Effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on breast tissue composition: a longitudinal mammographic study with automated volumetric measurement.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) on breast tissue composition with mammographic automated volumetric measurement. METHODS: This retrospective study included 168 breast cancer patients who were treated with NAC and underwent serial mammography (pre-treatment, mid-treatment, and post-treatment) between January 2015 and October 2018. Automated volumetric measurements of the contralateral breast volume (BV), fibroglandular volume (FGV), and breast density (BD) were performed using Volpara software. BD grades were divided into 4 groups by Volpara density grad…

The evaluation of breast findings detected through different visualisation techniques in acromegaly patients — a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: It is known that the increased growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have mitogenic and antiapoptotic properties in breast cells in acromegaly. Our study aims to evaluate breast findings in patients with acromegaly by comparing them to the control group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients followed with acromegaly diagnosis and 180 healthy controls were included in our study. Demographic data, laboratory results, Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) scores, and breast density evaluated via mammography, malign and benign breast lesions…

Reproductive and menstrual factors and mammographic density in African American, Caribbean, and white women.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations between reproductive and menstrual risk factors for breast cancer and mammographic density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer, in a predominantly ethnic minority and immigrant sample. METHODS: We interviewed women (42% African American, 22% African Caribbean, 22% White, 9% Hispanic Caribbean, 5% other) without a history of breast cancer during their mammography appointment (n = 191, mean age = 50). We used a computer-assisted method to measure the area and percentage of dense breast tissue from cranio-caudal mammograms. We used multivariable li

To what extent are objectively measured mammographic imaging techniques associated with compression outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the association between objectively measurable imaging techniques and the resulting compression thickness and dose. METHODS: The study included 80,495 routine screens from the South-West London Breast Screening Service between March 2013 and July 2017. Average compression force, paddle tilt and dose were calculated. The Volpara® DensityTM algorithm was used to estimate pressure, breast volume and density.Linear regression models, using generalized estimating equations (GEEs) to account for clustering by practitioner, assessed the strength of the associations between the

Lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast: clinical, pathologic, and mammographic features.

Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) was diagnosed in 165 surgical specimens (119 patients) at our institution between 1974 and 1987. LCIS was seen more often in younger women (mean age, 49 years) than other breast carcinomas were (mean age, 58 years). Sampling of a single breast revealed multifocal disease in 70% (96/138). When both breasts were sampled, bilateral foci were found in 50% (41/82). Of 165 breasts with foci of LCIS, 37% (61/165) had simultaneously occurring invasive cancers in the same breast. Direct mammographic-pathologic correlation of foci of LCIS was possible in 73 breasts (67 p

Menstrual and reproductive factors in relation to mammographic density: the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN).

Menstrual and reproductive factors may increase breast cancer risk through a pathway that includes increased mammographic density. We assessed whether known or suspected menstrual and reproductive breast cancer risk factors were cross-sectionally associated with mammographic density, by measuring area of radiographic density and total breast area on mammograms from 801 participants in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a multi-ethnic cohort of pre- and early perimenopausal women. From multivariable linear regression, the following menstrual or reproductive factors were indep

Combining Molecular and Radiomic Features for Risk Assessment in Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer risk is highly variable within the population and current research is leading the shift toward personalized medicine. By accurately assessing an individual woman's risk, we can reduce the risk of over/undertreatment by preventing unnecessary procedures or by elevating screening procedures. Breast density measured from conventional mammography has been established as one of the most dominant risk factors for breast cancer; however, it is currently limited by its ability to characterize more complex breast parenchymal patterns that have been shown to provide additional information …

Association and Prediction Utilizing Craniocaudal and Mediolateral Oblique View Digital Mammography and Long-Term Breast Cancer Risk.

UNLABELLED: Mammographic percentage of volumetric density is an important risk factor for breast cancer. Epidemiology studies historically used film images often limited to craniocaudal (CC) views to estimate area-based breast density. More recent studies using digital mammography images typically use the averaged density between craniocaudal (CC) and mediolateral oblique (MLO) view mammography for 5- and 10-year risk prediction. The performance in using either and both mammogram views has not been well-investigated. We use 3,804 full-field digital mammograms from the Joanne Knight Breast Heal…

Prevalence of mammographically dense breasts in the United States.

BACKGROUND: National legislation is under consideration that would require women with mammographically dense breasts to be informed of their breast density and encouraged to discuss supplemental breast cancer screening with their health care providers. The number of US women potentially affected by this legislation is unknown. METHODS: We determined the mammographic breast density distribution by age and body mass index (BMI) using data from 1518 599 mammograms conducted from 2007 through 2010 at mammography facilities in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC). We applied these brea…

Black-White Racial Differences in Background Parenchymal Enhancement at Breast MRI.

Background Women with high background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) at contrast-enhanced MRI have up to a fourfold increased risk of breast cancer, even after adjusting for breast density. However, no studies have examined BPE specifically among Black women, despite their higher breast cancer-specific mortality and typically lower breast density. Purpose To examine Black-White racial differences in contrast-enhanced MRI-derived BPE. Materials and Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study examined the data of Black and White women without a history of breast cancer who underwent both mam…

Implementing the National Dense Breast Reporting Standard, Expanding Supplemental Screening Using Current Guidelines, and the Proposed Find It Early Act.

Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia (DC) have dense breast notification laws that mandate varying levels of patient notification about breast density after a mammogram, and these cover over 90% of American women. On March 10, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule amending regulations under the Mammography Quality Standards Act for a national dense breast reporting standard for both patient results letters and mammogram reports. Effective September 10, 2024, letters will be required to tell a woman her breasts are "dense" or "not dense," that dense tissue makes…

Height and weight, mammographic features of breast tissue, and breast cancer risk.

A case-control study was conducted to evaluate the association of body size with morphologic features of breast tissue visible on mammograms, and to analyze the interrelations of these factors with breast cancer risk. The cases were 362 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer identified in 1978-1979 in three large hospital-based xeromammography units in Boston, Massachusetts, and one unit in Livingston, New Jersey. The controls were 686 women referred to these units in the same period for a "routine" mammogram. The parenchymal pattern (N1, P1, P2, DY) and the per cent of the breast showing no
