight groups may su…

Influence of fetal body weight on metabolic complications in adult life: review of the evidence.

Numerous mainly cross-sectional studies have unequivocally shown an inverse relationship between birth weight of infants born at term and the incidence of impaired glucose tolerance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, hypertension and coronary heart disease. These findings apply to both sexes and are not modified by confounding factors such as age or body mass index. Although the original studies in the UK involved a relatively small number of subjects whose records of birth weight were traced back more than 50 years earlier, similar findings were recorded from larger prospective st

Subchronic studies on modulation of feeding behavior and body weight by neurosteroids in female mice.

Neurosteroids have shown promising therapeutic potential in a wide variety of neuropsychiatric and cognitive disorders. However, little research has been done on their role for the treatment of eating disorders and regulation of energy balance in the body. In the present study, subchronic treatment with the neuroactive steroid progesterone (10 mg/kg s.c.) for 28 days produced significant increases in body weight and elicited marked hyperphagia as compared to a vehicle-treated control group at all time intervals as observed on days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. On the other hand, subchronic treatment wi…

Further evidence for a low body weight in male children and adolescents with Asperger's disorder.

The study explores the common clinical impression and previously reported finding by Hebebrand et al. (7) of reduced body weight in male children and adolescents with Asperger's disorder (AD). Body weight and height of 36 consecutively admitted male patients with AD were retrospectively assessed for the calculation of body mass indices (BMI, kg/m2). The BMIs were transformed to percentile ranks and plotted into BMI-centiles representative for the German population. In addition, comorbid psychopathology was assessed to explore a possible relationship between associated psychopathology and body …

Effects of maternal acetazolamide treatment on body weights and incisor development of the fetal rat.

The incisor development of fetal rats on gestation day 19 was well correlated with their fetal weights. The number of odontoblasts in the mandibular incisors, an index of incisor development, increased more than that of the maxillary incisors with increase in fetal body weights. Maternal acetazolamide treatments were observed to suppress the mean fetal weight and to retard incisor development. A smaller incisor size, a thinner predentin layer, and fewer odontoblasts were characteristic of the acetazolamide group. There was also a good correlation between the fetal weights and the number of odo…

Low body weight: a simple indicator of the risk of dehydration among children with diarrhoea.

The early identification of children at high risk of dehydration as a consequence of diarrhoea would be of great value for health care workers in developing countries. By comparing children aged less than two years with diarrhoea and moderate to severe dehydration with matched controls who had uncomplicated diarrhoea, a number of prognostic factors were assessed. Low body weight, regardless of age, was strongly associated with the risk of dehydration; using 7.0 kg as a cut-off, it had a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 68%. Low body weight was superior to more complex anthropometric ind…

Effect on food intake and body weight of lesions in and adjacent to the posterodorsal amygdala in rats.

Bilateral lesions centered in the posterodorsal amygdala of female rats resulted in hyperphagia and excessive weight gain. The brain damage extended posteriorly through the amygdalohippocampal area and into the ventral hippocampus and subiculum. Lesions centered in the ventral hippocampal formation had a less pronounced, although still significant, effect on body weight. Damage to large areas of the amygdala, including the anterior, basolateral, and corticomedial groups of nuclei, was without effect. A serial reconstruction of overlapping areas of destruction for both effective and ineffective…

Estrogens and antiestrogens: actions and interactions with fluphenazine on food intake and body weight in rats.

Treatment of ovariectomized rats for 3 days with 2 micrograms estradiol benzoate (E2B), 6 micrograms ethinyl estradiol, or 1-2 mg of either of the antiestrogens nafoxidine or tamoxifen led to similar decreases in food intake, body weight gain, adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase activity, and hepatic fatty acid synthetase activity, despite their different effects on uterine growth and induction of progestin receptors in pituitary and adipose tissue. Longer-term (2 wk) treatment with tamoxifen resulted in similar transient changes in food intake and body weight gain, as did treatment with E2B. Da…

Weight change in depression: influence of "disinhibition" is mediated by body mass and other variables.

The direction of weight change (gain or loss) in depression has recently been found to be a stable characteristic of patients across depressive episodes. A search for determinants of the direction of weight change revealed two candidates: the body mass index (BMI) (weight in kilograms/height in meters squared) and a psychological variable, "disinhibition" of dietary restraint. The present study, of 68 patients with a history of recurrent depression, found a significant correlation between BMI and weight change; in other words, heavier persons were more likely to gain weight if depressed. There

[Significance of blood pressure and body weight in the early diagnosis of gestosis. Preliminary report].

Mean weight gain is higher in gestosis than in normal pregnancy. On the other hand, many patients with gestosis had an insignificant increase in body weight. Therefore, the weight gain in pregnancy does not have a predictive value concerning the later risk of developing gestosis. The supine pressor test ("roll-over test") and the determination of mean arterial pressure during weeks 18 to 26 of gestation (MAP-II-value) are simple and appropriate methods for early diagnosis of gestosis. By using the supine pressor test or by determination of the MAP-II-value, 73% or over 90%, respectively, of al…
