Traumatic brain injury (TBI), whether from a single incident or repeated trauma, is a heterogeneous neurological condition known for its cognitive, motor, and behavioral effects. However, its potential to influence or even enhance artistic creativity remains a lesser-studied phenomenon. This review explores evidence suggesting that TBI can give rise to novel or intensified artistic abilities, drawing on case reports and neuroimaging studies. We examine brain regions commonly involved in creative processes - including the prefrontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital cortices, as well as subcor

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is used with increasing frequency to evaluate the neonatal brain because it can provide important diagnostic and prognostic information that is needed for optimal treatment and appropriate counseling. Special care must be taken in preparing encephalopathic neonates for an MR study, transporting them from the intensive care unit, monitoring their vital signs, and optimizing MR sequences and protocols. Moreover, to accurately interpret the findings, specific knowledge is needed about the normal MR imaging appearances of the physiologic processes of myelination, ce

Severe head injury or diffuse axonal injury is frequently associated with spastic hemiplegia/paraplegia. However, the causative lesion has not been well elucidated. Especially, the relationship between the gliding contusion and spastic hemiplegia has not been inferred yet. We have analyzed 6 brain concussion cases and 19 cases of diffuse axonal injury. None of the concussion cases experienced hemiplegia in their courses. Among the 19 cases, 10 were left with persistent and disabling hemiplegia/quadriplegia, whereas 5 showed persistent but mild hemiplegia. Among the 10 cases, one was incapacita

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury results in diffuse axonal injury and the ensuing maladaptive alterations in network function are associated with incomplete recovery and persistent disability. Despite the importance of axonal injury as an endophenotype in TBI, there is no biomarker that can measure the aggregate and region-specific burden of axonal injury. Normative modeling is an emerging quantitative case-control technique that can capture region-specific and aggregate deviations in brain networks at the individual patient level. Our objective was to apply normative modeling in TBI to study

Abusive head trauma (AHT) is the most common cause of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in infants and the leading cause of child abuse-related deaths. For reasons that remain unclear, mortality rates after moderate AHT rival those of severe nonintentional TBI. The vulnerability of the developing brain to injury may be partially responsible for the poor outcomes observed after AHT. AHT is mechanistically more complex than nonintentional TBI. The acute-on-chronic nature of the trauma along with synergistic injury mechanisms that include rapid rotation of the brain, diffuse axonal injury, blun

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation betwe en necrosis and apoptosis in the hippocampus of exogenous bFGF on this process. METHODS: With Marmarou's method we produced a severe diffuse brain injury and studied the changes in the hippocampus by adapting a modified T dT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) method. At the same time we observed the effect of exogenous bFGF on neuronal necrosis and apoptosis. RESULTS: We found that together with cell necrosis there was an increase in the number of apoptotic neurons in the hippocampus CA2-3 sectors a s early as 4 h after injury, with numb

Cognitive dysfunction and brain white matter (WM) injury have been found in adults exposed to hypoxia. However, the mechanisms underlying these impairments remain unclear, and moreover, it is also unclear whether these impairments are reversible after reoxygenation. In this study, adult male mice were exposed to hypoxia for 15 days at a simulated altitude of 4300 m and then reoxygenated for 2 months. Control mice were raised under normoxic conditions. Mice showed a significant decrease in arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and an increase in heart rate and breath rate after hypoxic exposure, an

OBJECTIVES: A growing body of evidence suggests that, independent of localized brain lesions, mood disorders can be associated with dysfunction of brain networks involved in the modulation of emotional and cognitive behavior. We used diffusion tensor (DT) tractography to quantify the presence and extent of structural injury to the connections between the amygdala and other brain regions, which included the subgenual, the supragenual and posterior cingulate, the parahippocampal, the orbitofrontal and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, as well as the insula.

Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is an injury-induced cytokine that peaks 48 hours after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Juvenile LIF haplodeficient mice exhibit desynchronized glial responses, increased neurodegeneration, decreased axonal conductivity and behavioral deficits after a concussive head injury. Given the necessity of LIF during the acute recovery phase after injury, we hypothesized that intranasal LIF (IN-LIF) treatment would prevent neurodegeneration when administered during the chronic recovery period from a mild TBI (mTBI). Young adult male CD1 mice were subjected to a midline,

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) with varying inter-injury intervals by measuring diffusion tensor metrics, including mean diffusivity (MD), fractional anisotropy (FA), and diffusion magnitude (L) and pure anisotropy (q).
METHODS: Eighteen rats were randomly divided into three groups: short-interval rmTBI (n = 6), long-interval rmTBI (n = 6), and sham controls (n = 6). MD, FA, L, and q values were analyzed from longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging at days 50 and 90 after rmTBI. Immunohistochemical staining aga

In the development of secondary changes of brain damage caused by injury, tumour and hypoxia of different origin with unconsciousness also the activity of the metalloproteinase matrix (MMP) may participate. Their activation occurs first in the vascular wall which they damage and it may be assumed that MMP potentiate thus secondary changes in the sense of interfering with the haematoencephalic barrier with development of vasogenic cerebral oedema. In the cells of the vascular wall and in glial elements already after two days MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity was proved. While in focal injuries the findi

Massive hematoma of the corpus callosum caused by blunt head trauma is an extremely rare lesion. Most frequent traumatic lesions involve the corpus callosum are diffuse axonal injuries. They might be associated with small hemorrhagic foci in the hemispheric and brain stem white matter, intraventricular hemorrhages, subarachnoid hemorrhages, traumatic lesions of the septum pellucidum and fornix. Many cases of corpus callosum injury present with permanent disconnection syndrome. We present a case of a 32-year-old female suffered blunt head trauma resulted in massive corpus callosum hematoma whic

This review surveys concussion management, focusing on the use of neuroimaging techniques in return to play (RTP) decisions. Clinical assessments traditionally were the foundation of concussion diagnoses. However, their subjective nature prompted an exploration of neuroimaging modalities to enhance diagnosis and management. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy provides information about metabolic changes and alterations in the absence of structural abnormalities. Diffusion tensor imaging uncovers microstructural changes in white matter. Functional magnetic resonance imaging assesses neuronal activi

INTRODUCTION: The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsored the Blast Load Assessment Sense and Test (BLAST) program to provide an approach to operationally relevant monitoring and analysis of blast exposure for optimization of service member performance and health. Of critical importance in this effort was the development of a standardized methodology for preclinical large animal studies that can reliably produce outcome measures that cannot be measured in human studies to support science-based guidelines. The primary advantage of this approach is that, because animal studies report physiologi

OBJECTIVES: Using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), we demonstrated the spinothalamic tract (STT) injury in patients with central pain following whiplash injury. Our primary hypothesis is that fractional anisotropy (FA) and tract volume (TV) of the STT in injured people differ from non-injured people. Our secondary hypothesis is that the direction of the collision results in a different type of injury.
METHODS: Nineteen central pain patients following whiplash injury and 19 normal control subjects were recruited. The STT was reconstructed by the DTT, the FA and TV of the STT were measured.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is an important public health issue. White-matter alterations after SRC are widely studied by neuroimaging approaches, such as diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although the exact anatomical location of the alterations may differ, significant white-matter alterations are commonly observed in long fiber tracts, but are never proven. In the present study, we performed streamline tractography to characterize the association between tract length and white-matter microstructural alterations after SRC. Sixty-eight collegiate athletes diagnosed with acute conc

Soccer is the only major sport with voluntary unprotected head-to-ball contact. It is crucial to determine if head impact through long-term soccer training is manifested in brain structure and connectivity, and whether such alterations are due to sustained training per se. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we documented a comprehensive view of soccer players' brains in a sample of twenty-five right-handed male elite soccer players aged from 18 to 22 years and twenty-five non-athletic controls aged 19-24 years. Importantly, none had recalled a history of concussion. We performed a whole-brain tra

Shaken baby syndrome is the most common cause of death or serious neurological injury resulting from child abuse. It is specific to infancy, when children have unique anatomic features. Subdural and retinal haemorrhages are markers of shaking injury. An American radiologist, John Caffey, coined the name whiplash shaken infant syndrome in 1974. It was, however, a British neurosurgeon, Guthkelch who first described shaking as the cause of subdural haemorrhage in infants. Impact was later thought to play a major part in the causation of brain damage. Recently improved neuropathology and imaging t

HIV-infected people frequently exhibit brain dysfunction characterized by preferential damage to the cerebral white matter. Despite suppressed viral load and reconstituted immune function afforded by combination antiretroviral therapy (CART), brain dysfunction continues to be observed even in medically stable individuals. To provide insight into the etiology of HIV-associated brain dysfunction in the CART era, we examined the effects of HIV disease markers, antiretroviral treatment, hepatitis C (HCV) coinfection, and age on DTI measures of white matter integrity in a cohort of 85 individuals a

Global cerebral edema (GCE) is a frequent and devastating manifestation of early brain injury after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), yet its exact inciting biology and sequence of events remain incompletely explained. In this viewpoint, we propose neurogenic cerebral edema (NCE) as a mechanistic hypothesis for vasogenic edema after aSAH, in which autonomic disequilibrium may amplify blood-brain barrier permeability within otherwise mixed cellular, ionic, and vasogenic edema. We integrate evidence that aSAH perturbs the central autonomic network, producing a sympathetic catecholamine
